  • Wii U sales were up 87 per cent on its last quarter
  • Global Wii U hardware sales to date sit at 3.91 million units.
  • Wii U software in the Q2 period, reached 5.27 million units - a 400 per cent jump on the previous quarter
  • Nintendo 3DS hardware sales reached 2.49 million for the quarter - a year-on-year decline of 22 per cent -
  • 3DS software sales of 16.37 marked a 40 per cent increase on FY2013.
  • In the six months since April, Nintendo made $2 billion in sales, though costs and international market rates left it with a net profit of $6.1 million. The improvement is dramatic - in the same period last year, the company lost $285 million
  • The company said that Wii U hardware still has a negative impact on its profits.

EDIT: I didn't put the 87 percent thing in blue, it was a link that has remained blue but de-linked.

So Wii U software sales have increased by 400% isn't that a 5x rise? A 100% increase is 2x right?

Can't believe, over $2 billion sales = $6.1 million profit

Overall they made 6 mil profit compared to losing 285 mil at the same time last year. So it's like making $231 million more compared to this time last year.

So they sold about 3.5 million Wii U's from launch to March-ish wasn't it? And they are projecting 9 million units sold by spring 2014? They are at 3.9 milion now so they expect to sell 5 million from now to spring next year? Er.... optimistic? If they could sell even launch figures it would be an achievement. Nintendo sales like everyone elses spike at Christmas. Anyone remember that one year Wii had a downward trend, publishers were like the bubble has burst et etc, then during the Christmas period it sold so many units it ended up selling more than the rest combined over the entire year? I'm not saying that's going to happen here at all but with the reduced price and ever growing stable of exclusives, a good Christmas will give them a good platform for 2014 and hopefully get some new software greenlit from 3rd parties.

If not then all Nintendo can do is keep producing software and toughing it out as it were. Dropping the console would be a disaster long term.

So now COD Ghosts is confirmed at 720p on Xbox One and 1080p on PS4

AND

BF4 is 900p on PS4 and 720p on Xbox One.

How does that frame your view of Xbox One hardware wise? 720p is like Wii U and current gen resolution. And from looking at the list of resolutions for games, GAF has a thread, Wii U and X1 seem to have a similar number of 1080p games, both notably less than PS4's list.

Would you be okay with X1 receiving 720p versions of games PS4 can spit out at 1080p? And if so how does that frame your view of Wii U hardware as it's consistently acheiving 720p too?

Of course resolution and framerate are only a couple of aspects regarding visuals but the tech sites tend to use them as metrics.

As for the the differences between PS4 and XB1 it would doesn't matter to me as a player, I am sure I could not tell the difference.  More interesting to me is the why.  If it is an indicator that the xb1 is actually less powerful, then it's another mark against it (along with it's extra $100 price tag).

I don't think it will make a difference in the long term in terms of gaming, osme will "look" better on xb1, others on ps4, but this news could influence some gamers into the ps4 column.  But I suspect that if they are aware of this level of information they are hardcore, and would have made their choice already anyway.

It's a bad quarter for sure. This christmas is make or break for the Wii U.  Dropping the console would be a disaster long-term.  Assuming nothing changes they can muddle through with the U on the strength of evergreen first-party titles.  If I were them, I'd be working on a replacement for 2015 release though.

So I played more LA Noire last night, didn't really take to it.

Virtually empty pointless city with nothing to do, awkward controls, half decentish stories. Solved a case. Don't really like the interrogations that much, press X for doubt, Y for lie etc. It's sort of like Phoenix Wright but unlike those games you cannot re-read the whole testimony before deciding where to press or not. You have one chance. Fail and you fail the interogation and get kicked back into it for another go or the story just moves on. So it either feels like trial and error or you feel like you've missed something. So it feels like the game is sometimes using obtuse logic and bypassing you.

Not to be that guy, but you're playing the game wrong. Maybe not wrong, but you're definitely missing stuff. Just to correct a few misconceptions:

1. You can re-read the interrogation. If you go to the menu there's a transcript of it that you can go back to at any time. Additionally if you walk away from the interrogation before chosing lie, doubt, truth you can replay it.

2.  The city isn't really meant to be interacted with. Despite the looks and the publisher, this is not a GTA game. There are still things going on it though. There's an on-going search for golden film reel canisters that are hidden throughout the city (if you bought the game new it comes with clues to find them). Crimes in progress can be heard over the radio and you can take a break from your main story to go deal with those. And in the middle of a case your partner and you will chat. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes good advice is being passed to you. They're worth listening to. And if you find yourself bored of driving you can always have your partner drive and that will automatically send you to your destination.

Also, if you're bored you can rack up city damage. Break enough shit and you'll get a good trophy.

3. The interrogation process isn't perfect and can kind of ruin the game if you're not trying to answer everything correctly. So to fully enjoy the story (which becomes amazing in the second half of the game), you really do need to get the questioning right. The general rule is if they're twitching they're lying. Check what evidence you have very carefully and if you have something you think you can counter with accuse them of lying. Otherwise stick to the doubting. And of course if they're just sitting there, blinking a bit, stick with the truth.

I love the Wii U.

If they abandon it early I would be super pissed. There's no reason this console can't sell at least as good as the Gamecube...they just need more exclusive AAA games out. And better marketing.

BTW I highly doubt they would abandon it early because they  seem to understand this would kill public confidence in any future machines just like it did with SEGA.

XB1 is less powerful, there's no doubt about that unless you want to believe the desperate murmering of MS executives. PS4 has a gpu which is 50% more powerful which equates to a 25% performance improvement, but the memory setup helps too. That's why you're seeing this resolution gap. It's doubful any multiformat game would look better on xb1 unless they're not doing it right. But if it's 720p for x1 then it mostly puts it in the same resolution league as Wii U.

Any news on Monster Hunter G for the WiiU?  Will you have to pay a monthly fee to play it?  Frankly, I'd love another MH to dig my teeth in (Tri Ultimate sounds too samey), but I surely am not paying for it on a monthly basis.

Actually my mistake. It was for the Badge Pursuit Challenge. I actually was kind of confused about it myself, because when I originally had the game it came with "The Ambassador's Car" as the bonus DLC. This time I had this little packet of film negatives, and DLC codes for Badge Pursuit and The Naked City. It looks like it was part of the original Gamestop preorder bonus. I recently rebought the game, and I think I picked up one of those "never been played before" pre-owned games that Gamestop sells from time to time. Either way it's kind of cool.

Ass Creed 4 Wii U gameplay map

Wii U direct captures:

Nintendolife said:

Yarr, it looks to be a decent Port!

By now, we're used to publishers being coy when it comes to showing off their Wii U versions of multiplatform games. More often than not, we won't actually get to see Wii U-specific footage or screenshots until the day of launch, when the community gets its hands on the game. Silence is deafening, as they say, and when a company withholds this kind of media, it's usually for a good reason: such as their port being something of a stinker.

Thankfully, that doesn't seem to be the case with Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag. Again, Ubisoft have been rather tight-lipped on the whole affair, instead choosing to showcase the PlayStation 4 and PC versions. We've even seen plenty of footage from the now-technically-last-gen consoles. But what of the Wii U version? Is it going to be another sloppy port like Assassin's Creed III was? We wouldn't be so sure.

These screenshots, uploaded by NeoGAF user Bizubani, were taken in-game using the Wii U's Home button, and uploaded via the console's Internet Browser. They show off some neat texture detail, and, seemingly, some impressive anti-aliasing results.

Also of noteworthiness are the file sizes for the different versions of the game. The digital version of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games each take up around 9.6-10GB, whereas the Wii U eShop download sails in at a whopping 14GB. Could this disparity in file size be a case of improved textures in the Wii U version? We're not entirely sure, but nonetheless, it looks like Ubisoft may have been taking this port seriously after all.

DICE: Second screen not a fad Will play a role in studio's future games
battlescreen -
battlescreen -

Second screen technology will not be a short-lived fad, DICE creative director Lars Gustavsson believes, but a mechanic the developer will look to take advantage of in all of its games going forward.

Battlefield 4 screenshot

"I'm really happy with [Battlescreen]," Gustavsson told VideoGamer.com last week, discussing Battlefield 4's second screen functionality. "It shouldn't be a gimmick, it should be something that ties to the game experience. I feel that the second screen, the Battlescreen, to sit on the next-generation consoles, 64 players, being squad leader, being able to order your squad and always having that overview, it really adds to the experience."

And second screen functionality could soon become an integral part of the Battlefield experience, Gustavsson suggests.

"I think so," he says when asked whether the tech will play an even more important role in Battlefield's future. "We've challenged hard to come up with something cool this time around. There are so many thoughts and ideas that we just didn't get around to realising. We can't do everything."

Gustavsson also refers to the roll-out of public wireless networks across cities as being "one area that's super exciting since it brings so many possibilities.

"I totally agree that there are many times [where there is] big hype about new features or this game is going to do this, and sometimes they hold up and deliver and sometimes they don't.

"In this case - it's not up to me to say whether it's going to hit it, it's up to the consumers - but I do feel that if you're into Battlefield and you want the full experience, [second screen] definitely adds to it. For me and for games made at DICE, I don't see this as something that will go away."

Battlefield 4's Battlescreen lets PC and next-generation players use a mobile or tablet device to access Commander Mode, display a detailed map screen and alter their loadouts.
