I finished up an epic run of Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar's best game. I had an amazing time with it. I also started High on Life which is hilarious, but extremely crass. Funny how the kids always walk into the living room when I start the game so I have to mute the volume and miss some of the fun dialogue. I don't recommend playing that way. Nyaa If you have Game Pass then this is definitely worth a download, a cross between Borderlands, Metroid Prime with the dialogue of Bullet Storm.

is that the game with a talking alien weapon?

Godamn I was addicted to Door Kickers Action Squad last night.

Might buy the OG top down one to try someday.

Action Squad is so addictive. Each stage is a multiroom building you have to clear out and rescue hostages. You can die in seconds if you make the wrong move. I've never been so happy to die before, grinning ear to ear.

Because at that moment you're already plotting how you're going to do things differently next time.

I tried the other characters and worked out the gear system which is pretty easy. You earn stars and use them to buy equipment to have at the start of each stage. Things like explosives or smoke grenades.

Somehow they've made a game with the immediacy of an arcade game, the challenge of a Rogue like, and the planning of a strategy game.

Although it's not like a traditional strategy game. You have to use visual cues to plot your approach. For instance, do you do a frontal assault? Or question does the door open immediately or should I knock to attract them to the door then blow it up? Or kick it into them if they're close enough to daze them.

Or should you go outside the building and climb up? Should I shoot through the window? Or crash down through the skylight?

Can you take out the bad guys without having to reload as that usually means death. Will I hit the hostages by mistake?

Can I hide behind that barrel? The bad guys follow you through doors up and down levels so you can lure them.

And for each hostage you rescue there is this special bar that fills. When it's at max you can trigger a special ability like calling in snipers to take out 3 onscreen enemies.

But you can also select other perks like body armour or a medkit. This means you can choose which hostages to rescue, so you can recover your special bar to the level you need, allowing you to unleash an ultimate attack again.

Doorkickers Action Squad doesn't teach you anything, but you learn through gameplay and experimentation.

It's awesome. I learned you can drop on top of enemies to stun them.

You can climb up a ladder and throw a flashbang into the room above, still on the ladder.

You can kick explosive barrels towards enemies to blow them up.

You can set fires to burn stuff and explode things to kill baddies.

If you control your trigger finger you can manage your recoil and be more accurate.

Fat guys with shotguns can't hit you from a certain distance.

You can plant a charge on a closed door, knock on the door to lure enemies towards you. Then boom.

If you go on top of rooms in shadows, looking or walking over the skylight will reveal what's inside.

So damned good, and it all feels completely intuitive.

I started Bayobetta 3 a couple of days ago. Can't play much during our holiday (who am I kidding, I never get much time to play anything) but I'm very happy that we get a big hammer to play with in this game. We need more big hammers in gaming.

Violent Night could be most important hammer movie since Thor.

That said, the first hour of the movie is kind of plodding. But if you can make it through that, you get something pretty similar to Die Hard if Santa was in the role of John McClane.

They straight up copy Die Hard 2 with the security force and snowmobile chase.

Since I'm on a 2d arcade kick I bought the Contra collection on sale.

A touch disappointed and it kinda highlights how much better modern 2D games are like Enter the Gungeon, Door Kickers and Huntdown.

The presentation is all over the place because of the various aspect ratios and screen sizes of the past.

The controls aren't as tight, but I've ordered a Hori dpad joycon.

Most of the games on the collection are different versions of the same freaking game. In reality you've got about 3 games with different versions.

Do you think the Hori controller would be better than the Pro controller?

It's better for portable play, I'm sure.

I really enjoyed it, yes the start is a slog but it gets so good. Amazing how they pulled off a kids Christmas movie in the middle of all that.

This sounds really cool, seems like a more in depth hotline Miami.

My sonic frontiers review is up, better than the worst sonic games, not as good as the better ones. People love it though, so I'm actually harsher than most.

So the reviews page doesn't seem to update, when I click on the tab I still see tunic as the last review there. But under latest review on the home page you can see every new review I put up. What's up with that?

The Hori Dpad Joycon arrived. Tested it a bit.

Because its got no battery, it's not wireless and no motion controls it feels exceedingly light.

Light controllers feel cheap. I expected that. But what's throwing me off is that attached to the switch, it feels a touch unbalanced as the right joycon is the same weight as its always been.

The dpad, felt incredibly responsive on Contra 3 SNES. I was actually surprised as it's been maybe 5 years since I used a dpad.

But on a more modern 2d game like  Huntdown I felt no difference.

There's a lot of travel on the dpad, compared to the switch left joycon buttons.

I think I've got to try Street Fighter 2 on it as I found it near impossible to do most of the special moves using the standard switch left joycon.

Its got a Co op mode too. Would be supremely awesome to time a raid into a room. One person lugs a smoke grenade through the skylight, the other breaches the door simultaneously.

They started introducing some powerful enemies which is cool and other elements such as moving through a basement that's flooding.

Tons of levels too, must be well over 100.

Under $4 on sale.

So I was playing the Contra Collection last night.

It's got the arcade Contra, the arcade sequel Super Contra.

Contra 3 (SNES)
Contra Hard Corps (genesis)

The other games are worse home console ports or the character swaps because of censorship back then. Using robots instead of humans.

The vertical orientation for Contra 1 and 2 arcade is excellent. One great thing about the OLED is that the stand is so wide and stable you can position switch vertically on a flat surface. I used a lap tray.

Without vertical orientation the display size is so small it's virtually unplayable.

Contra 1 is still pretty good. Super C is for some reason slow as shit, but still okay.

Contra 3 and Hard Corps are the best.

One weird thing is there are limited continues on the arcade contra. Even if you feed in 30 Bucks in credits, once you use all your lives its back to the beginning.
