1UP's Epic Mickey 2 Wii U review claims that the Wii Remote/Nunchuck can only used in two-player games; the Upad is required for single player. WTF?

That was the original info in the first hands on, but then in an interview Spector said player 1 could use the wii remote. So I'm confused and wondering if the reviewer missed the option? According to Spector player 1 defaults controls use the U pad but you can switch to the wii remote so I guess we will have to check other reviews and/or GAF to see what the real deal is.

EDIT:

Here is the article before, seems it was overly positive on the translation, the referal site I mean. Here it's not quite clear if he is specifying single player support. The 1up review says it has a sometimes crippling frame rate and we know the U version has only had 6 months in the oven. Might not be much reason to get it if there is no single player IR.

I'm very selective when it comes to Ubisoft as they don't really put out that much that interests me. Pretty much all I get from them these days is Assassin's Creed. I like Splinter Cell although I haven't picked one up in the last few games, will probably get Blacklist. I don't know why but Zombi U never peaked my interest at all.

Nice Sonic Racing reviews. I really enjoyed the first one so I'll likely get this one too.

I still wouldn't put too much stock in a Gamespot review these days. More and more they seem to go out of their way to give anticipated games wildly different scores than the norm (giving RE6 a 4.5 and Fable:The Journey an 8 ). I've just heard way too many people gush about the game (early previewers and Gamestop managers who played it) to believe that the game is that bad.  I'll accept that Zombie U may be a love it/hate it kind of game, but GS' opinion in the matter shouldn't even be factored in these days.

I watched it, and remain unconvinced. You can edit a video review to show whatever you want to back up your story.  Like I said, GS just isn't a credible source for reviews anymore. I'm not ready to defend the game mind you, just that I really don't think you should make a judgement of a game based on anything they do. I'm sure several more reviews will pop up in the next day or two though and you can still make a sound judgement.

Reading some Epic Mickey 2 reviews, seems these guys were all playing the 360/PS3 versions when Wii 1 was the lead sku.

EDGE mag said:

How disappointing, then, that Junction Point should steer this sequel into gentler waters, all while making the same mistakes as last time. The camera might not be quite as wayward as in the Wii game, but it remains a bitter irony that a game developed in collaboration with the world’s most famous animation house should have such issues framing its action effectively. An unreliable double-jump hardly helps matters, contributing to a persistent feeling that exploration is more laborious than it really should be.

That’s every bit as sluggish and awkward as it sounds, exacerbated by the constant need to refill your paint meter; the same goes for spraying larger enemies to pacify them. It’s less problematic if you’re using Move: Sony’s wand makes for a fine surrogate Remote, being quicker and more precise than a right analogue stick, most noticeably during the occasional boss battle where speed is of the essence.

The Power Of Two may have fewer technical issues than its predecessor, but it’s a less adventurous, less courageous.

Funny 1up says the game is techically flawed, Edge says it's less technically flawed than EM1 which I was okay with.

Gamespot said:

Oswald is a terrible companion, and his uneven implementation is symptomatic of the amateurish mechanics that infect this adventure.

Jumping, the most important element of a platformer, is a clumsy mess that clashes with the cartoony charm the game exudes. A troublesome camera is the most immediate culprit. Unlike in the original Epic Mickey, your view is rarely obstructed by parts of the environment, but that doesn't alleviate the problems. Distorted perspectives make lining up long-distance leaps troublesome, so you're left guessing how far away you actually are, and often plummet unceremoniously to your death. More problematic is that it's difficult to know what surfaces are safe for you to stand on and which will spit you right off. It's all too common to slide right off a seemingly level expanse, while other times you may stand in thin air, not making contact with anything other than clear oxygen. Jumping in The Power of Two is an unpredictable and often frustrating ordeal.

Tedious objectives ensure that even if you can stomach the core flaws that populate this game, it's still difficult to derive any enjoyment from your activities.

It's disappointing that so many of the same problems that haunted the original Epic Mickey are present in the sequel.

This review reads like the ones who had a problem with the first. I was okay with the 'tedious' objectives and camera of the first but the distorted perspectives and surfaces which look flat but spin you right off sounds like bunk.

Gamesradar said:

Fleeting moments of enjoyment, as well as occasionally beautiful vistas, are found once you do arrive at your destination. Though Wasteland might not be as whimsical and unique as it was in the past, there are still some remarkable set pieces--from massive rainbow waterfalls to riverboats stuck in whirlpools. 2D platforming segments, too, are visually interesting, filled with details and references that'll make the child in you beam. It's a shame, though, that once you've found these remarkable sights that there's not that much interesting to do with them.

This leads to occasionally interesting co-op mechanics that have each character using their own tools to complete an objective--a task aided by the fact that the camera has been improved upon.

Some segments are borderline unplayable with an AI-controlled Oswald. When attempting to progress through areas he'll run uselessly into walls instead of hitting switches, and when trying to take on a massive boss he'll tailgate Mickey instead of running distraction like he's very obviously supposed to do.

Oswald's AI swings wildly between competent and absolutely unforgivable, making an already middling experience significantly worse.

Whereas the original’s novelty kept it interesting enough for fans to justify overlooking the flaws, the sequel carries with it no such charm. Instead, Power of Two is both less whimsical and more flawed

Now this is sad, more flawed and less whimsical, crushingly terrible AI? Sounds worse than the first now.

IGN said:

It fails to get some very basic features right. While simplistic minute-to-minute gameplay is forgivable Mickey’s central objectives eventually grow repetitive and tiresome. The slog of reviving dead machines over the course of 20 hours is exacerbated by audio cues that remind you of your task-at-hand in a never-ending loop.

Perhaps most frustrating in the list of the game’s missteps is the return of that wonky camera that so plagued the original. The player can manually manipulate Epic Mickey 2’s camera, but it always wants to return to a position that sits too low. This is chiefly problematic when trying to pull focus in battle, and bosses, who loom over Mickey and Oswald, take a particularly long time to defeat. The problem is worsened when combined with Epic Mickey 2’s slippery surfaces; trying to judge distances in more delicate platforming sections often leads to wild leaps of faith and untimely death.

As a split-screen game, Epic Mickey 2 is kicked into life, opening itself up to much more intuitive exploration. Oswald is a satisfying character to control, too, his ear-propeller skill versatile in frequently vertical level design.

The game still delivers on the charm and occasionally hits some truly inspired highs, but fundamental issues hold it back from ever getting within sight of its goals.

If you’re a Disney fan, there’s still much joy to be gleaned out of Epic Mickey 2

Hmm, wonky camera returns? I had no problem with the camera of the first game bearing in mind I got through the N64 era. Repitition sounds about the same as the first. AI still sounds horrible for Oswald.

Ehh, I can hope (but not much) that the lead sku is better but no one is reviewing the lead sku. I'll see what GAF says but this game is on the get it when very cheap list now. And I still want clarification if player 1 can use the wii remote on U.

Well we have 3 reviews so far:

  • 9.2
  • 7/10
  • 4.5

Last one sounds harsh?

A 4.5....I find it hard to believe its that bad considering all the praise its been getting. Looks pretty awesome to me, its still my #1 wanted launch game.

So you guys ready, this is the final day. Kiss your Wii's goodnight as its the last day you will care for it. A new system launch is here... and I dont feel much of anything. I want to experience the launch, to me that is the fun part, which I wont get to do. Sad . But actually looking forward to playing it, yeah it should be cool but nothing really screams out amazing.

Also there is no where near the excitement level of the wii. There is no sense of magic of the unknown potential the wiimote brought. That wow factor that happened when someone saw the wii in action. This hardware just isnt as interesting. Everyone knows what a touch pad is, it is nothing new.

Fuck the Wii...I got rid of that prick a LONG time ago.

Meh, to me the Wii was the worst system Nintendo ever made. It had a cool controller sure, but they also missed out on 6 years of 3rd-party multi-platform AAA games, and most of the adult-oriented market because they decided to skimp out on modern technology. I'm much more excited for Wii U, because it looks like what the original Wii SHOULD have been in the 1st place.

  • Solid, modern hardware? Check.
  • Wii remote support? Check.
  • A real controller that's just as good as anyone else's? Check.
  • A badass touch screen pad? Check.
  • Solid 3rd-party support and day 1 adult-oriented games? Check.

So far this system is covering all bases...the way it should be for any system. Its off to a much better start than the Wii was hardware and software speaking. Will it sell as good as the Wii? Probably not until they drop the price at the very least. But who cares as long as it sells enough.

And I have to agree with Vader, the excitement for the Wii U isn't quite there, although I have a feeling this is how it's just going to be from now on. There's so much more information coming out these days that I think the days of the "huge event" in gaming is just over. We know too much these days and we know about it way too far in advance. Oh well still looking forward to playing it.

I agree with that....I think its just got a lot to do with where technology is now as well. The days of getting a new console and just having it be this huge jump in every way are OVER...whether its a Nintendo console, a new Xbox, whatever it is. This is why the Xbox 360 has been on the market since fucking 2005 people. And its why its still able to come out with games like Halo 4 that look impressive.

There will never be another Dreamcast or whatever that comes out & just looks 3 times better than anything before it.

^ The next HD system launches will be big events. it is just that this is Nintendo catching up to everyone else, it isnt NEW in that sense. When we see something totally new, upgrades in the way the games look then people will get excited. Plus who knows what MS will have in store.

That's what I'm talking about. I don't think they will be....but I think people are assuming they will be. And I don't think the tech Nintendo is using is going to be all that far behind the others to make a huge difference either. At least not for a good 3 years when people start scraping the bottoms of the hardware.

Destructoid, do they only give like 2.0's or 9.5's in their reviews or something? What was the RE6 score?

Epic Mickey 2 Wii review from Nintendo Everything said:

(It evokes) the feeling while going to theme parks or exploring new places, and that in an of itself will make this experience worth it for many people. Dare I say it has a bit of nostalgia, despite the fact that it’s a new game.

Still, gamers who care not for “feelings” and “magic” will perhaps find nothing redeeming about Epic Mickey 2. Unfortunate as it is, Junction Point dropped a ball that has the potential to become an extraordinary game series. I have my fingers crossed for a third entry.

The bottom line…?

Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two is a wonderful, but deeply flawed game. Its issues are solely technical, but for the gamer who vests his or her interest in things like gameplay and high-production values, I’d recommend you look elsewhere.

Buy this game if…

You’re hankering for a clunky, but otherwise decent exploration platformer.

Don’t buy this game if…

You don’t care for magic, “feel”, or atmosphere.

Interesting.

Just watching the Gametrailers review, there was a part where they tried to jump on a completely flat card and the game shunted them off. Then they had to grab oswalds legs and the game shunted them off into oblivion. Also from the video it looks painful to aim without IR so I wont be touching any version without it. They also say the AI of Oswald is horrendous.

Now watching GTs Power of Illusion review, stylus slow things down too much, slow mechanics, too much backtracking.

Watching GSs Zombi U review.

The flaw is tedious melee combat? Are they missing the point of this game? It's supposed to be slow bludgeoning. Wait it sounds like he crippled himself by choosing to stash weapons away instead of using them. He chooses to play the game with the cricket bat alone and then complains that he has to use the cricket bat alone? Funny, his impressions of the pad use contradict much of what we've already heard. Sounds like he would just rather use a traditional controller. Then he talks about the multiplayer and enjoys it because it has lots of action and ammo, says the game could have been a "good action game" but it's not trying to be an action game is it?

I'm not saying he's wrong about anything, if someone doesn't know what they are letting themselves in for - the game looks tough, different somewhat obtuse and the antithesis of a action zombi shooter. I can see them not liking it. Hell I can see myself not liking it but I'm willing to give it a go. Depends on more reviews.

EDIT:

Someone is saying that Gamesmaster gave it a 97 out of 100 score?

Also EDGE mag impressions:

"I got my copy in the post this morning. Basically, they praise the atmosphere, and the tension that the permadeath mechanic adds. They make the comparison to Dark Souls and say how good the 'survival' aspect of the game is. They really like the gamepad stuff too.

On the downside, they say that the endgame is a bit disappointing (gets a bit fetch-questy, apparently) and some of the later enemies start wearing body armour/running/exploding on contact, and can push the difficulty level slightly into unfair territory.

Pretty positive review all round though, and sounds like they really enjoyed the game."

I'm torn on which version of Epic Mickey 2 to get tomorrow. I have the PS3 version pre-ordered, and love the HD visuals, but I don't want to buy Move just to play it properly. The DS3 controller worked fine in the demo, but after replaying the original Epic Mickey on Wii this week, there's a huge benefit in using the IR pointer. Also, the Wii version is cheaper at only $40 instead of $50. Damn . . . .

Bear you should just wait on the Wii U until the big games hit. You've seemed like you've been going back and forth on it for awhile now, if you feel that way I wouldn't bother. Especially if you don't care for Zombi U...that's the whole point of the launch in my opnion. All the other games I want are multi-platform. Sure I want Nintendoland and Mario Bros but I wouldn't buy it just for those.
