Nintendo currently undecided on graphical style for Zelda Wii, looking at Monster Hunter 3 for inspiration

- Link is "already reproducing almost perfectly what you do with the remote and MotionPlus. Our team has already got a solid response from this aspect of the software."
- significant change to the Zelda structure
- hopeful for a showing at E3 2010
- well under development
- MotionPlus was not even around when development on this project started, which had the team working on just how to include it partway through development
- the final graphical style for the game hasn't yet been decided, and while a new style might be chosen, there are hints towards a more realistic approach
- according to Aonuma, some of the internet speculation has been correct
- Aonuma spent time playing Monster Hunter 3 to see what aspects really appeal most to the player

No More heroes 2 gamesradar preview

"Few things deflate one’s sense of manhood like having your lightsaber run out of juice right when you’re about to cut some dude in half. Even worse: The process of “recharging” the wounded fellow is uncomfortably familiar. You just sort of grab it and shake it around until it’s ready for another go."

Holy crap at NMH.

People who do not want story spoilers, please do not read anything. Just know that the overworld is gone.

"Unlike the original game, which let you physically explore the city in an open-world setting, you'll now navigate to different locations via a world map and warp directly to them."

Suda said that everyone is playing Mario right now, but once they are done they will play NMH2. I say he is right, day one. (for cheap of course)

That video interview looked cool. The game looks like everything the first game should have been. Better AI and physics, visuals, story, effects.

This is worrying, shouldn't the game be almost done by now? Seriously they finished Twilight Princess end of 06, its 3 years later. If the Zelda team hadn't had to make Wii Fit, (yes you read that correctly) maybe we'd be playing this by now.

Well, Reggie did imply that it wasn't coming out next year on GT TV, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

I don't begrudge the team for making something other than another Zelda game. It must get very boring working on the same franchise over and over and over and over again. Perhaps Wii Fit helped them to recharge their creative batteries so-to-speak?

Teh screw that!

Take a two month holiday chaps, then get planning for the next one. They need Iwata to boot stomp a 1 year developed Majora style game out.

Zelda team did not make Wii Fit! Wii Fit is made by EAD group 1. Zelda by EAD group 3, which is also named Zelda team, because they only make Zelda games. See here for proof. Where the hell did you get that silly idea?

I am guessing they started working on Zelda Wii in 2005. Remember that they delayed Zelda to get it on the Wii also. So all the artists and level designers were probably already brainstorming in 2005.

And Miyamoto said last E3 that they are first going to make the structure and gameplay before they are going to do the graphical style. As long as they have everything else done, like dungeons, overworld, Wii motion+ controls, then the graphical style should not take that long. I am hoping for a "mature"cell shaded look. I want Zelda to look like the art in the OOT, MM and TP manuals.

I should have known not to take Gamingeek's word on that!

Yeah, I remember watching a making-of video on Metroid Prime where they had all of the levels created in plain white & grey polygons-only. They added the textures and lighting afterwards.

You should know by now never to doubt the Geek. This interview is only with 5 team members and 3 of them were working on Twilight Princess before Wii Fit. A large portion of Wii Fit staff are Zelda guys. Miyamoto said that ageeeeeeeeees ago.

http://us.wii.com/wii-fit/iwata_asks/vol4_page1.jsp

From Zelda to Wii Fit
Iwata
For the last part of this series, I would like to interview the five development staff members involved in the sound, design and planning of Wii Fit. Please start by introducing yourselves.

Minegishi
I’m Toru Minegishi from the Sound Group at EAD’s Software Development Department. I was primarily involved in the background music for Wii Fit. Previously, I was involved in the sound development for the Animal Crossing and Zelda series, and with Twilight Princess1 I worked as main composer2.
1. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, a game released for Wii and the Nintendo GameCube in December 2006 in Japan and US.
2. The person in charge of composing and compiling the game music.

Miyagawa
I’m Yohei Miyagawa, also from the Software Development Department. I’m a sound programmer, and for Wii Fit I was in charge of programming the sound effects. My last project was Twilight Princess, for which I mainly produced the sound effects.
Oyama
My name is Yoshiyuki Oyama, and I’m a designer in the Software Development Department. Until now, I’ve mainly worked on games in the Zelda series. I was in charge of character design for Majora’s Mask and The Wind Waker and enemy design for Twilight Princess. For Wii Fit, I worked as design director for the first time.
Iwata
Now, the three gentlemen here have all been involved in developing Zelda games. What were your first impressions when you were suddenly asked to go from making Zelda games to making a game that would allow users to weigh themselves every day?
Minegishi
The Zelda games and Wii Fit sit on really opposite ends of the gaming spectrum, so my first impression was, "This is going to be really different." Having said that, I had an interest in body balance long before I started working on the Zelda games.
Oyama
The first thing I thought when I was assigned to the Wii Fit team was, "What’s this team working on?" Even though I was in the same department, I had heard almost nothing about this project and I had absolutely no idea what the team was working on. Besides, for the past three years I had been doing nothing but designing enemy characters for Zelda games. I didn’t even know what they expected from me! (laughs) That’s why, unlike some of the other team members, I didn’t feel anything like I was destined to work on Wii Fit. (laughs) Having said that, I do remember approaching Wii Fit as a completely novel piece of software, and I considered the ways in which I could reflect my experience in this project.

Iwata
This was your first time directing a game’s overall design, wasn’t it? Even if Wii Fit isn’t on the same scale as the Zelda games, you must have felt a different sense of responsibility coming into this project.

Oyama
For Twilight Princess I was placed in charge of the enemy design staff, so I’d already had some experience directing. But with a Zelda game, there’s already an existing stylistic blueprint in place to which all you need to do is add individually-designed parts. With a completely new piece of software like Wii Fit, I realized that I would have a major responsibility in finding the best ways to compile all the different bits of design that each designer would be turning over to me.

That are just 3 people. Nintendo staff rotates a lot. So what? Some people that worked on Mario Kart could have filled in for these people working on Wii Fit. I still do not see how Wii Fit has delayed the next Zelda games. I you want to put blame on something, blame it on Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass, because they were actually created by Zelda team.

Why would anyone feel the need to blame anyone while they were creating 2 masterful games such as those?

It was a roundtable with 5 of the devs and 3 of them are Zelda guys, you want Iwata to sit the whole frigging team down and ask?

Miyamoto himself said that the Zelda team was heavily involved in making Wii fit and Wii Music. Then he said that they were reforming for the next zelda game. Why would it need reforming unless it had been split up? After Twilight princess they took a break developing different titles across the range, shifting employees about to different projects, Wii Fit being the main one.

The Hyliasaid:
Shigeru Miyamoto, ...noted that while Pikmin's Lead Designer worked on Wii Music much like Zelda's top talent took on Wii Fit, both developers are now back to working on their classic franchises."

What does this mean? It means that some of Zelda's top developers were working on Wii Fit, but have now gone back to doing what they do best, working on Zelda games!

Miyamoto said:
What you can't forget is that we need to continue to make Zelda games. (laughs) The way we operate is that we usually have people moving from one team to another, so giving people the opportunity to move around from a project like a Zelda game to something a little different like WiiMusic has really helped invigorate the staff members and helped create a really great internal team. In fact, the lead art designer on WiiMusic is one of the lead art designers of Pikmin. The art design for WiiFit was one of the Zelda designers. But they've (all) gone back to their original teams. (laughs)

Iwata said:
Wii Fit originally started out with Miyamoto-san’s idea that weighing yourself daily can be fun, so this really felt like a project that was started from scratch. These stories of fateful encounters, the birth of the Wii Balance Board, getting people who worked on Zelda onboard, and finally bringing the project to completion despite originally having had no idea where to even start, are what I consider to be the elements that really make product development interesting.

Oyama said:
The first thing I thought when I was assigned to the Wii Fit team was, "What’s this team working on?" Even though I was in the same department, I had heard almost nothing about this project and I had absolutely no idea what the team was working on. Shibata said:
I actually wanted to work on a Zelda game! (laughs) But ever since my days attending the Game Seminar, I had been hearing that it was important to develop as many different types of game as possible to increase the gaming population, and that it was important to put more effort into games that appeal to female users..

So these guys didn't even want to do Wii Fit it seems like they were just shifted onto it.

Zhu Zhu Pets coming to DS, courtesy of Activision

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Activision Publishing and GameMill Publishing, Inc. announced today an agreement with Cepia, LLC to develop and publish video games based on the smash hit Zhu Zhu Pets(TM). The first Zhu Zhu Pets(TM) game will be released on the Nintendo DS(TM) in the spring of 2010.

"Zhu Zhu Pets(TM) success in 2009 speaks for itself and we're confident it will be even bigger in 2010," said David Oxford at Activision Publishing. Gary Miller, President, GameMill Publishing, stated, "It is our goal to expand this proven franchise in a way that fans of the wildly popular hamster toy line and video gamers alike will embrace and love to play."

A genuine craze in the toy aisle, Zhu Zhu Pets(TM) was recently nominated for two top industry awards including: "Girl Toy of the Year" and "Innovative Toy of the Year." It is expected to be one of the top selling toys of the 2009 holiday season.

"Ever since Zhu Zhu Pets(TM) exploded in popularity, launching a video game has felt like a natural fit in product evolution," said Natalie Hornsby, Director of Marketing Strategies and Brand Development, Cepia, LLC. "We share our fans' excitement in bringing Zhu Zhu Pets(TM) to the video game space, and think this will help us reach more kids to engage in the Zhu Zhu Pets(TM) experience."

The video games will be created and marketed by Activision and GameMill in close collaboration with toy maker Cepia, LLC. The Zhu Zhu Pets(TM) video game for Nintendo DS is in development now with Black Lantern Studios, Inc., who is bringing forward the brand DNA elements that have made Zhu Zhu Pets(TM) a worldwide phenomenon -- arcade action as well as care and nurturing of beloved hamsters!

See it not just Zelda team. The Pikmin team was also relocated. Nintendo relocates their team all the time. Someone had to make Wii Fit. And they made two Zelda games after TP. So your point does not stand at all.

But that does not matter. You said Zelda team was developing Wii Fit. Which is wrong. Just accept it and move on.

What-EVER.

cat-talk-to-the-hand.jpg

WTFs the difference when Zelda team is split up and assigned against their will to shitty casual games (like Wii Fit) instead of making the next proper Zelda game?

You're splitting hairs like a bitch to be annoying as usual. Nyaa

Miyamoto said:
Yes, the Zelda team is taking a break, many to work on Wii Fit for this holiday. Until we have new ideas, we cannot affirm a new entry yet in the series.

GG you made two statement

1) Zelda team made Wii Fit

Which is false.

2) Thanks to Wii Fit we do not have a Zelda

Again wrong. There have been two Zelda's plus Link's crossbow training

Fact are facts. Sorry for letting reality get in the way of your complaining

You know what I like about games like Zhu Zhu Pets?  I like thinking about all the little children playing the games..... Their little hands on the DS.... I like that.
