Video: 'Next-gen' tech shown off by ex-Mafia dev

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/382844/video-next-gen-tech-shown-off-by-ex-mafia-dev/

The medieval RPG is in development at Vavra's new studio Warhorse and utilises a modified version of CryEngine 3, Eurogamer Czech reports (via Eurogamer).

Little else is known about the title, though considering its preojected release window and impressive tech, it could well end up on Sony and Microsoft's next consoles.

Video

How do these next gen graphics look to you? Enough of a jump? I like the lighting and frame rate. Textures are nice and detailed. Looks good, great actually but more of what we already have only better. I think that next gen graphics will impress more in its realistic representation of human characters. Whenever you see MGS or Star Wars, Samaritan etc people look at the faces first and animation.

EDIT: Just watched in HD, that does look pretty damned nice. Lighting is great. Detail too.

EDIT 2: Dev says it was running on a two year old PC.

Next-gen tech is as I have been saying...like buying a new graphics card that's slightly better than your old card.

Did you watch the video. I like how the LOD level of detail doesn't change. In current gen they have closer textures looking better, distant onces blurrier.

Crysis 3 'maxes out consoles', says Crytek CEO, 'not even 1% left':

Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli is so confident that Crysis 3 will be the most technically accomplished game ever released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 that he's offered to wage a technological war against current-gen showstoppers Gears of War and Halo.

"Crysis 3 is absolutely maxing out the consoles," Yerli told VideoGamer.com during a recent press tour of the game. "There is absolutely not even 1% left.

"No game will ever look technically better than Crysis 3 on these consoles, flat out. Most games are not even anywhere near Crysis 2 technically. I'm not talking about art style – art is subjective – but the pure fact of what we have been cramming in with Crysis 2 on Xbox [360] and PlayStation [3], I've yet to see a game do that still today.

He continued:

"Any day I will take a battle against Gears and Halo, whatever, the amount of data we put in and the detail level is far superior. With Crysis 3 we're pushing that to another level, but the PC is just two levels beyond."

Crysis 3, due for release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in February, takes advantage of the latest version of Crytek's engine CryEngine 3, with the PC version making the most of DirectX11 to create "benchmark-setting graphical performance".

The game is so technically impressive, Yerli believes, that the top-end work done on the PC version of the game will rival the graphical capabilities of next-gen consoles.

"That's why we said [two years ago] that Crysis 3 is next-gen ready already," Yerli added. "We did that without knowing the specs [of next-generation consoles], but it's not going to be much more than what we have done so far. And it turns out we were pretty much right."

Yerli's comments suggest that he and his team know all about the capabilities of Microsoft and Sony's next-generation systems. But what exactly is he prepared to let on?

Well, for starters, he thinks that the current high cost of memory and processors means that it's "impossible" for next-gen consoles to make an impact similar to that of the previous generation, and as a result, "the focus of next-gen" is not on graphical horsepower...

And

Rising cost of memory and processors will impact next-gen specs - Crytek :

"Impossible" for next-gen consoles to make same impact as current-gen, Yerli claims.

The high cost of memory and processors will make it "impossible" for next-gen consoles "to have the same kind of impact on the console business" as the previous generation, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli has told VideoGamer.com, before suggesting that next-generation horsepower won't be too dissimilar to the current capabilities of top-end PCs.

When asked what he would like Microsoft and Sony to factor into their next-generation consoles, Yerli stated that more memory would allow developers to do "so many more techniques and tricks".

"As a person who likes to drive technology-meets-game design as art, you can never have enough memory. Ever. Simple as that," Yerli told us. "Memory is the single most important thing that is always going to be underbalanced - I've never seen a console where the memory was the right balance.

"Xbox 360, underbalanced. PlayStation 3, underbalanced. Simply because memory is the most expensive part, hence I wish there would be cheaper ways of doing memory so that memory doesn't become an issue anymore.

"If they find ways to cheapen the cost to a degree they could triple or quadruple their memory. Just say, 'Hey we're going to have 32 gigs of memory'. That would be quite amazing because memory can do so many more techniques and tricks."

Triple or quadruple the amount of RAM to 32GBs? Could that be a hint as to what to expect from next-generation consoles? Both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 only carry 512MB of RAM, with the latter split equally between system and video resources.

But given the added costs and the industry's transition towards the free-to-play market, Yerlie says that "the focus of next-gen is in a different area" besides graphical horsepower.

"The current generation consoles, when they launched, were far ahead compared to PC," Yerli continued. "But PC has caught up. With current generation consoles and what's on the horizon – new ones – due to the fact that the cost of CPU and memory are so much more expensive than they were in the past, it is simply impossible to have the same kind of impact on the console business; to be so far ahead of PC.

"That was our guess already two years ago. That's why we said back then that Crysis 3 is next-gen ready already. We did that without knowing the specs, but it's not going to be much more than what we have done so far. And it turns out we were pretty much right. But the focus of next-gen is in a different area.

"The world has changed because there's so much more free content now that the AAA market is losing business, and the AAA market has to reclaim that business or they'll have to move to free-to-play too."

Yerli is confident that Crytek's next-game will take full advantage of the current consoles, though. In the same interview, Yerli revealed that "not even 1%" of the consoles' power had remained untouched for Crysis 3.

Hmmmmmm:

(The game is so technically impressive, Yerli believes, that the top-end work done on the PC version of the game will rival the graphical capabilities of next-gen consoles. "That's why we said [two years ago] that Crysis 3 is next-gen ready already," Yerli added. "We did that without knowing the specs [of next-generation consoles], but it's not going to be much more than what we have done so far. And it turns out we were pretty much right.")

So next gen is going to look like Crysis 3 but not more than that? And he talks about memory being the thing he would beef up? He wants quadruple the memory of 360 PS3 and then says he wants 32gb?! Quadruple 360 and PS3 memory is 2gb like Wii U has.

Maybe Yerli knows what memory PS4 and Next box will have and that is what he is relating this statement to:

"If they find ways to cheapen the cost to a degree they could triple or quadruple their memory. Just say, 'Hey we're going to have 32 gigs of memory'. That would be quite amazing because memory can do so many more techniques and tricks."

  • So 32 divided by 4 = 8gb
  • 32 divided by 3 = 10.6 gb

Sounds unfeasible. I think the rumours peg PS4 memory at 2-4gb and Nextbox at 4-8gb.

8 GB of RAM on the 720 and PS4 will be pretty sweet. Crysis 2 look excellent on the 360 so I'm very much looking forward to seeing how good Crysis 3 will look. Grinning

I really, really doubt PS4 will have more than 4 gbs given what we've heard. Nextbox may have 6-8gb.

Now they tell it's sold out after selling it to me, I can cancel but would lose 5 dollars. They don't when they will have more to ship WTF!!! Now I remember why I stopped buying stuff from  Amazon FUCK THEM.
