Players appreciate variety over high performance, argues Miyamoto
In the wake of the Switch’s initial success, Nintendo is looking at more ways it can continue to build on the hybrid console’s unique offerings. Speaking at an annual Shareholder Q&A, Shigeru Miyamoto shared his thoughts on what makes the Switch appealing, and what Nintendo’s next steps should be.
“A lot of people say that what they want out of a new video game system is high performance," said Miyamoto. "But when we look at the sales of Nintendo Switch, it is clear that a large number of consumers worldwide are really looking for more variety in the ways they can play."
And while Miyamoto is sure to note that the “capabilities of the Nintendo Switch are considerable in their own right,” the famed Mario-maker says that Nintendo’s in-house development teams are looking forward to finding new ways to make use of the Switch’s unique offerings.
“I myself really enjoy creating titles like Wii Fit or Nintendogs that are different than our existing franchises, and that's the sort of culture that permeates our entire development staff. “
To that same effect, software division general manager Shinya Takahashi noted that, with key titles like Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild out of the way, the company’s next focus is working on projects that can follow in 1-2 Switch’s footsteps to provide a “new way to play”.
One such avenue could be through embracing the portable aspect of the Switch. Nintendo has typically insisted that the Switch is first and foremost a home console and, despite its portability, isn’t a direct competitor or replacement for its line of 3DS and 2DS handheld systems.
While it is still striving to maintain a balance between its two hardware offerings, Takahashi noted that the Switch’s portability and its unique multiplayer setup are both something Nintendo hopes to explore more in future titles.
“The main characteristic of Nintendo Switch is that you can take it out and get together with others to play anytime, anywhere and with anyone," said Takahashi. "For example, you can pass one of the Joy-Con controllers to the person next to you and start playing with them immediately. We want to use this characteristic of Nintendo Switch in a variety of software [titles]."

Just spotted this, uh oh.
I assumed that after all these IP like Zelda Mario, Xeno, Splatoon, Arms etc this year, they would be releasing new IP or more hardcore games, but it sounds like they got the hardcore games out of the way early so they could do more games like 1, 2 Switch?
Lorne Lanning doesn't have faith in Switch to pull in 3rd parties
"The problem I see at Nintendo is the thinking. I think it killed Iwata"
Really poor word choice.
I always wondered what they'd have up their sleaves for year 2. They seem to be releasing 4 years worth of 1st party games in the span of one year. Where does that leave the Switch for the next 3 years?
https://youtu.be/NK1qKLklzUs
Seriously cannot stress how great this Splatoon 2 Japanese commercial is
More games I thought. I just didn't realise that they would be more like 1, 2 Switch.
Still got Animal Crossing, the new Platinum IP, Metroid Prime 4, No More Heroes 3, new Nagoshi game - probably Yakuza. I assume there's other stuff. Captain Toad 2?
So if they keep up the same rate, that's another 9 months to a year there. Also, I can't recall NMH3 being confirmed for Switch. Travis Touchdown is coming to switch in some form, but it was never specifically said it would be a NMH3. and after NMH2, I'm not sure I even still want a NMH3.
I'd get another ExciteTruck though. Or a 1080°, a WaveRace or an F-Zero. You know, all those great racers Nintendo used to be ace at creating.
I approve of this add and endorce it's suposed greatness.
Also, the .52Gal better be in there with an inkwall sub. I refuse to use more than one gun per franchise.
LOL...Nintendo does this with every system. Blow their load the first two years, then another few years of hardly anything. And now they think they have found the ghost of the Wii with 1,2 Switch. Oh joy.
Watching the Splatoon direct nao
Luigis Mansion 3?
It's funny that gun, when it was first used it was probably peoples first step up from the Splattershot Jr or Splattershot. And people used it properly and got good traction with it, splash wall - then shoot. It was effective. Then people just seem to have stopped using it or stopped using it in the way it was intended. You occasionally see an experienced player using it well and its difficult to fight against, but its rare.
Also, here's the Splatoon 2 Miiverse like message posting in use
I'm obssesed with this commercial, I watched it 10 times on a loop. Now I want a Splatoon in real life. Could it possibly be made like that with a great AR device?
Takahashi says Nintendo internally are working on 33 games - he didn't specify how many were 3ds or cellphone. Specifically he said that they have 11 internal divisions each working on several projects.
He also says they are working on a ton of switch games.
I have an update on my fiasco with Verizon.
Well after getting completely annoyed to the point of snapping like a twig, I did some google digging. This fine upstanding gentlemen on some random forum with people complaining about how bad Verizon is, actually had the email of the CEO & said this is the only way to get anything solved with this company. The thread was from 2010, so I wasn't sure it would even work anymore....but I went and sent an email to this guy detailing all my issues in full.
A half hour later, I get a phone call from one of his minions. Took down all my info, gave me his personal line and said he would be back to me in a week. Also said if I have any other issues just call him direct, don't even bother with customer service.
So like usual with these mega corps, you have to go right to the fucking top to get anything done.
Dayyyyum. Dem Okami Switch graphics are so lifelike! Crazzzzzy.
Pachter: PS5 to be a half step, release in 2019 with PS4 BC
2019 sounds right. PS4 has been out since 2013..that's long enough. And a half step over the Xbox One X is what I'd imagine.
I also definitely think it will be fully BC with the PS4 as long as they don't start using cards like Nintendo. It makes sense having a more streamlined, PC-like design that would be one of the advantages is being able to easily do BC. Unlike past systems with their funky, custom chips.
I kind of would've like to see this gen go longer. I'm frankly tired of the typical gaming cycle.
But we haven't HAD a typical gaming cycle since the PS2 era my man.
True, I guess I want a long cycle like last gen.
Nintendo on Switch production, multiple Switch titles in the works, third parties, Mario Vs. Zelda, & much more
Coming from a Le Monde interview with Nintendo's Shinya Takahashi...
- Nintendo has been able to improve the Switch production line, so more units are coming
- Nintendo worked hard to make sure the Switch was easy to program for
- Nintendo has 11 production units for software, and each one of them is working on multiple projects
- the scope of Zelda: BotW's development team was quite massive, but Zelda games usually are among Nintendo's biggest
- Nintendo will continue to try and create more ambitious titles like this for Switch
- Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda: BotW shouldn't be compared as they're two different types of games
- Breath of the Wild was about open air and freedom, while Super Mario Odyssey is about being locked in a box
- Nintendo won't apply the open-air design of Zelda to every other franchise just because it worked well in Zelda
- Nintendo is open to other partnerships like the one between Ubisoft and Nintendo
- these partnerships must be beneficial to the player, and they depend on the project suggestions Nintendo receives
- the Switch launch titles of Zelda, 1-2 Switch and Snipperclips were chosen to showcase different aspects of the Switch
- the goal is to provide software that is unique to the platform and showcases what it can do
- Nintendo hasn't abandoned more "realistic" games like 1080 Snowboarding and Wave Race
- while Nintendo has a lot of projects in the works, they won't say that those specific franchises are coming back
- if Nintendo has an idea to pursue a realistic, yet fun game, they will certainly do so
- the way Switch software development is handled was done in order to make things easier for third parties to adapt their games
- Nintendo hopes people pick up Skyrim and FIFA in order to see the value in being able to take/play those games anywhere
- Nintendo believes third party opinion of the Switch has changed for the better since it launched
Nintendo thinks Super Mario Odyssey will be a great showcase for Switch's HD Rumble
Coming from Nintendo's Shinya Takahashi...
As you know, we have a certain pride in this technology, but we did not have many games to illustrate it. Mario Odyssey will, I think, be the true ambassador of its interest in a video game. You saw it with the counting of balls in 1-2 Switch, you will find the HD vibration used in a the same way, or even more spectacular in Mario Odyssey, for example when Mario drives a motorcycle or when he falls on plates made of metal. [...] Its specificity is really that this game is going to be the first great ambassador of all that can propose the switch's controllers.
Sadly, Skyrim will be full price for a five year old port and prevent me from buying.
