2001 was the magic year for PS2.  It coasted on its name for a year then MGS2 and GTA3 hit.  There was nothing, nothing at all like GTA at the time and only one console to play it on.  Then Vice City hit, as well as SA a couple years later.  Those are the games that made PS2 the phenomenon that it became.

Played journey again yesterday, super boring, fell asleep while playing and still beat it. Then I played rocket league with Travo and had a blast, what a difference in games.

I was tempted to play through Journey again but changed my mind.

I have it on good authority that Knights of the Old Republic 2 got that update because Disney themselves have been going over the SW titles and were amazed at the quality of the KOTOR series, and recognized that The Sith Lords was missing key content that would make it a better game and demanded that it be fixed in preparation for future entries in the series.

This all came directly from my mind, so take it with a grain of salt.

Like I said, it could have easily launched at the same time as Cube and Xbox and we wouldn't have missed shit.

New IP can't be judged until the third game - Square Enix head

Well tickle me pink....I'm liking Square's new head boss more every goddamn day. This guy is a huge improvement over that last idiot.

So this fuckwad wants you to buy 3 games in the series before you can actually judge it?

Oh....that's what he meant? I thought he was saying the COMPANY can't judge the worth of a franchise until the 3rd game. In that case.....ugh.

I didn't read it, but that was what I took from the news title. Let's look:

Yosuke Matsuda says first two entries allow for experimentation; third game is when scale can be expanded

One of the surprises of Square Enix's E3 press conference last month was the unveiling of a sequel to the 2010 action-RPG Nier. After the first game experienced modest sales and lukewarm reviews, it was by no means an obvious candidate for the franchise treatment. However, recent comments from Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda suggest the company is deliberately slow to judge the potential (or lack thereof) of its new IP.

Speaking with Weekly Famitsu magazine (as translated by Kotaku), Matsuda talked about another of the company's E3 surprises, Project Setsuna, saying he hopes the first title from the new studio Tokyo RPG Factory could be nurtured into another big IP in the company's stable.

"Cultivating a new IP is very important," Matsuda said. "This is my own personal view, but I believe that it is very difficult to immediately build up a big IP. Looking retrospectively at the gaming industry, many games take off or get their big break at their third title. There are cases where the opposite is true of course. [laughs] But regardless, you need at least three games before you can tell whether an IP is going to be really successful or not. I call this my Law of Third Titles. [laughs] That's why for the first and second games, you experiment to a degree where you can still be flexible, and if the series has grown enough to be able to expect a big hit for the third game, you expand the scale. If the third title is successful then all is well."

Project Setsuna is expected to launch next year. The as-yet untitled Nier sequel has no release window at the moment.

So we can expect 3 game series from every new Square IP now?

That was hands down one of the best PS1 games ever. And it was set up for a sequel at the end.

I guess, but wasn't GTA3 originally supposed to be a Dreamcast game? So many of those early classics actually started out as Dreamcast stuff before SEGA took the bullet. And I'd say Prince of Persia kind of started the whole GoW thing.

I just think its funny when people claim PS2 was top dog because of the games, when it was selling like hotcakes before it even HAD games. I still say that first year, people were buying it because it said "Playstation" on it, and because it was the best way to get a DVD player at the time. Also, despite the console selling so many more units than the competition, the VAST majority of the big titles didn't sell any better than the big titles on the other consoles...despite the fact that it sold, what, 120 million more consoles? That is INSANE. And that kind of shows that a good chunk of people just bought it because it was cool to have, or they wanted to watch some movies.

Didn't they only manage to sell like an extra million copies of RE4 over the Cube version, for example? Despite 120 million more people owning PS2 than Cube?

That is true.

All I know is thee PS2 is the only console I ever had to buy 3 times, and it was the system where Final Fantasy went from being my favorite series to something I hated. I'm still bitter.

No, I am certain it's all about the games. It's not like ps2 was so far back. MGS2 was as good looking as most anything on Xbox. GoW games were stunning.  I am not saying it's the best hardware but it's up there with SNES as the greatest console library for a generation.

The library is great, but I definitely wished all those games were on other machines. The exclusives, I mean.

Vader, Gamecube and Xbox smoke the PS2...and like he said in the video even Dreamcast actually has better image quality, if not better polygon power. I have all my consoles hooked up, and the PS2 easily looks worse than the others on a modern TV. Even Dreamcast looks better. XBOX is hands down the best in this regard...its a very easy system to go back to now and play. Most games I've tried are actually in true widescreen with nice clear 480/720p video and Digital sound. And the controller is also a plus. Gamecube also looks pretty damn good still, but you have to deal with the same limitations it always had. The scary thing is, Cube and XBOX weren't pushed to their limits like PS2 was either...I think we could have seen much more out of them. Actually, same for Dreamcast.

But PS2 was in no means BAD....I just feel the same as this guy where I vastly preferred the other 3 consoles. Well, one thing that IS bad with the PS2 is hooking it up to a modern TV. It looks horrible. Games are stretched, and the colors are washed out. Even with component cables. Its weird.

My story. I was a strong adherant to GC+XB, it was a stellar combo, but both consoles got toasted by the longevity of the PS2.  At the time of the XB's abortion (and there is no other word for it, see the XBOX Unlocked podcast with Sheamus Blackley for confirmation) I had more games on XB than PS2.  I had a policy of buying multiplats on XB. By the time they stopped making games for PS2 the tally on my collection was XB: 186 games, PS2: 309 games.

Your opinion is wrong Rob. Nyaa

But also, I don;t know why anyone would play that game a second time. I tend to leave games like that and Last of Us to one playthrough. Maybe in 30 years I'll play it again just to see.

Rise of Tomb Raider PS2 and PC in 2016 The "timed Xbox exclusive" won't be exclusive for all that long.

I take back everything I said about the PS2. It really is the best console ever after all.

Its such a shame the Cube and XBOX both got cut short and never really hit their potential. Even Cube technically lasted until 2006, lets be real....for the most part the Cube died before the XBOX did. The XBOX was weird because like you said, they cut its head off....in a way it was an impressive, aggressive transition from that to 360. They effectively just carried over the games and momentum from one to the other, in the blink of an eye. I get why they did it, but it definitely sucked that it happened that way.
