Do you guys think that 3DS will push download games harder? Hard drive included or SDHC cards?

So I'm a few hours into Silent Hill Wii....and really loving it!! The only part I hated so far was the first nightmare scene, cuz I couldn't throw the guys off me and they kept butt-humping Harry to death! But now its all good....

Anyway, I don't know how to explain it but this is the most inspired Silent Hill since SH3, and in fact I like it more than SH3. What's great is that it actually IS a survival horror game, a true adventure and not another action horror shooter. The lack of combat doesn't really matter since SH's combat always sucked anyway, and it puts the focus on what these games should be focused on; adventure, exploration, and atmosphere. Graphically and soundwise its very solid for a Wii game, though still not Metroid or anything. I'm impressed with the way the camera follows Harry...it really looks like he's looking at the world as you go and not just being pointed around. The pacing also is perfect, always something new and the environments are much more interesting than the last 2 SH games combined.

Also love the phone and how it works through the controller, and the psychological profiling!

All in all very happy with this game, but I fear Konami is too stupid to realize they were on the right track here....

I think so because it's the natural evolution of where gaming is headed.  It's one of my favorite things about the PSP. You can download practically anything for it. New retail games, PSOne classics, and download only games.  The only thing they really got wrong with it is the pricing. For download gaming to really take off they need to discount the games to compensate the gamer.  Between savings on production and distribution costs, downloadable games should be at the very least 20% to 30% less than retail, if not more.  Until that happens it will never really take off.

Hard drives aren't suitable for portables anymore. Bulky and with moving parts which means more prone to breaking with their portable on the move nature. Internal memory of 1GB (or 512MB to cut cost) and SDHC support like the Wii would be just fine. With less limits than WiiWare's though. They should allow a DL game to be up to say, about 1/3rd of the internal memory, which means a user can have 3 dl games in the absolute worst case scenario (ie all 3 games are the hugest they can be) + save games at a time without having to buy an SDHC. That way dl games could easily rival cartridge games with little extra limitations in their development. I wish they updated WiiWare with that rule as well, so, 170MB limit per game, not just 50. Though 50 is plenty enough for great games with some smarts and creativity, and they're games with 1500 points max price anyway so it's not likely you'd have people doing retail-level efforts all that often even if they were able to. But it can be a hurdle for some.

Also love the phone and how it works through the controller, and the psychological profiling!

All in all very happy with this game, but I fear Konami is too stupid to realize they were on the right track here....

For the chases, make sure you use both the chuk and remote at the same time in the direction they indicate. A couple of chases in the directional arrows disappear so make sure you remember which way to gesture.

It's an awesome game. I started up another game as soon as I fininshed it. The ending is wow.

Though 50 is plenty enough for great games with some creativity, and they're games with 1500 points max price anyway so it's not likely you'd have people doing retail-level efforts all that often even if they were able to.

With SDHC cards, they should really scrap the file size limit and rethink it. It's not like these cards are expensive.

Oh yeah, Edgecrusher, try calling the all the phone numbers on posters and such. A lot of the calls, most of them contain incidental details, story nuggets that flesh out the world. Some of them seem random but if you listen carefully and play it through it fleshes out the story.

And try playing it a second time answering questions opposite from your first playthrough in the psychologists office.

They can't sell the system without any internal memory when that will mean it's not compatible with all their touted features... Like the 360's arcade or whatever version or something...

And so if they do have internal memory then even without a file limit why would a dev choose to make his game incompatible with DS whose owners don't have an SDHC yet, ie, a game bigger or as big as their internal memory?

Unless it comes with an SDHC included but then that will raise the initial cost and could hurt its long term success so I don't see them adding that much memory by default. And they should still have a file limit, can't have games bigger than retail on DL and end up with say, a FF type RPG with full FMV on download (yes, highly unlikely someone would bother making a DL-only version of such a game) yet full retail cartridge titles unable to reach that content. Or end up having compressed files and asking installations on users highly unlikely to be familiar with such terms.

I guess they could have a limit for DL-only games that go up to $15 but also offer full retail titles for download like Sony is doing, and since those will most likely be bought by more advanced users anyway then allow them to not have a limit at all, so long as they're in separate pages etc (and explicitely state such when you start it up) not lumped together like on PSN. 3DSiWare completely separate interface from a diff store page that has retail titles.

I was about to post that one. MH3 just shy of breaking top 10. Pretty damn good for the epitome of niche games.

It's supposed to be at over 120k, which is double what the last game did in its first month. Granted PSP software sells like shit in the West in general (then again there are success stories like GTA - not CW), but still, that was more than the PS2 games as well, and they did market the PSP releases quite a bit (not as much as Tri by far though). I guess it's pretty good for 10 days but hopefully it will at least double in a short time frame (not in like a year).

For a third party core game on Wii, 11 on the all format charts is very good. Did Red Steel 2 even appear in the top 20 NPD when it launched? I can't remember.

Sega Pushes Xbox 360 and PSP This Year DS and Wii get fewer titles and lower sales targets.

There's a slight imbalance in Sega's software release schedule for the current year. The company says that it plans 15 Xbox 360 SKUs for the year. PS3 and Wii get 11 SKUs each.

Additionally, Sega expects 360 to be its biggest platform in terms of overall software sales, with 2.66 million units. For PS3, Sega expects 2.52 million units. For Wii, Sega expects 1.55 million.

In portables, PSP will get 14 SKUs for 1.93 million units. DS will get 10 SKUs for 1.57 million units.

Sega's apparent leanings towards Xbox 360 and PSP are new this year. Last year, Wii and DS got most Sega releases and sold the most units -- respectively 23 SKUs for 5.74 million units and 24 SKUs for 4.29 million units.

Last year, Xbox 360 got 16 SKUs for 2.3 million units. PS3 got 20 SKUs for 3.56 million units.

PSP got just 8 titles last year, totaling 1.31 million units. The Japan-only Phantasy Star Portable 2 accounted for roughly half of those sales.

Total sales last year were 26.75 million pieces of software across 105 SKUs. Mario & Sonic on DS and Wii accounted for 6.53 million of that software total.

The PSP sold 65K units last month so that's where Sega is going to heavy up with their software?  I sense the Sega of old returning...

It'll be pretty successful in Japan since the PSP still sells a lot there.

Do you guys think that 3DS will push download games harder? Hard drive included or SDHC cards?

I hope. I hope they also add a VC for GBA and GB/GBC games, maybe even for the ability to download some DS games.

The DSiWare has been disappointing, but it shows the potential. It could've been a experiment to see how it'd do. And then maybe Nintendo was going to do a much better download plan with the 3DS.

That's what I hope, anyway.
