So yeah, I just watched the last Nintendo Direct now.  Big Woop for Mario Kart.  Grinning  Game looks amazing.  The wife and I recently started playing MK Wii again, and I can't wait for 8 to arrive.  Of course, she said 8 looked just the same as the Wii version after I had shown her a trailer.  indecision  If we had been on a forum, I would have produced a mammoth thread to prove her wrong and called her a flamebaiter, but since we were sitting right next to eachother, I just rolled my eyes.

So Stephen Elop has been put in charge of the Microsoft software and games division.

http://www.theverge.com/2014/2/24/5444160/microsoft-management-shift-elop-larson-green-devices-services

Stephen Elop may not be Microsoft's new CEO, but the former head of Nokia is not going unrewarded for bringing the phone manufacturer into the Microsoft fold. According to an internal memo, Elop will replace Julie Larson-Green as the head of Microsoft's Devices and Studios business, putting him in charge of Xbox, Microsoft Surface, and Microsoft's game development efforts, in addition to the new cellular handset business. The memo reportedly comes from Julie Larson-Green herself as she takes on a new role: she's becoming the Chief Experience Officer for the company's Applications and Services group, managing the look and feel of products like Bing, Office, and Skype.

Who is he, the former CEO of Nokia who tanked the company. From Wikipedia:

During the 3 years Elop was Nokia CEO, Nokia revenues fell 40%, Nokia profits fell 95%, Nokia market share collapsed in smartphones from 34% to 3.4%, Nokia's credit rating went from A to junk, Nokia's share price dropped 60% in value and Nokia's market capitalization lost 13 Billion dollars in value. The Financial Times calculated that Nokia shareholders ended up paying Elop a bonus of 1 million Euros for every 1.5 billion in market capital that Elop was able to destroy while Nokia CEO.[5]

He has stated before that he would sell off the Xbox division

http://www.theverge.com/2013/11/8/5080192/microsoft-ceo-candidate-stephen-elop-bing-xbox-rumors

This is bad news. If MS doesn't succeed this gen is a total failure. We cannot have a one system generation.

I'm scared. Sad

Nokia was well on the way to their current situation when Elop took over, he worked at MS before going to Nokia so he has some history with the company. MS re-branded themselves as a "Devices and Services Company" last year and in their stores they need a flagship device that, to date, has been their most successful consumer-entertainment brand and device - the xbox console.

MS are not dumb, if xbox is suffering they will adapt it and happily lose money on it, if not only to have it as flagship. Auto manufacturers do this with their sports car model frequently -- they lose money on the sexy sports car but keep selling it and marketing it as it adds to the overall brand and makes their other vehicles more desirable as a result. Same for MS and their fledgling Surface line of products.

So apparently there has been layoffs at Sony Santa Monica (God of War) possibly cancelling one of its projects.

I'm thinking this is a result of them not really taking God of War to that next level on PS3. The games were solid, but they didn't blow you away like the two PS2 titles did..

God of War 3 was one of the best selling games on PS3 (outsold the Uncharteds). It was a shit game compared to the others, but the publisher doesn;t care about that.

I'm tempted to take a crap, take a picture of it, and then post it to Konami and ask them what's the difference between the new Castlevania and my picture.

Probably the textures.

I wish I could agree. I probably blazed through it. I preferred the impact of one and the craft of 2 (and even the overall package of the first PSP game).

It was alright, but the weird stuff near the end soured things up for me. I don't think puzzles and combat were too different or better than GoW2, but it has been a while and I usually only mash one button to get through those games.

So the new IP was bascially the same as Destiny and when Destiny was shown they were like "oh shit what do we do now"

According to our sources, a majority of layoffs consist of key staff that were working on Santa Monica’s new IP, the project now more or less scrapped into oblivion. While details on the project are scarce, we’ve been told it was a science fiction title not all that far removed from Bungie and Activision’s Destiny, and a very large project at the studio, with sources expressing very positive enthusiasm for the project’s vision and potential. We’ve also been told that after Destiny was formally revealed parts of Santa Monica’s sci-fi project underwent rather significant changes, the original vision apparently quite similar to what Bungie is cooking up, changes applied to distance the two. Based on information supplied, we’re lead to believe the choice to divert Santa Monica’s project away from Destiny comparisons lead to somewhat troubled development, the studio unable to fully get the project back on course, ultimately culminating in its cancellation.

As for Santa Monica’s future, sources reveal that Sony’s prime objective with staff remaining from the now cancelled sci-fi IP is to move them over to development on a next generation God of War (among other things), set to launch at some point on PlayStation 4. While the move is hardly unsurprising, given the expectation that Sony would not abandon one of its most popular intellectual properties, we’re told a number of ex-scifi IP staff moved over aren’t happy about the change and are lamenting the loss of their original project.

Cancelling a game because it was similar to another one? Unprecedented.

Nah it was more that Stig's team lost focus and couldn't figure out how to change their game to make it different. So the project fell apart.

Yeah I enjoyed God of War 3, but it did not blow me away like the PS2 titles. It felt like just a better looking version of those, without the wow factor. I wonder if God Of War PS4 will be the same deal. It feels like that franchise has run its course though, in that setting and story. They should retire it and come out with a new setting and story....maybe something set in the Viking universe instead of Greek.
