I think it's more their personification of death ala Death. Maybe they're classed as demons, but I thought it was more along the line of gods.

Nevertheless, from now on I'll just assume shinigami means cholera. It'll put Death Note in a whole new light.

Robio is also absent.  We can't have quorum without gg and robio.

I like to think that Yoda, Steel and Iga are having their own private council about how to fix the world, but Robio belongs down here with us mortals.

Shin translates to "new" but it means more than the "brand spanking" meaning Westerners apply to it. It means "new" as in "death, obliteration and rebuilding from the ground up."

Kami (Gami) translates to the general concept of "spirits" of which Gods, Goddesses and Demons belong to.

I know this wasn't what you were discussing, but Tensei means "cycle of rebirth."

So Shin Megami Tensei means "The Goddess of Death and Rebirth."

Shinigami means "Demons of Death."

Okami means "THE God or Goddess" aka Amaterasu. Anything with "O" in front of it pretty much means to regard what ever it preceeds with the utmost respect.

The saddest thing about all this: I had a friend** over last night between 9 and 9:45 to relieve some stress*** so I'm kinda pleasantly worn out and tired this morning...

^Great stuff Leo, thanks for that. So haija here might mean falsely worshipped gods/demons of death, or sometihng to that effect? Which would make sense given that they are just the lackeys of the queen of the dead, but it's the haijas that the lay people are terrified of due to not having seen her (she's stuck down in the nether realm).

Yep. Dick was very tongue in cheek (uh oh!); he was obvioulsy being as nice as possible about it, but their reaction was amusing.
