How can you say they're not true CV titles? There have been many more Metroidvania games than the old platforming ones. That's what Castlevania is now.
"But now it has arrived, and, holy crap it sucks for sooo many reasons! Hang on tight, Metroid fans, this is gonna hurt!"
(Note: I'm not happy the game sucks. I just really enjoyed the commentary in this video review)
*shudders at the thought* Thankfully, Konami disagrees with you, robio, otherwise this new CV and CV Rebirth wouldn't exist.
6.25 -- they went lower than their Aussie review.
That's a big indicator for me since GI usually inflates scores for games they think will sell at their GameStop mothership. It must be really bad.
Yup lots of crappy platforming.
Oh god. Metroidvanias are the best Castlevania's. They have been around enough to be considered the true Castlevania. The series evolved like RE did.
Not in this case Aspro.
I read the review on their site and it looks like the reviewer is just going on some Metroid fanboy rant and not talking about the game itself. He complains about all the story stuff like cut scenes, Samus' voice, frequent narration, etc., and some Metroid convention breaking things like having squad teammates, the lack of feeling isolated, etc.
But it's odd that he doesn't really mention the game or if it's fun or not.
When I read other reviews like IGN and Gamespot, they have the same criticism as the GI reviewer but they still gave it good scores because they say the game is still action-packed and fun.
Personally, I usually don't trust GI reviews...and sometimes IGN, but in this case, I think IGN and Gamespot are right-on.

Evolved? In CVs case, de-evolved is more like it, as in the fun factor de-evolved into something that was not fun anymore.
You get treated to see the horrors of the Japanese-styled Simon Belmont remake for that comment!
See it and makes your eyes burn!!!

Now Playing: Golden Sun Dark Dawn, God of War Ghost of Sparta, and DKC Returns
Watch a few random streams and you’ll see why some shouldn’t rate games though. I’ve seen players clumsily jump around obstacles when Samus would automatically and swiftly climb over them if they had simply run into them instead, players who only ever remembered to dodge by accident, players who just seemed to lack any kind of “game logic” understanding, what with taking them minutes to realise that the enemies keep spawning in certain rooms if they don’t destroy the nest structures and other similar stuff. Some seemed oblivious to the first person perspective or the fact you can dodge while using it. Others were unable to use the finishers, and instead blasted downed enemies until they got up and repeated the fight. Let’s hope those who reviewed the game actually took a look at the manual and/or game hints because really, when a game uses such simple functions and yet people have trouble understanding how it all works, sheesh, it sure makes you lose faith in human ability…
Also, too many reviewers go all "argh, you can't move in FPV like Prime!" or "argh, it's not a SNES game, there's cut scenes and stuff!" instead of reviewing the game for what it is, and not what it isn't... Meh.
As for CV, SotN is my favorite, but any other Metroidvania has been unecessary, just SotN's little sisters or something. Some were fun enough to finish (yet also short, like Aria of Sorrow) but they really didn't hold much value until Ecclesia which did the right thing and went back to the classic style in some ways. There's only so much slow-paced level-based exploration you can do before it becomes stale and feels like a repeat, whereas a challenging action platformer is still exciting because there's actual danger, not a mere grind... That said I don't like the controls found in the old Castlevanias anymore either, I think they can think of other ways to keep the challenge and basic structure while modernising the games' design in other ways. It's similar to how I don't really enjoy Mega Man's limited controls after playing games like Metal Slug and Gunstar Heroes which make you feel in full control able to do all sorts of things. Though they aren't really platformers, they could do a best of both worlds thing.
The optimist proclaims we live in the best of all possible worlds
while the pessimist fears this is true.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well its you, of course you like simple go left to right Castlevania.
I don't think I've ever relied on a single GI review -- but they can be counted on for one thing -- and that is inflating their reviews for "popular" games by about 2 points over everyone else.
Having said that I know they have a fair bit of disdain for Nintendo though since GI's thing is all about access to developers and exclusives (which Nintendo does not provide to anyone other than Nintendo Power).
Controversy -- that sucks. I was hoping it would be another Prime-type shift for the game that everyone could get around.
Hey, arcade CVs go up and down too, ya know!
They're a spin-off series that became popular and well accepted because of the rise in dominance of portable systems. They're good games, but not true CV titles.
I think it could've been. It had the potential. It was just in the wrong developers' hands.
I think the problem was that Nintendo and/or Sakamoto gave Team Ninja too much freedom and influence to this game. Remember all those concerns when Sakamoto wanted a 2.5D Metroid and it was Team Ninja who insisted that they wanted to make it fully 3D and with Ninja Gaiden combat?
I wonder who's idea it was to put a story to Samus. If it was Team Ninja then they just almost made the worst Metroid game in the series and the biggest disappointing Nintendo game of all-time. I say "almost" because the game itself looks like it's still good and salvaged with fun exciting combat. But so much of the reviews are saying how horrible the storytelling, narrative, Samus' voice, and cut scenes are! DAMN YOU Team Ninja!!!
It's definitely not in the Prime level or Super Metroid level of classic status, which is kind of a bummer. I'm still excited about it just because it's Metroid though.
Now Playing: Golden Sun Dark Dawn, God of War Ghost of Sparta, and DKC Returns
Metroid is not really that popular.
I really want to slap you in the face.
