I feel for you, buddy, I really do.  I've been in a funk as well, beating myself up over my current predicaments, pursuing this conservatorship for my uncle and working seven days a week.  I keep asking myself, "How the hell did I get myself in this mess?"  I've had a turn of luck the last few days and was able to get Christmas presents for the wife, my son and nephew.  Christmas is beginning to feel like ...Christmas again.

Fell into a serious funk in the last week or so. Haven't been around too much. Everyone's probably tired of hearing about it, but the calm AFTER the "Storm" has finally given me some time to reflect on what happened and time to try and unwind. Didn't work. Just gave me time to "think" ... Yay. There are still homes that are ruined and being salvaged and rebuilt around me. There's still convoys of trucks full of ruined cars passing by the main roads nightly to be inspected by insurance workers. Whole beaches and beach communities are gone and are not likely coming back.

I got by mostly unaffected (many of my family members were not so lucky) and I did whatever I could to help --BUT-- when you see such devastation around you for such a prolonged time, "Survivor's Guilt" becomes a real thing.

I don't know if it's the time of year and people are busy or if it's human nature to avoid unpleasant situations, but I am SUPER disappointed to say NONE of my close friends (in NYC, NJ, Upstate and unaffected areas of Long Island) have either visited or come by to help or offer a hand or just to simply take me out to get away from all of "this." Things like this storm definitely leave you feeling VERY vulnerable and helpless in general, but feeling like you are ALONE in all of it makes it a thousand times WORSE.

Last time I felt THIS alone was when I was injured. My gaming in the last week regressed back to that time. I went to town on the Virtual Console on the Wii U and bought: Ys: Book 1 & 2, Super C, Ogre Battle 64 (yes, again), CastleVania III, Alien Soldier, Gradius II: Gofer no Yabou, Super Metroid, Devil's Crush and Axelay. These represent some of my happiest "gaming" moments from back then, and I'm hoping they help pull me out of this now.

The shootings in the Mall in Oregon and the Elementary School in Connecticut left me utterly heartbroken (again). If anyone is interested in sending well-wishes or gifts or flowers or ANYTHING to the kids in Connecticut, at least, here's the address to do so:

Sandy Hook Elementary School:

12 Dickenson Drive, Sandy Hook, CT 06482

A few surprises are headed their way for the kids during the holiday season, the nature of which I can't disclose YET, but it made me feel a tiny bit better that I was able to do something for them.

Doesn't make me feel any better that I totally overlooked Robio's Campaign that was sitting right under my nose here... SO VERY SORRY about that!

If you've sent me messages online and they went ignored, I apologize for that too... I'm looking forward to some Holiday Peace and Cheer (hopefully) soon, and HOPEFULLY that will mean some online time with people from here (Travo, amongst others) soon too.

Sorry for the sad-sack, rant...

...but that's what I was doing this weekend.

I am sorry to hear this Leo but I feel I need to be the realist here. You have gone far above your call of duty after the hurricane. There is absolutely no reason for you to be bringing yourself down after everything you have done simply cause you dont have the power to make everything be fixed again or make everyone care as much as you. You have done so much, you should be proud. It was a horrible event but the people will get by, its what humans do, their burden is not your burden. I am not saying not to help, you have and please continue to do so, its the helping and then feeling guilty that you cant do more that is too much. You are simply bringing yourself down for no real reason when you should be proud of the help you have done.

My two cents, I just hope you dont get too down Leo.

Okay, Aspro. I'm going to have to boot up Dead Souls today just to see what the fuck you're doing wrong. I know there's a way to spin around 180 degrees which is extremely helpful.

First person aiming probably sucks by default, though...I can't really remember first person aiming which means I must have barely used it.

Tom Brady almost pulled off probably the best comeback of his career, down 31 to 3 against the 49ers to tie it at 31 apiece....but then the Pats defense instantly blows the fucking game. lol

Brady must want to bring Ty Law and Rodney Harrison back in a time machine in the worst way.

Now the Broncos have the 2 seed and Brady will have to go to Denver to beat Manning. Man I cant wait for the playoffs, I want Manning to beat the golden boy.

Is Brady supposed to be the golden boy? lol

Well anytime the Pats lose its just about never Brady's fault. Its usually either bad defense or recievers not catching the ball. I don't think I've ever watched a game and said "Brady blew this game".  I would personally like to see a Super Bowl rematch of the Pats and 49ers., with Gronk playing.

I'm sick of the Manning brothers. Though I would like to see Eli go down in the super bowl like he should have done the other 2 times if it wasn't for velcro head in 2007 and Welker dropping the fuckin' ball last year. crying

Playing Trine 2, Mighty Switch Force, Nintendoland and Zombi U.

Zombi U is great, got to the Tower of London. Game is really tense and interesting. But I got stuck, they wanted me to evac to the top of the tower. I killed all the enemies but both doors up to the top were locked. No lockpick, no code, no barricade, just.... locked. So I had nowhere to go and decided to trek back to the safehouse and resume the next day. So I was sprinting back, was at the docks, decided to drop into the water and swim 6 metres to the next ladder. As soon as I plopped into the water it was instant death! It was a 10 ft drop into water I knew you could swim in!!!

My character was the fat guy, I was doing great, had accumalated a shotgun, silenced pistol, bow, AK47, flares, 5 molotov cocktails. And I was DEAD.

So I turned off the U and thought I might be able to go to my last save. But the game had auto saved so my dude was dead. indecision

Thankfully when I went back to the docks my dead player was floating in the water like a turd so I just walked back up to him and took all my items back. Thank heavens.

So, just after you break out into the Tower of London courtyard with the AK47, they ask you to evac to the top of the tower, but the door is locked and the door back to the safehouse at the top of the ladder is locked too. What am I missing?

Anyone check out those Luminous engine videos from the weekend? The faces were amazing even up close. From the neck down though the character models weren't doing anything special. Seems they pumped all the resources into the face, which is the right thing to do because that is what we focus on anyway. Shame seeing average current gen costumes though.

Dark Souls II details have spilled onto the internet courtesy of the latest issue of Edge.

For issue 249, which contains a ten-page feature (buy it online), the Edge team were treated to a ten minute demo of the sequel and described it as an "athletic leap forward in terms of graphical fidelity".

"There was an endearing shonkiness to the visual presentation of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls," reads the feature. "You never sensed photorealism was a virtue the team held in particularly high regard."

"Dark Souls 2, by contrast, looks effortlessly ready for the next generation of consoles, on a par with the fidelity of, say, Watch Dogs and Star Wars 1313."

It goes on to say its visuals come "tantalisingly close" to hyper-realism.

According to Edge the sequel has been in development since September 2011 and will be "roughly the same size as its predecessor".

As implied by the name, Dark Souls 2 is a direct sequel to Dark Souls, but isn't set in Lordran. Although From Software didn't disclose the name of the new setting, it did say the name "will be key to the story" and will be revealed eventually.

Newly appointed director, Tomohiro Shibuya, was cagey on story details, offering up only a high-concept overview: It will once again focus on a cursed character seeking out a cure for his affliction.

Speaking about what distinguishes Dark Souls 2 from its predecessor, Shibuya alluded to "the concept of time and the existence of time" as key to game. He also says that "action" is something that he wants to improve in the game, be it motions or the combat system.

On the goal of making the game more accessible, Shibuya said familiar systems will be made much easier to understand.

"I personally feel the covenant system was something that was difficult to fully absorb and experience [in] Dark Souls," he said. "I intend to make it more accessible to players. And that's not just with the covenant system, but with a lot of other aspects that I felt were difficult to adapt to."

Finally, Shibuya discussed the inclusion of vehicles: "We want to constantly think of something new that hasn't been tried before, so that's where that idea [of the chariot] came up," he explained.

"Being in a ship or boat is definitely something we are considering but being able to control one is not in the works."

The Dark Souls 2 dev team is "Substantially bigger" and From Software has "nearly doubled the internal team focused on world creation alone," according to Edge. The game is estimated to be roughly 25% complete.

Xbox Japan marketing during TGS Spring 2001. The poster shows Bill Gates holding a burger and the new smaller Xbox pad.

Been reading the why Xbox failed in Japan article. This was a real advert? lol I always thought it was a gaming forum joke?

Eurogamer said:

An earlier PC game Microsoft had brought to Japan had a main character with only a few fingers, and Microsoft was told that was a taboo because it had a connection to the Yakuza cutting fingers off.

When it came to the Xbox, the befuddling feedback continued. “We were told we couldn't call it the Xbox because X is the letter of death,” Fries remembers. “We were told we couldn't make it black because black is the colour of death. I was like, isn't the PlayStation black? Rules that apply to you as an outsider don't necessarily apply to insider products.”

Fries was told he couldn't release Halo the way it was in Japan because Japanese players wouldn't be able to deal with the dual sticks. “So we ended up having to make a bunch of modifications for Japanese players and dumb the game down, make an easier version.”

Wow.

And:

Most of the Japanese backlash to the recently unveiled Xbox revolved around the controller. The “controller débâcle”, as Bachus remembers it now, was the result of two competing factions within the Xbox development team. Microsoft's chief technology officer J Allard and [Xbox software boss] Cam Ferroni wanted to build the ultimate game controller that had everything the team liked about its rivals: the expansion port from the Dreamcast, the two thumbsticks from the PlayStation DualShock and six buttons, which was great for playing fighting games on the Sega Mega Drive.

Ed Fries at the time of the Xbox's launch - a launch he was instrumental in.

Microsoft's hardware technicians wrapped plastic around those features and came up with the original Xbox controller design, codenamed Duke. Testing showed it didn't cause much of, if any, muscle stress in the hand. Blackley and Bachus and celebrated programmer Mike Abrash thought it was enormous, and felt everyone else would too.

The Japanese “flipped out”, Bachus says. “They said, 'obviously this is going to fail. Nobody is going to buy this.' Then they started rethinking their commitments to the platform. They said, 'this combined with the enormous giant console says you really don't intend for this to be successful in Japan.'"

How Microsoft missed out on Resident Evil 4:

“What do you guys have to offer?” Mikami asked, bluntly.

Eventually an exasperated Mikami boiled it down: 'what is your philosophy? Sony says games are entertainment, something larger, fuelled by the Emotion Engine. Nintendo says games are toys, created by the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto, perhaps the greatest game developer of all time. What do you feel?' Microsoft had no answer.

“I almost jumped out the window because we had said repeatedly over and over and over that we aspire to enable games that could be considered to be art, much like film,” Bachus says, “that because of the maturity of the development tools and the APIs and the power of the technology, game developers on Xbox would be able to concentrate on the finesse features that elevated games to being something more than they were otherwise.

“So the guy who reported to me said, 'oh that's so great! I wish that I had known that.' But unfortunately it was too late.”

Bachus flagged down Pat Ohura, the head of Xbox Japan at the time, and told him to jump on the next train to Osaka to salvage the deal. But he was too late. Mikami had already met with Nintendo and pledged Resident Evil to its consoles. “That's why Resident Evil 4 was a Nintendo exclusive and it took a while for it to come to Xbox. That was very frustrating.”

Ed Fries has his own tales of Xbox exclusives that got away. One involved Square - the only major publisher not to support the Xbox at launch - and massively multiplayer online game Final Fantasy 11.

Square wanted to bring the game to the Xbox, but Microsoft's Xbox Live team in Redmond resisted, pushing back against the idea of having a more open platform. Square wanted to create a single world where PC players and Xbox players could interact together - a difficult technical challenge to resolve.

Dang.

So back to Zombi U, if you are worried about difficulty, I would say don't be.

I don't find the game hard at all. It's always fair and do-able and never really punishing - unless it's trying to be funny.

I don't get some of the bad reviews saying you are left with only your cricket bat and no ammo - so it's boring? I have a stash of 6-8 molotov cocktails, there are grenades about a lot. I have two pistols, a shotgun, sniper rifle, dart gun, AK47. I have two full packs of pistol ammo and two pistols already full with ammo, 10 shotgun shells, 8 darts, 4 grenades.

If this were a FPS sure, this ammo would not be a lot but you face invidividuals or a small bunch of enemies you can usually down with one grenade or molotov. So what's the problem? If I wanted to I could blast my way through the game but there is no need to. You don't have to just use the cricket bat endlessly but it is really useful for saving ammo and being silent. I mix things up, like do a couple of headshots and finish with the bat.

Japan and Europe have had their fun, now it's time for the North American eShop to get in on the action. Each of the classic NES Mega Man titles (that's 1~6) will come to said eShop beginning with the original Mega Man on December 27 - that's 10 days from now!

This will be followed by Mega Man 2 on February 7, with the rest of the games coming in regular intervals throughout 2013. You'll soon have the whole collection on one handheld!

SUPER MARIO MAKER LEVELS:

  • SMB Mix-Up! (1AB2-0000-0047-5A7D)
