This article on Gamespot is horrible...did they really compare the Gamecube to the Virtual Boy?

Nintendo’s stock took a huge dive today as the company reassessed the potential success of their Wii U console, dropping expected sales from 9 million to 2.8 million. It’s easy to think Nintendo is doomed, but the resilient developer won’t be that hard to put down; they've had plenty of experience with low sales and failed consoles (just look at the GameCube and the Virtual Boy).

I don't know but everytime I read an article there, they seem either uninformed, biased, or a bad choice of words.

I think they put each example as a respective case. They said low sales and failures, gamecube was the low sales example and vitual boy was the failure example.

I think first and foremost Nintendo needs to get it's online ass in gear.

  • simply have gamertags
  • all things tied to an account not a singular device
  • some kind of unified achievement/trophy system that is laid out just like Microsoft's and Sony's
  • online cross-game voice chat
  • have better sales more often like Sony, Microsoft, and Steam do
  • improve their online infrastructure to better accomodate third parties and dlc

I'd keep the Wii U as is for now, maybe improve storage capacity later on with at least a $50 price-cut before year's end. Ride out the next 4 years but have a vastly improved online ecosystem by time their next console comes out. Their next system should be very similar to what Sony and Microsoft offer especially when it comes to storage capacity. Nintendo's games will be the "unique" factor while being able to get the whole expeirence of third party games will give other gamers less of a reason to buy a different system.

The biggest mistake Nintendo made with the 3DS was not putting another analog nub on it.

Hmm, I don't think I have any 3DS games that would benefit much from a 2nd nub.

Good post.

This right here is why I don't understand why Nintendo thinks they need some kind of crazy hardware idea to be unique (other than using it as an excuse to not compete). As you say, its their SOFTWARE that is unique. That has always been the case. The hardware doesn't need to be. It needs to fall in line with what people want to maximize gamer interest as well as developer interest.

When you have an IP stable that includes Super Mario, Legend Of Zelda, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, Smash Bros, and more among tons of IP's just going to waste, you have all you need to be unique right there.

Just off the top of my head I'd say Kid Icarus and Monster Hunter. However having a second nub probably would have lead to more games that could utilise it better being made.

Ah, Kid Icarus. I forgot about that one. I don't own it, but probably should. Monster Hunter demo was difficult for me to play due to the poor resolution of the 3DS screens, rather than the lack of a 2nd nub, though. I didn't play it for very long, though.

Yeah that's what I think to. I mean sure there were some unique aspects to those games on their system but overall the main things those games have going for them is simply the games themselves are just well made quality Nintendo games that would have been pretty much the same expeirence on any other system.

What's the logic behind them getting out of this console gen early? If they release the console much earlier than the others, then they're behind the ball curve. If they do nothing for a few years while PS4 and Xbox One are fully supported, then their relevancy decreases. What's the long term benefit of them pulling out early?

Aren't they losing money on the hardware? That would be one reason. And they could quickly re-tool if they are just making a PC clone like the other two.

That's short term benefit given their money in the bank.

Nintendo and/or Sega need to use Dankey Kang just like Capcom used Sheng Long. Perhaps he'll save the Wii U.
