So why do you guys have different handles that your usual gamespot/vgpress username?

IS THIS THE PS4 CONTROLLER?

Sony patented a "break apart" PS3 controller in 2008 but it never materialised; now Sony's doing similar - only this time with added bells and whistles.

The obvious speculation is whether this is what Sony's planning for PS4. (No! Bring back the tacky banana pad!)

The patent titled Hybrid Separable Motion Controller was filed in May last year and published 13th November this year.

Oh whoops I've been sick again, although, you know, those extended grips may be needed for a break apart pad.

The most arresting part of the new design are the PlayStation Move-like bobbles on each shoulder of the pad. Otherwise the controller looks more or less identical to the DualShock 3 PS3 pad.

Each half of the controller can also feature motion-sensing technology like a gyroscope, accelerometer and magnetometer. That's on top of rumble, a speaker (apparently) and analogue stick/button inputs.

One set of pictures shows extended palm grips that more closely resemble the length of the Move controller than the DualShock 3 controller. The patent noted that a contoured and textured surface may be used to help grip the damn things and not fling them at your telly/friends. There's another hideous picture that showed wrist straps at the bottom of each half of the controller.

Most of the patent concerned the technology that would enable the pad to be broken apart and refitted, and ensure the linked console knew what the hell was going on. The actual practical gaming applications aren't really discussed in detail, but you can imagine what they might be.

In this patent's case, the pictures do the talking (via TheSixthAxis)

Functionally it should be pretty good, but it's U-G-L-Y.

I would take a 9 axis motionplus remote with that new PNI sensor in it over this.

I'm curious at the cost, if rare is doing a next gen kinect game it means Kinect may be a pack in, how much is that costing MS? If a move controller and camera is packed in, how much will that cost Sony?

If Wii U is $350, how much do you think the other consoles will cost and how much of a loss do you think they will eat per console sold?

So the U pad is $100, refined kinect or move would likely cost half that. But then the extra CPU GPU etc tech on top?

In a new nine-minute video, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata discussed Animal Crossing: New Leaf shipments and shortages, as well as a special ROM card the game uses.

New Leaf has been seeing widespread sell-outs across Japan. While it’s been fairly successful on the eShop, it has sold tremendously at retail. Shops haven’t been able to keep up with demand.

Read on below for an update on Animal Crossing: New Leaf’s production. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem as though Nintendo will be able to alleviate the shipment situation anytime soon.

- Iwata apologies for New Leaf shortages

- The game saves more items and swapped villages, houses with a special type of ROM card with SLC-NAND to store such big save data

- NAND is flash memory, as used in SD cards, USB key drives, SSDs

- SLC-NAND is durable and has large area for volume

- MLC-NAND sacrifices durability for greater data density

- Supplies for SLC-NAND, controller chip were within estimates

- Sales greatly exceeded estimates

- Replenishing supplies will take several months, won’t be resolved soon

- Nintendo is adjusting production volume allocation between Animal Crossing and other SLC-NAND games, but not giving AC a production monopoly

- Iwata reminds consumers that the game can be downloaded on the eShop

- There are download cards at retail which may sell out, but there will be plentiful resupplies for year-end

- It’s possible to buy download codes online

- Limited-time downloadable presents and Seven-Eleven-exclusive presents will be redistributed at a later date

Wow, hope this won't impact the western launch.

My Wii name is the same as my Xbox name.

I'm trying to keep them all the same, and that's a name nobody else ever seems to take. Edgecrusher is pretty common so I never bother. Its a Fear Factory song:

My NNID is the same as my Steam, PSN, and GOG account. I wanted to keep them all the same.

I started using that name after GS and after I joined this site.

I first used it for Steam because I figured Nintendo_Ownes7 or Nintyfan17 couldn't work on Steam.

I was playing Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and my favorite characters starting class was Halberdier so I used that and my favorite number is 17.

SUPER MARIO MAKER LEVELS:

  • SMB Mix-Up! (1AB2-0000-0047-5A7D)
  • Storm the Castle (77BD-0000-00E0-A9C0)

Okay, just tried out mario galaxy 2 and metroid prime 3 on u. The upscaling is horrible, massive jaggies. I got a better picture using wii on component cables using my tvs upscaling. Word of warning, test it before you make the transfer, there are no backsies. I'm sticking with sdtvs for sd consoles.

Wii used to have that nickname feature, now i can't remember who's who with all your aliases. I'm enjoying nintendo land more now i have tried multiplayer. Looks complicated and boring in videos but is clever yet simple and super fun. With multiplayer i can see the real benefit of two screens. Not so much in single based on NLand. I hate it when they make you use the u pad screen when you have a much better picture on the hdtv. But its great for offscreen play and multiplayer. Mario, zelda and Animal crossing has awesome graphics. I'm not worried at all about this systems graphics now. Some of the shaders are really accomplished and it's very vibrant and crisp.

Trying to download 2gb of trine 2 directors cut at a relatives house, with 1mbps internet. Not the greatest idea in the world. Guys go to eurogamer read the wii u latency story, explains the colour loss on the u pad screen. It runs at 78mbps faster that wi fi can do. Very good top of the line tech. Not sure if could do hd for realtime streaming given the massive data transfer and latency requirements. Video would be possible i guess. I know some guys only value graphics on screen as measurable tech improvement, but this is good, pioneering stuff.

They could have made nintendoland better, you can see there is scope for better in zelda and metroid because the base is there but they limit things for casuals. On rails zelda for instance. That donkey kong game is a nice tablet style game. The hdtv view is completely useless though imo. Falcons race is a pointless POS. Yoshi kart is fun for 2 minutes and it must have taken an hour to make. Shame 3 of the best games are multiplayer only. I could see that luigis mansion game fleshed out. Game should have been online, I see that now. On mario chase try diving into the mud, the effect looks great. Also that yoshi kart model i can imagine in that toy level in smg, would look amazing. Btw, once you activate a jukebox tune in the plaza how do u de-activate it and go back to the normal music

Just think Nintendoland online, we could all play ! That would be fun, short sighted once again..They better start supporting and making online streamlined, because this shit is disappointing.

What? That u pad Nyko battery works in conjunction with the existing u pad battery for double the power. It's not twice the capacity replacing the existing battery, it's about the same as the existing battery strapped on top of it. So with both batteries you get Twice the battery life. Clever PR wording but its not some great high capacity battery.
