But who is their demographic? I'd argue that there are 2 kinds of PC gamers: the hardcore who care about pixels, shaders and frames per second who are sufficiently tech savvy to create their own bespoke streaming solution to stream their PC powerhouse to their tv, and on the other end the casual gamers who game on PC because that's what they already own for study or work and they don't see the point in buying an expensive box to put under their telly. Is there really enough middle ground for this to be succesfull?
At least with the SteamDeck there was a unique selling point. It's a Switch for PC gamers! The Gabecube doesn't have anything that comes close to that as a selling point. Unless it's priced very competitively, which I doubt as Valve won't want to take a hit with every unit sold and they won't be able to get as good a deal on parts as Sony and MS.
"Steam has over one billion registered accounts, but it's more useful to look at active user numbers, which were around 154 million in April 2025. The platform also saw a peak of over 41.6 million concurrent users in October 2025."
Valve believes there's a market for it there. I'm no market analyst; I just think they making a cool product That I believe a lot of people will enjoy. People upgrade their computers every so often. Steam machine gives them another hardware option That may be more user friendly.
Valve makes 30% on every dollar spent on Steam games, so They don't need to sell 100 million steam machines to be successful.
Well if they price the Steam Machine right then Valve will definitely have me on board. I’ll use it for some PC centric games like RTS games, maybe some sims, and probably some other games that I have on consoles but want to get the PC version for mods and what not.
Wtf.
Non sales price?
I see, that article I read and posted is misleading.
Steam Machine seems cool in that I like the idea that PC games you own can be transferred to future PCs or machines to play years from now.
Making it more living room friendly is also cool, but thats why I own consoles. Steamdeck is more appealing to me on the surface, but I'm entrenched with my Switch library.
First screens have leaed as well!
I'm kind of in the same boat. I'm in no position right now to buy a new game machine but if the price were right, I'm certainly interested.
I'd settle for GTAV visuals to have a mobile gta6 game.
We need a new Chinatown Wars.Developers struggle with it ans 12gb would easily fix any problems.
VRAM (Video RAM) Concerns
The main point of contention among gaming enthusiasts is the 8GB of VRAM.
Modern Game Demands: Some recent, poorly optimized titles can struggle with only 8GB of VRAM, even at 1080p resolution, often requiring users to lower texture quality and disable features like ray tracing to maintain smooth performance.
4K Goal vs. Reality: Valve marketed the Steam Machine as a console capable of 4K gaming at 60fps using upscaling technologies like AMD's FSR 3. However, many believe the 8GB VRAM allocation means that achieving consistent 4K 60fps will necessitate significant compromises in graphical settings, as the system needs enough raw frames to upscale effectively.
Affordability Compromise: Valve engineers stated that the 8GB VRAM amount was a choice made to control costs and keep the price down. This mirrors a common industry trend with mid-range GPUs.
System RAM Details
The Steam Machine comes standard with 16GB of DDR5 system RAM, which is generally considered the sweet spot for modern gaming and multitasking.
Adequate for System Needs: This amount of system RAM is sufficient for SteamOS and running most games without performance bottlenecks related to general system memory.
User Upgradeable: Unlike the VRAM which is part of the integrated GPU, the 16GB DDR5 system RAM is on standard laptop-style SODIMM sticks and can be upgraded by the user (as can the SSD storage).
In summary, the "deficit" is specific to the dedicated VRAM pool for the GPU, which can be a limiting factor in some demanding scenarios, rather than a lack of system RAm
____^^ Google
Interesting. So is the 16gb pool of normal RAM too slow for modern AAA gaming? Sound like a weird thing to cheap out on when they could just bump the VRAM to 12gb
That's a more powerful cpu but with reduced vehicles and a few less on screen character models it could look fine. Or smart changes to character model complexity. Hitman WOA Switch 2 has literally hundreds of moving on screen character models.
I wouldn't say the gta character models are that far above Cyberpunk main leads.
The city itself looks great on Switch 2 and the Phantom Liberty looks even better than that, albeit with a wavering framerate when driving in that specific area.
