CVG said:

You've probably read our Kinect review - but now the device has launched in the UK, it's a good time to recap what the rest of the critics think.

Looking at the single game reviews on CVG, Kinect Joyride received a 5.3, Kinect Adventures got a 6.3 and Kinect Sports got a respectable 7.9.

The wider web also reviewed software and hardware. Here's what they had to say...

Kinect hardware

  • TechRadar - 3.5/5: "We like Kinect a lot. But it's not a perfect product by any means, and many hardcore gamers out there are going to be disappointed by it."
  • Gizmodo - No score: "Right now, the answer to the fundamental question of "are you having fun with Kinect" is, unfortunately, "not really." Unless you like dance games. The potential is there, but you need to think of Kinect like the launch of a new console".
  • Engadget - No Score: "The Kinect as hardware is great, but there's plenty of room for software engineers and UI designers to improve. And speaking of room, if you're worried about cramped space, you might want to get a measuring tape before shelling out $149."
  • Joystiq - No score: "For now -- to a novelty peripheral that is in no way geared towards the day-one buyer or "core" gamer. Microsoft conceived a potential game-changer with Project Natal, it just seems like Kinect was born prematurely."
  • Shacknews - No Score: "Kinect lands a solid hit with the tech but its real-world practicality remains in question to me. All of the current games are intended to be use in a full-size recommended play space. That will require special setup for many."
  • Cnet: 4/5: "Kinect won't cater to the hard-core gaming market -- it's just not accurate enough. But it's rollicking great fun. Exhausting and ridiculous, you're guaranteed a giggle if you get the kids involved or set it up at your next party."
  • IGN - 7.5: At $149.99, a motion-tracking camera add-on for the Xbox 360 is a tough sell, especially considering that the entry level variation of the Xbox 360 itself is only $199.99. It may sell very well to families and casual players, but for more traditional players, the cost of admission may be too steep."
  • Eurogamer - No Score: "Kinect will get better with time and its defining games are still to come. Here's hoping Microsoft and its partners can rise to the challenge of this new form of gaming better than most have with the Wii. Kinect deserves it."
  • Kotaku - No score: "It's not even a sure thing as a games platform, not until it has its first great game. But it doesn't have to be. If Kinect becomes nothing more than a replacement for the TV remote, it'll prove to be a winner. For its launch price, though, it needs to be more."

Kinect Sports

  • Joystic - 4/5: "Rare's work on Kinect Sports really demonstrates what the camera is capable when it's used by a capable developer. If you've already got the hardware to play it on, consider Kinect Sports a must-have."
  • Gamespot - 7.5: "This motion-controlled sports collection doesn't do much for solo players, but it's fun to play with friends both locally and online."
  • Destructoid - 6.5: "It's definitely a more well-rounded package than something like Wii Sports. But ultimately, there aren't enough fresh ideas here to vindicate it as the new king of motion-controlled sports mini games."
  • IGN - 8.0: "As an example of what Kinect can do, and as a point of entry for gamers and casuals alike, Kinect Sports delivers an easily accessible but surprisingly nuanced game...there are some stumbling points here and there"
  • NowGamer - 6.4: While party titles will come and go, as it stands, Kinect Sports does nothing for assailing our fears that Kinect can't do 'Core'."
  • EuroGamer: 7.0: "As a demonstration of the tech, it offers fleeting glimpses rather than a comprehensive examination of the potential of controller-free gameplay...as a lively, funny, polished and varied genre title that will slap a smile on the face of the most jaded cynic, Kinect Sports does its job admirably."

Kinect Adventures

  • NowGamer - 7.0: "A limited amount of content doesn't defer from the fun that can be had trying out Kinect."
  • EuroGamer - 6.0: "Within a couple of weeks it will be gathering dust: another brave bundled game, first up out of the trenches, first to fall."
  • Kotaku - No score: "laying a game with nothing in your hands takes a bit of getting used to but Kinect Adventures manages to both ease you into that experience and make the learning curve fun"
  • IGN - 6.5: "I'd recommend playing around with Kinect Adventures for a while, but definitely go out and pick up another game, because the fun won't last long."

Kinectimals

  • Gamespot - 7.5: "The minigames are shallow and repetitive, but Kinectimals is too lovable to stay mad at for long."
  • Joystiq - 4/5: "Kinectimals breaks the spell of owning a digital animal by occasionally being too "gamey.""
  • IGN - 7.0: "It's a Kinect game that is probably worth picking up if you've got youngsters, but it's not the immersive family experience it should have been."
  • EuroGamer - 7.0: "Of all the Kinect launch titles, this is perhaps the one with the most actual substance. Hopefully it's but a hint of things to come."

Kinect Joy Ride

  • EuroGamer - 5.0: "It's a bland cartoon racer with an easily exhaustible gimmick. It's fun for a while, but by no stretch of the imagination is it worth £35."
  • NowGamer - 7.0: "Lacks the tight controls that a cart racer needs, but is nonetheless a great showcase."
  • IGN - 6.0: "This is not an unplayable game by any stretch of the imagination, but, Kinect Joy Ride isn't as tight as it needs to be."
  • Joystiq - 2.5: "If there wasn't a decent racer attached to the gimmick, I wouldn't recommend it at all."

Dance Central

  • EuroGamer - 8.0: "Dance Central will show you a really good time."
  • Joystiq - 4/5: "Dance Central is undoubtedly one of the strongest games in the Kinect's launch lineup, but it's hard to ignore the untapped potential awaiting the franchise. Ultimately, Dance Central's greatest shortcoming is that it can't actually teach you how to dance."
  • IGN - 8.0: "Dance Central is great fun, it gets you moving, and it's absolutely perfect for parties. Although it's disappointing to see so few features and unlocks included"
  • Destructoid - 8.0: "There's room for improvement in terms of what the game offers, but Harmonix nailed the core experience, and that goes a long way towards making it one of the most compelling Kinect launch titles."
  • 1UP - A-: "Honestly, it's hard to pinpoint a significant problem with Dance Central. The selection of jams, from Pitbull's "Calle Ocho" to M.I.A.'s "Galang '05", are all bootie-bouncing material"

Your Shape

  • Joystiq - 3/5: "Your Shape Fitness Evolved won't replace your gym membership or motivate those who aren't already fitness-inclined, but for those looking to mix up their current routine or supplement their workout regimen, it may do the trick"
  • Destructoid - 8.0: "If you have the space and the inclination for getting a decent workout in your living room, Your Shape: Fitness Evolved delivers."

Microsoft expects to sell five million Kinect units this Christmas, up from its previous forecast of three million. Will you be picking one up?

GAF guy has the PS3 version of Black Ops and it's not good news?

Got up early .. sitting in my bed reading the GAF impressions of this game and felt compelled to post. This game is not as good as MW2. Not even close, in my opinion.

First of all, purely from a technical standpoint (on PS3 at least) it pales in comparison. I played for about 3 hours last night w/ Denog and the_prime_mover... I had a good time (rented the game) but the game definitely feels like b-team material to me. Framerate is sub-par for a series that is known for 60fps. I thought this was due to lag, but I didn't play a single game last night that didn't suffer from noticeable dips in framerate. Don't get me started on the graphics. Maybe I am just becoming one of those graphics elitists (don't think so because MW2 is hardly top-tier material and it looks good to me) but the graphics on PS3 are poor. The textures are poor. The resolution is standard definition material, imo. The alpha effects, particles .. everything ... lack definition .. lack sharpness .. lack any visual impact. The game looks like mud. Treyarch even forces the game into 1080p ... perhaps to mask the low resolution? A lot of the maps feel like they blend together. The color models are all basically the same, and the design is clearly a step back from MW2 and COD 4. There is nothing memorable about any of the maps, they are all fairly generic. The only map that remotely stood out as the one with the rocket taking off .... pretty neat.

The game, for me, is lacking that "it" factor that make the IW COD's so special. Treyarch simply doesn't have what IW has. I appreciate that this game feels more 'balanced', but in their attempt to make the series slower and balanced, I feel that it lost some of its appeal. Even with annoying as the OMAers and noob tubes and commando pros are in MW2, the game was AAA material. You felt it in the map design, in the way the guns played ... the way maps flowed .... it's 6:21 am ... I probably don't sound very coherent, but I'm saddened that IW is done with this franchise. Treyarch just doesn't and probably will never have the special something that made the IW games so special. I will play the game and enjoy it for what it is, but I'm very surprised by the amount of praise the game is getting. Maybe it's my platform of choice .....

Kudo in London. How did he get past security without being checked for contraband?

And this was at a night launch and he was still wearing sunglasses.

This map is decently recreated, I played it a bit on PC. You can still see they got lazy porting it though, the lighting is all wrong. He jumps in a hut at one point and it's all dark inside yet the table and chair are brightly lit up.

Wtf, of all the games to turn into online grindfests...

Black Ops.

So someone tell me why it takes Treyarch the entire game to get the last level at a stable frame rate and looking good with nice lighting and effects? The last f******* level!

Then, whose genuis idea was it to cover the entire level in inpenetrable smoke? That guy needs a beat down.

So I finally complete this POS, then the game freezes for the 3rd time on the final cutscene of the game just as the plot is being resolved. I have to power down the wii by holding down the red button. I restart and the game has saved the checkpoint pre-tank before the yellow haze rains down. I am not going through all that again just to have the game freeze on me again.

Mother**** I will check the ending on youtube.

I am returning this game.

Reading GAF, the PC, PS3 and Wii versions of Black Ops all have buggy problems or lower/bad performance.

Nintendo Files Official Trademark for Catchphrase ‘It’s On Like Donkey Kong’

PR email said:

In honor of the upcoming Nov. 21 launch of Donkey Kong Country™ Returns for the Wii™ console, Nintendo has filed a request with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to trademark the pop-culture phrase “It’s on like Donkey Kong.” For those unfamiliar with the term, “It’s on like Donkey Kong” is an old, popular Nintendo phrase that has a number of possible interpretations depending on how it’s used. In addition to Nintendo’s use, it has been used in popular music, television and film over the years, pointing to Donkey Kong’s status as an enduring pop-culture icon and video game superstar.

Donkey Kong™ is one of the oldest and most recognizable video game characters. He has been a pop-culture icon since the launch of his 1981 self-titled arcade game. Donkey Kong again rose to prominence in the 1994 Super NES™ game Donkey Kong Country. His new game, Donkey Kong Country Returns, marks his triumphant return in a new side-scrolling adventure with new challenges amid a beautiful setting. The game features the first simultaneous cooperative game-play mode for the series, with one player controlling Donkey Kong and the other controlling his agile pal, Diddy Kong™.

On Nov. 21, It’s on like Donkey Kong™!

The more I play Black Ops, the less I like it. Discussing it on the technical level (Wii) this is worse than REFLEX, I feel like my initial judgement of it looking about the same or worse than WaW feels true. I am at the end of the second snow level and I have encountered far too many frame rate problems in the game as a whole. Reflex is much smoother. And it's not always in places where there is a lot of stuff going on, there were occasions where I was in a room with two other characters just standing about and the frame rate was slow. From what I saw on 1up, there are some frame rate hiccups at the same point in the HD version too (vietnam trench level), so it's most likely shoddy code.

And in similarly sized environments as WaW, here the frame rate chugged. This game is really visually inconsistent for me, it feels like it looks great on occasion, good sometimes, average most of the time and abysmal occasionally. Having the game crash twice on one particular level doesn't help either.

Now discussing the single player in terms of the design which is the same as the HD versions, I just don't like it. The campaign doesn't feel cohesive, it feels sort of off to me. In WaW or COD4 you were with your team and levels sort of logically progressed through locations. Here it feels very disparate, like the dev team said "Hey let's do a Hong Kong level! Hong Kong looks pretty cool!" so they stuck it in.

Also by reducing the normal difficulty level they've also exposed the weak AI and bare bones level design. There was this bit at the end of one level I jumped onto a boat and the camera turned around and I thought, hey this guy is going to do some slow motion dive and an explosion is going to go off just as he does. And then a second later my prediction came true. When a game becomes predictable, it's just not good.

Also, on the second snow level the objective indicator goes to hell and is pointing all over the freaking place. Then there is this timer ticking down on an explosive and infinite spawining and you don't even know where to go because the objective indicator is wigging out.

I think playing Goldeneye first has ruined COD for me, the AI and level design and weapon balance are all better in GE.

Excluding the controls in Black Ops, it feels to me that nothing has improved here in Treyarch's next game which is disappointing considering that they said we would be "blown away" (by the wii version) and that it was 'ground up', when it obviously isn't.

If you get it for the multiplayer and zombie mode that's great, but single player is not so hot, apart from the fantastic controls IMO.

So its like a PSP game.
