So I picked up Black Ops. And I saw that message about the multiplayer being free...seems like a joke more than anything sinister.
Oh, and in a first for a Call of Duty game, the story's actually decent.
The more I play Black Ops, the less I like it. Discussing it on the technical level (Wii) this is worse than REFLEX, I feel like my initial judgement of it looking about the same or worse than WaW feels true. I am at the end of the second snow level and I have encountered far too many frame rate problems in the game as a whole. Reflex is much smoother. And it's not always in places where there is a lot of stuff going on, there were occasions where I was in a room with two other characters just standing about and the frame rate was slow. From what I saw on 1up, there are some frame rate hiccups at the same point in the HD version too (vietnam trench level), so it's most likely shoddy code.
And in similarly sized environments as WaW, here the frame rate chugged. This game is really visually inconsistent for me, it feels like it looks great on occasion, good sometimes, average most of the time and abysmal occasionally. Having the game crash twice on one particular level doesn't help either.
Now discussing the single player in terms of the design which is the same as the HD versions, I just don't like it. The campaign doesn't feel cohesive, it feels sort of off to me. In WaW or COD4 you were with your team and levels sort of logically progressed through locations. Here it feels very disparate, like the dev team said "Hey let's do a Hong Kong level! Hong Kong looks pretty cool!" so they stuck it in.
Also by reducing the normal difficulty level they've also exposed the weak AI and bare bones level design. There was this bit at the end of one level I jumped onto a boat and the camera turned around and I thought, hey this guy is going to do some slow motion dive and an explosion is going to go off just as he does. And then a second later my prediction came true. When a game becomes predictable, it's just not good.
Also, on the second snow level the objective indicator goes to hell and is pointing all over the freaking place. Then there is this timer ticking down on an explosive and infinite spawining and you don't even know where to go because the objective indicator is wigging out.
I think playing Goldeneye first has ruined COD for me, the AI and level design and weapon balance are all better in GE.
Excluding the controls in Black Ops, it feels to me that nothing has improved here in Treyarch's next game which is disappointing considering that they said we would be "blown away" (by the wii version) and that it was 'ground up', when it obviously isn't.
If you get it for the multiplayer and zombie mode that's great, but single player is not so hot, apart from the fantastic controls IMO.
Here is the zombie mode on Wii. This feels like the most innovative part of the damned game. And I haven't played LFD or anything so I assume they poached the points system?
Please don't play it again. I do not need to see Steel's shorts making a tent shape.

Although you can see that each level in Reflex has a more cohesive atmosphere. The whole color scheme, grey, brown etc, matches everything, from the textures to the skybox and lighting, giving each a more unique look.

I'm going to say this point blank. If you want a good single player FPS, you're doing yourself a diservice if you buy Black Ops over Goldeneye. Graphics, HD version Black Ops wins - multiplayer it wins. Everything else, actual level design, weapon balance, AI, audio, mechanics - Goldeneye wins. It feels so much more intelligent. Playing Black Ops almost insulted my intelligence.
Multiplayer videos look good, they seem to have no slowdown either and the controls make it play really great, even to me who doesn't play online FPS. The aiming of the Wii version is crazy good, the ADS is leagues ahead of Goldeneye. That is the only thing that is improved though sadly.

"Playing Black Ops almost insulted my intelligence."
That one's going to be popular you ignorant troll.
Yeah, hopefully Eurocom get to do another Bond game (even multiplatform like COD) and take a look at Black Ops' controls and multiplayer features to make a more complete package. They could use a few hints in texturing also. Most of GoldenEye looks better but you have things like Bond's hands (which you often see in your face) being barely textured at all, almost just a solid color. The same for some main characters' clothes and other such things. It's probably on all characters actually, but since most are enemies with camo patterns etc, not just regular clothes, it's not so noticable. Of course they should also make sure it's smooth in all levels too, it's not like it looked much better where it got slowdowns so it was probably just not optimised well enough. There's one instance where you start high up in a level and can look down to an open area and it runs fine and has a lot of bloom lighting and stuff, then a little further ahead you're inside a single room with a few objects in and the frame rate goes to hell, especially after they set off some visual effects. But they probably had to rush the game.

Yeah, WTF was with Bond's low poly hands? And I hate stuff like that in bold^ it doesn't make any sense, or even tons of stuff in Black Ops. I mean what are game testers for if they can't point out stupid shit and have the developers fix it? In COD, giving you 5 seconds to do something or die and having to trial and error die and restart at checkpoints is some dumb crap.
Wow at the IGN Goldeneye N64 vs Wii video.
Brings back so many memories, but also, I loved N64 Goldeneye, but it looks LOL when you see it compared to the new one. I still heart it though.
Back to Black Ops, there is little gameplay variation that isn't scripted. You get to sneak and stealth kill some Vietcong in one of the levels, but it's all set up and scripted for you. Try to sneak about in other levels and it's completely impossible. They stage corridors with infinite spawning AI till you run foward into the fray. Then there are scripted motorbike chases and jeep/car driving sequences that have barebones gameplay but are staged to "look" cool.

And they keep interupting the single player levels with flashbacks of you being stuck in the interrogation room. Or even when you use the eye in the sky the game loads up a first person section than loads back the eye in the sky. You don't get that COD feeling of being in one big continuous level because it's constantly being interupted by distractions. The first snow level keeps cutting in and out of a Reznov monologue.
And with the bandana, he looks like Gears of Reznov
Wtf The Last Story co-op?! Oh, it's not the whole game. Still cool though! 6 player PvP and boss fights! I never liked PvP in RPGs but I'll love me some bosses. I could be a tank again just like in WoW thanks to the drawing system. Maybe, if they let me focus on defence and high HP to withstand a lot of hits with little attack.
Monster Hunter Portable 3rd looks cool but I really hate most of the new monsters' design, you can tell it's a new art director who doesn't quite get it... I doubt I'll get it due to the controls, I don't wanna go back to those after Wii. Hopefully Tri G will become a reality too eventually and have new stuff from the main MH team.

HOTD Overkill 2 I will love if true.
I think they would make a Move/Wii version but it's not the same as say Aragorn's quest where you can still play with a normal controller. So I wonder who will come out and make a Move (only) game like Red Steel 2 or Zelda?
I think Kinect might be able to handle on rails shooters, you point with one hand and shake your other hand to fire? Sounds horrible but it's plausible right? In Child of Eden you can see that the pointing with your hand worlds, roughly.
Critical Reception: Treyarch's Call of Duty: Black Ops
You're kidding me. That segment lasts 3 minutes and is you basically walking about for a few minutes with someone behind you spooling off dialogue. You don't even get to explore the whole ship. Fantastic segment?!
You know why the story isn't coherent? Because you can barely understand what the throaty machine distorted interrogator voice is saying. Then you have to put on the subtitles, only the subtitles are white with no outline so when there is any white on the screen, parts of the subtitles are unreadable. Also the sound balance is off with people mumbling while music and explosions peak. I had to play two thirds of the game with subtitles on. And there is this British character Clark whose voice actor seems to change to Reznov's voice mid-way through the level. But maybe the end explains that?
Yup.
Yeah a few minutes and the game puts down markers, you essentially point to an X and press up on the d-pad.
Yup.
