^What he said, and apparently it somehow got 100 listens regularly in the past. How the fuck that happened and who those people are nobody knows. It also affects us in no way given that these people don't comment here or on iTunes. If they did still wouldn't really matter, though.

The only reason I stopped listening is because the thread on the gaming forum disappeared.

As for the Wii rumors vis a vis power, I quote Method Man, "I could give it to you, but what you gonna do with it?"

I really don't care until it releases. It is hard to conceive that it would only be on par with a 360 given that even the 360 cut corners (and that was 5-6 years ago).

It be virtually impossible for the Wii not to be more powerful as the current gen. But like Foolz and Method Man said, it's what they do with it that matters.

I'm still not buying until I can feel what the controller feels like in a store, I'm still sceptical about the form factor. Also still interested in how they handle local multiplayer and the controllers.

IMO I don't think third parties are going to do much at all with the power, or if they do it will be unseen. As in the higher power will most probably be needed to get a different 3D scene on the padlet screen so in essence resources would be split between TV and pad screen and you wouldn't see a graphical difference that noticible - in terms of it being 'better' than 360.

I also do not think that there will be a lot of exclusives on this thing, mostly ports of 360 games and then devs will go onto making Nextbox and PS4 games so you won't get a lot of ground up Wii U games not from Nintendo, which show what it can do. You would also have to have a dev just use the pad screen as a 2D menu, or item switching device and that would leave max power to render visuals on the HDTV. That's when you could see a difference.

You should see the difference between RE Revelations in 2D vs 3D. Flip that 3D slider to off and you instantly get better aliasing, smoother edges and a better frame rate and it makes a big difference.

The article kind of seemed like a badly written April Fools Joke by someone wanting to piss off Nintendo fans. lol I'll tell you what though, if its not true its a pretty shitty thing to spread false negative rumors as truth about any system. If it gets around enough it will be something people believe whether true or not.

But yeah I don't see why Nintendo wouldn't at LEAST use a card like the 4870 at this point. They're pretty cheap now. And highly capable.

GI and Eurogamer and Digital Foundry are all affiliates, pretty much the same site. DF had that article that said that the Wii U casing was so small it had to be crappy performance.

This is the GC and Xbox 1 motherboards next to each other.

Well the Gamecube proved that Nintendo can be masters at packing power in a small shell. I don't understand why people forget this. The only reason the Wii wasn't any fucking smaller is because you wouldn't be able to put a disc in it or have those Cube ports on the side if it was! lol

Especially if they're not putting a big hard drive in the new system (which I think is a mistake, but if that's the only mistake I will take it) I don't see why it couldn't be a fairly compact console. You borught up a good point about the dev kits too...how there is different versions out there. Nintendo has likely just started sending out dev kits to some of the smaller developers and I'm sure only the best of the best have the most recent, top spec kits right now. So if this low power story is true, it could be coming from guys who don't even have the kits that will be the final machine.

Either way, if the console is going to be able to run a 1st generation Zelda that looks like that, its a powerful console beyond the 2005/2006 consoles.

Yeah on the forum, there was the podcast thread and I could keep up with all the new comments and podcasts and see what I missed. With the podcast page and separate threads it's like a rollercoaster and I can't keep up with it all.

That Zelda demo was realtime and can be done, but from what I hear it was done by a 3rd party with art input from Nintendo's Zelda team. Whether EAD could do a Zelda looking like that, a full scale game? I'm not sure if they could maintain that quality in a large game, they don't have the experience.

I don't understand some GAF people who point out that the Zelda demo was in one room with no AI. That demo 'room' is the single largest room or chamber that has ever been seen in a Zelda game, zelda doesn't do indoor areas bigger than that so I don't see why Wii U couldn't do that with a few enemies in the room? It's not like Zelda is a game that throws tons of enemies at you at once, there would be 6 bad guys max in that room in traditional Zelda design.

Well the wii is a shrunk down GC plus+ in a much slimmer form, so I would think that almost 7 years later Nintendo would be able to fit 360 graphics into a slim shell too, assuming they used modern chipsets and all. Digital Foundrys argument is that the slim 360 and PS3 aren't nearly as slim as Wii U, but they have to make their slim models with the original tech and compatibility in mind. If you are designing hardware from scractch with modern components I assume you would be able to make a smaller machine?

I think the DF article said that the only reason PS3 slim wasn't slimmer was because it had the power brick inside it? Is this true? Anyone own one? I can't remember? The Wii U has a 360 style external brick and it will use SDcards and maybe have a small flash drive built in like wii had.

New Fire Emblem Awakening showcases marriage and dual battles

Take your children into battle

Birth, life, marriage and death. It's all in the new Fire Emblem 3DS game. Yes, just as in Harvest Moon games, you can get married and have children in Nintendo's new strategy game.

The most significant thing about this is that you can recruit your own children to fight on your side. If you have the perma-deaths switched on, this could add an extra level of emotion when your offspring die in battle.

Speaking during the latest Iwata Asks interview, Nintendo's Genki Yokota said that love is one of the major themes in the game. However, this isn't the first time a Fire Emblem game has featured marriage and producer Hitoshi Yamagami admitted that he was influenced by the marriage elements in the Japanese-only Super Famicom game Fire Emblem Seisen no Keifu.

In Fire Emblem Awakening, you can marry any of your allies as well as your My Unit characters. Special visuals have been created for marriage proposals.

LOL

I definitely expect this, and just about every other major Wii, Gamecube, and N64 franchise to be getting the HD treatment. Its why I look upon my Wii collection with uncaring eyes. cheeky

I like the blue box too BTW...gives it a blu ray type look. Definitely cooler than the crappy white Wii boxes.

It's not just the one thread. Put it this way, the old way was like a stop on the way to work.

Now it's like having to make a special trip out of town. I know it's only a couple of clicks away and all but I need to remind myself to go there and check everything.

GAF is funny, so this is the DF graph they had up to say that the wii U is so small it has to be weak:

GAF dude said:

The Xbоx weight 8.8 pounds and is:

12.6 in wide x 4 in high x 10.2 in deep

The Xbоx 360 weights 7.7 pounds and is:

12.15 in wide x 3.27 in high x 10.15 in deep

whoa the xbox 360 is going to be weaker than the xbox!!!

Other GAF dude said: "The Wii U has a larger rear fan, an additional side fan, and at least twice as much vent area. Combined with tech that's at least 9 years newer than the Wii, smaller die sizes and no space taken up by Gamecube ports/memory slots, and it makes for a console you can't just compare using volume alone."

Anyone remember this article? It was from September last year

THQ Wii U Developer Quote of the Day: THQ on Power and Graphics

Question: What games should gamers be most excited for from THQ?

THQ Employee: Well, personally, gamers are most excited for "Darksiders II" and "Metro: Last Light".

Question: And what platforms will we see these games on?

THQ Employee: Both games are expected for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii U, and PC.

Question: Is there any graphical differences between the console versions and the PC version?

THQ Employee: Well I would expect the PC versions to be graphically superior over the console versions. And I'm sure the Wii U versions of Darksiders 2 and Metro Last Light will be superior to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions.

Question: In what ways would the Wii U version be superior over the 360/PS3 versions?

THQ Employee: Well the Wii U is full of potential as far as specs go. I know that Metro: Last Light is running at a good 50-60 fps on the PC, so I'm not sure how the Wii U version will compare to that. But the Wii U version of games from ALL developers and publishers, have potential for much smoother framerates, improved textures, and additional bonus content that the 360/PS3 version's won't have. In a way, buying the Wii U version over the 360/PS3 versions, will be like buying the Blu-ray version of a movie instead of the standard dvd version. You get better visuals, and more additional content with the Wii U version of any game compared to the other console version. But this will only happen as long as a developer or publisher puts in the time and effort instead of doing a straight port.

Question: I noticed a lot of games for 360 and PS3 don't take advantage of TRUE 1080p. Could we see more games on Wii U taking advantage of true 1080p resolution?

THQ Employee: The Wii U is much more powerful than the other HD consoles, so Wii U doesn't have a huge problem doing 1080p for the majority of its games. Will Darksiders 2 and Metro: Last Light be in 1080p on Wii U? I can't speak for the teams behind those games. I don't work on those specific teams so I can't say what they plan to do with the Wii U versions of their games as far as graphics or content go. I do know based on the specs I've seen, the console is more than capable of graphics that surpass current consoles. It's like I said before. Expect majority of third party Wii U games from most publishers to have true 1080p, additional content, and smoother framrates than what the PS3/360 versions offer. If you want the DEFINITIVE version of any game in your library, I would suggest either the PC version or the Wii U version...at least for now. This is not a knock against the 360/PS3 versions of any games either. Fans of the 360 and PS3 are the majority of the gamers who game...period. So publishers have to give them the best product we can.

Question: There is a lot of emphasis on graphics nowadays. Where do you see graphics going with future consoles? And will the Wii U be able to graphically compete against new consoles from Sony and Microsoft?

THQ Employee: Listening to people within the company, people are pretty happy with the specs of the Wii U. I don't think anyone has anything to worry about. There is one thing I want to mention though. Better graphics is not all rosy for gamers in the long run. Better graphics means that game developers have to increase their staff and their budgets so games will tap into the full potential of next gen hardware. The costs to hire more artists or programmers to a team would get passed down to gamers. Which is why 360 and PS3 games went up 10 bucks compared to the previous generation with Playstation 2, GameCube, and Xbox. It's fun to dream about the possibilities of the kind of graphics you could see if a console had 10 times better graphics than the current consoles. But with a console that is 10 times more powerful...expect 10 dollars to be added to the price tag every generation. Again, I'm just speculating. I'm not saying any publisher would add to the price. But games aren't selling like they use to, and costs to produce high budget games need to be passed down to the consumers who can afford to play. I predict a very expensive future in gaming.

^Exactly what I was saying!

The Dreamcast wasn't as big as the Playstation or the N64 either...so I guess it too was weaker. surprise

I would be shamefully embarrased and never post in it.

Fable: The Journey Kinect criticism "unfair", say Fable's creators

Dene Carter said there's plenty of room within the popular Fable franchise for spin-offs, including the likes of a Kinect exclusive.

"Why there can't be room for a Kinect side spin-off of the Fable franchise I don't know," he said. "That seems a bit odd. I can't think of any good reason why that would not work. If this was a Mario thing for example, if this was a Mario shooter based on the Wii controller, nobody would go, 'That's a terrible thing. That should never have happened. That's a betrayal blah blah blah vitriol vitriol.'

"But strangely enough Fable seems to be treated very differently from that. We all know it's a franchise. We all know it's a brand. The fact somebody wants to do something a bit different with that brand while we're waiting for the next big game, that doesn't seem like something people should get too angry about. If you don't like it, don't buy it."

He added: "If they were talking about the core franchise, I would have an awful lot of time for that. It's more the fact that they're complaining about a different team doing something different based on the franchise. If it was called Black & White shooter I don't think we'd have had the same level."

"When Mario Kart came out, nobody was going, what?! There's no jumping! That's not the next Mario game! What are you talking about Miyamoto! I hate you! I'm going to burn your house down and kill your children!" Simon said.

Wait, a mario shooter?

What was the reaction when a Sonic game got guns?

Anyway, yesterday a well known GAF poster had a thread announcing James Bond Skyfall Wii U. Then his post was hastily deleted and he vanished.

The game will be a multiplat, I'm just interested because didn't Activision shutdown the developer of that third person Bond game? So.... could Eurocom be making it? A man can hope.

Give me a hells yeah for todays Wii U news from a named (not anonymous) developer at Gearbox actually working on Aliens Wii U

Wii U has “more RAM” than other current consoles and “really great processor”, says Aliens: Colonial Marines director

Yesterday’s rumour mill was churning out stories about ‘anonymous’ developers complaining that the Wii U is less powerful than the PS3 and Xbox 360. In this Aliens: Colonial Marines video interview, Brian Martel, Chief Creative Officer at Gearbox Software and director of Aliens: Colonial Marines, seems to suggest otherwise.

“The machine itself will be one of the best looking versions of the game [sic]… because they’ve got more RAM than some of the other things [platforms]“, says Martel. “They’re late in the cycle so they’ve got this really great processor.”

Last week Randy Pitchford was enthusing that Aliens: Colonial Marines Wii U would be the definitive version of the game thanks to the unique properties of the Wii U controller. In the below interview, Martel says it will also be one of the best looking

There it is, more ram, really great processor, best version of the game we heard already

Pitchford said:

“The Wii U version has so much more to offer … no other platform can do what the Wii U can do. If you love 360 games, you are not used to being in a world where you have this new interface. But once you get used to that, you imagine the possibilities; there are some opportunities that are just not possible on any platform that does not have that device.”

Regular readers of Nintendo Gamer will be familiar with this line of chat about the Wii U controller from Pitchford. In this Randy Pitchford Aliens: Colonial Marines interview we posted a few months back he told us “We’ve been developing a number of interesting features using the unique capabilities of the controller and the hardware.”

And we already heard from Gearbox last year that it would be running at a higher resolution than we've seen on consoles before, maybe he's talking texture resolution?

Here's what the Aliens director said exactly:

"I think things like the Wii U are really becoming very sexy with what you can do with the controller and especially with what you're able to do with things, like using motion tracker or whatever sub-gameplay that you'll see on there. I think that that's a, compelling experience. I think the machine itself will be one of the best looking versions of the game because you know, they've got more RAM then you know, some of the other things (platforms) and because they're late in the cycle so they've got this really great processor and some of the other stuff. This particular engine has the potential to really cross the generational gap between now and then."
