Did you try Bastion yet?
It sounds like its either a very young kid, or somebody just trying to act like a total idiot as a joke.
Right, there's definitely more competition, but he makes the point of trying to spin it in a way that it sounds like he's trying to tell people "this game is inferior" to the competition, and it only did well because it was on a console with no competition. Instead of saying "despite being a high quality game on the level of the competition, it may have a hard time finding an audience".
Its all in the way some of these assholes word things, like they're trying to subtlety influence what THEY want, or believe, that annoys the fuck out of me these days.
Why would you not play it? I thought you played pretty much everything?
Fun? Sure. Excellent? No way. In the same way a burger with all the cholesterol in the world is tasty but not exactly top quality food. It's just a very, very few hours of mowing down dumb as bricks crowds with cool explosions and shit happening every so often and a bunch of on-rails parts on top of some of the dumbest plot this side of Hollywood (which Bond also fits into but at least has a certain charm being Bond and all). There's really not much gameplay to it and it got old after Modern Warfare (if not Call of Duty 2 really, but at least the modern theme gave it some novelty compared to that) with every other COD being a sad rehash of that and even reusing the same "oh no I'm falling catch me" scenes among others.
If you don't want an FPS that has the same modern controls and style as COD yet allows a little more freedom in how you play with different routes, stealth vs action, destroyable cover and actual AI then that's up to you obviously but it doesn't mean anything bad about the game at all, even if it doesn't have as high production values as the games you mention. I guess if you're heavy on multiplayer COD is the way to go (well, if you're in that sort of thing, personally I'll just get BF3 on PC as COD is essentially Counter-Strike on steroids and I've played that more than enough by now), in order to have the latest and supposedly greatest and thus be part of the main player base, but buying COD for the limited single player would just be plain stupid.
Anyway. So you aren't feeling it. How is that even an argument against what they were discussing there? You not caring about it doesn't invalidate arguments against shitty, obviously ignorant and biased games journalism that devolves into making shit up about games they don't know shit about, even though it's their job to. If some writer treated an existing COD game the same it wouldn't be alright just because I don't care about COD.

The COD campaigns are very playable in a minute-to-minute way but the overall single-player experience is disjointed. It's just a series of vignettes attached to each other. In my FPS campaigns I like a bit of a feeling that there is a reason as to why I'm mowing down all these enemies.
Meh. I still think the campaigns are excellent. I find them intense with no filler. The AI may not be the smartest from the bunch but they're certainly not dumb as bricks.
No Edge I don't play everything, not even close. There's plenty of games that I haven't played way too many to even begin to name.Did Black Ops have the endless spawning enemies or have they dropped that?
also,
"The Good Old Games Summer Hidden Gems event ends today with Independence War Deluxe. Today only, those with dreams of dabbling in both space combat and starship management can snag the game for $2.39."
Black Ops didn't change anything about the COD formula as far as I could tell, but I didn't finish it and promptly uninstalled it from my PC. Maybe they didn't respawn as much so you could more often actually clear areas before moving on rather than be forced to move to the next event trigger but as they still had the same dumb and 100% scripted behaviour the gameplay was the exact same as other COD games in the end. You can't exactly choose how best to tackle a given situation, you can't circle around the back to take enemies by surprise, you just do as you're forced. Maybe it has some instances where it fakes stealth approaches like that Modern Warfare 2 level in the snow but I doubt later levels improve in general. Go from A to B, wait for comrades to open doors, bullet time boss kill, on rails vehicle/mounted gun segments, etc. The point is still to move from trigger to trigger with dumb crowds inbetween. Basically, what people bashed Homefront's single player for I see in every COD. Just with higher production values but that's not what makes gameplay.

The problem wasn't them feeling it's inferior, the problem was ignorance, prejudice, and making shit up.
Wii after all has all the recent COD games except MW2. Not that if it didn't their shit would make sense.

This is why I say Goldeneye blows COD away, the single-player game has the same kind of cinematic approach of the COD games but the gameplay is much deeper and much better designed. I didn't play much of the multi-player, but it seemed fun though no doubt COD is the way to go there because its designed to be mainly a multi-player game, whereas Goldeneye was designed to be more of a campaign based game.
Agreed.
You really should check the game out at some point, I guarantee you'd like it.
Black Ops is pretty much a carbon copy of the Modern Warfare games in its setup and gameplay.
Ah okay. That's not so bad.
I never finished the original Goldeneye.
It's worth playing, certainly. There are only two bad levels, one snowy one (which was clearly a multiplayer map) and the last absolutely stupid level which had you walking around on platforms that you can't really see (FP-Platforming ACK!).
