I'm not sure I'll ever be used to the idea without a Nintendo console.  But all good things....

Iwata can't be fired?

I am sure some board of peoe can make some decision. But they are probably all old traditional Japanese dudes.

It will be interesting to see if these unnamed people , who ever actually owns the company, comes forward and says or does anything.

Sony won't offer option to disable PS4 DualShock 4 light bar. "The LEDs do not use much battery," insists Sony's Shuhei Yoshida

Battery life? I had to put tape over it to keep it from reflecting off my TV, you prat. Easily the most useless "innovation" on the DS4.

Imagine the end of scarface, I picture iwata as tony Montana and all the hitmen are investors. Iwata's little friend is a Reggie launcher.

Everything is Scarface.

Seriously though, what the hell? I read Iwata's statement. He basically is saying "everything is fucked".

Him leaving is not the solution. Not even close. Japanese gaming has changed. Ownership has changed. Buying machines that do just one thing has changed.

Thinking you can slide by with superior IP is hubris. The Wii U is an insult to gamers (in terms of its hardware) and confusing to non-gamers.

They should have competed on the same level hardware-wise as Sony and MS if they want to win the home console space. And give the western regions (where console ownership is still valid) the reins of the console development and marketing.

NJP does handheld, NOA does console (beefed up NOA, not the marketing arm they now are).

What a mess.

Who would've predicted this five years ago?  Of course, people have predicted doom and gloom for Nintendo since..forever, but it's never felt this close.

Nintendo the company is still ok but we have never seen a major console of theirs actually die. GC sold poorly but it lived out a full console life. Wii u will die, it failed. We need to see how Nintendo bounces back cause no other company in the history of games regrouped and successfully made more consoles after one died.

it is Nintendo as we have never seen before so that is scary.

Yes. Nintendo is "fine" but their grip of what makes a compeling console is so far out of their reach at this point. I hope they beef up the 3DS and give us an HDMI dongle until they figure out if a console is something that they can do anymore. Sony has more or less started this with cross-play and with remote play. It's the future.

You can drop those last four words entirely and your statement would still be true. Why is this news now?

Because this was the make-or-break season for Wii U. Then Iwats put out a rambling stament.

With the old man analogy, the guys at Nintendo, developers and who knows how many execs have been there since the NES days and they have seen the ups and downs of the industry. Going back to what Iwata said a few months ago, I'm not going to dig around for the quote but he said something like: "It's not over from 1 years worth of sales" and something like he knows about the ups and downs of the console game, and it's not unusual. There's is a reset button each gen and sometimes you do good, other times not. But he's not a panic mode guy interested in short term profits. To the developers and staff who've been at the company for the past however many decades - Nintendo is more like a family or institution.

As long as it endures, nothing else really matters. Maybe that's a very Japanese outlook.

I think you have to look back and realise just how radical Wii 1 was. A console designed to be $99? A revolutionary control device? 20x less powerful and not capable of comparable multiformat games (like Wii U is)

The original idea was to try something different because the same console at the same spec and price was doing nothing but delivering ever declining returns. They expected it to fail, but would rather have tried it, than done nothing. If you go back and read the interviews that is.

All this doom around Wii U is what could and probably should have happened with Wii. It was the success of Wii and DS that framed the outlook of 3DS and Wii U and who could blame them for doing that after the ridiculous success and profits they reeled in with the same concept before?

I like that you are keeping calm here but in an earlier post I think you are deflecting blame as Iwata did. This is almost all on Nintendo. They do not understand the market anymore and the Wii U was mostly a bad idea from the start, I think everyone knew that.

I see a big difference between the Wii and Wii U, yes the Wii was a crazy idea but it was total new. It was something we had never seen before, that alone gave it a sense of anything can happen. I don't think anyone predicted the success they had but I don't think many outside the usual haters thought it would be a major failure. It seemed like a good idea at the time, a bold one but good one.

Wii U never felt new, its main gimmick was a poor touch screen, something everyone was already familiar with. The message of what this console was from the start has been cloudy. The general public has no clue what it is. From the start it always seemed like a bad idea, the opposite of the wii.

Now the 3DS I admit I was wrong, I thought that would be an absolute major success. Oh well, but the Wii U, man the writing was on the wall already, it didn't have IT, that thing that grabbed everyones attention. I do see what you are saying on that last sentence, Nintendo felt they could make successors to their two best selling machines and tada it would repeat but that was short sighted. Especially with the wii since for 2 years the bubble already burst, it wasnt like the wii craze died down right when the Wii U hit, it was over and done for years, how could nintendo not see that.

I know Nintendo has had its ups and downs and I do honestly feel like they will regroup in the end. That said it can't be stated enough that Nintendo has never seen anything like this before. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE the level of sales the Wii U is at. This is not like anything they faced before. This is not GC, this is not even Dreamcast. This is historically bad, every console with sales like this has died well before its time should have come.
