I wouldn't recommend it. At least not if it's plugged in.
Cost. When I bought my SMS, it was $60 brand new, and it came with two games (Hang-on / Safari Hunt), two controllers, and a lightgun. The cheapest NES console was $100 with no game and only one controller. Also most NES games were around $20-50 new. SMS games were around $10-20 new, and I often found used SMS games for $5 at pawn shops too. I got very lucky as shortly after I bought my SMS, a local toy store was going out of business, and I bought a bunch of SMS games from them for under $10 new. I only had a crappy part-time job at the time, so money was tight, but every payday, I'd run to that store (no car yet) and buy a two or three games. I had no idea if any of them were supposed to be good or not. No magazines reviewed SMS games, so I had to guess. Thankfully, most were awesome. I had collected around 30 SMS games, and I loved all of them, even the crappy ones.

Little off topic, but what did you do at your part time job? I'll ask that of everyone. What was everyone's first job, out of curiosity? I washed cars when I was fifteen. At sixteen, I worked the salad bar at a local steakhouse.
Mine was worse. I worked as a janitor.
At an office? School?
Office building. I worked evenings, four hours per day, M-F. After graduating high school, my company offered me full time employment at a school, which wasn't bad since I was only assigned to clean the classrooms and hallways, but not the restrooms.
