MSN: How Nintendo lost its stride

But therein lies the problem: Once Nintendo became so focused on appealing to undiscerning non-gamers with a flood of terrible titles -- also known as "shovelware" -- it lost its drive to produce long-lasting, quality games and innovate upon past successes. When awful releases like Game Party -- which scored a dismal 25 out of 100 on Metacritic -- became one of its most successful third-party games, there wasn't a dire need to put much effort into developing better titles.

As a result, lasting appeal declined and customers abandoned the underwhelming console and lineup. Current sales are down 48% from last year and the company expects to sell 20 million Wiis worldwide in 2009 -- six million fewer than a previous estimate.

Making matters worse, the future looks just as bleak.

Rumor: Wii 2 Specs leaked?
  • - The Wii2 system will feature a Blu-Ray drive with a secondary aim of stopping piracy.
  • - 1080P and lower resolutions will be supported, for blu-ray movies and games.
  • - The release date is scheduled for third quarter of 2010.
  • - The release will be worldwide and on the same day for all countries.
  • - A scheme will be available in which it is possible to trade in the original Wii for a cheaper price on the new Wii 2.
"Told you so! But it'll be called Wii Plus!"

There is a better chance of aliens landing in my front yard than this happening. Nyaa

You said that about me getting on the podcast. Nyaa

But yeah like you guys I would probably go for the trade in deal too. Which is precisely why this rumour is bogus. They are telling us everything we want to hear.

I am VERY late with this, but this is me when they said 3D Dot Game Heroes was coming to the US.

Indeed, very late. Was this news delivered to your door by snail mail? Nyaa

Latest Ratchet & Clank Likely To Be Insomniac's Last 60fps Game

As long as a game has a constant 30fps, I'm happy, especially if the graphics are noticeably improved.

PUBIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT (yes pubic)

Today is Halloween and there is a special event in Animal Crossing tonight.

October 31st // Halloween
During your town's annual Halloween Party, all the villagers will be wearing a
pumpkin mask. They'll run up to you when they see you, and if you talk to them
you can choose to give them candy or be 'tricked'. The latter option will
either give you a temporary pumpkin head, turn inventory items into jack o'
lanterns and boxes, or turn your current clothes into rags (I suggest wearing
a design and keeping valuables at home). However, there is one person in town
who can be identified because he doesn't run up to you at all--Jack. Jack will
give you Spooky items in exchange for candies, and if you refuse to give him
candy, you'll get another special item (there are four of these, so you need
to refuse four times). Simply enter a building and exit to get more stuff from
Jack, provided you can find him again.

PlayStation losses grow in Q2

PlayStation and VAIO businesses record falling sales and increased losses

Sony's Networked Services Division, which houses the company's PlayStation and VAIO businesses, recorded falling sales and increased losses in the second quarter ended September 30.

Sales decreased 24.2 per cent year-on-year to 352.6 billion yen ($3.9b/£2.3b), while the division made an operating loss of 58.8 billion yen ($646m/£390m), a deterioration of 18.2 billion ($200m/£121m) compared to the second quarter of the previous fiscal year.

"Sales in the game business decreased year-on-year primarily as a result of the impact of the appreciation of the yen as well as a decrease in unit sales of PlayStation 2 hardware and software," the company said.

"In the game business, the deterioration in profitability was mainly due to a decrease in PS2 hardware and software unit sales, and the impact of the appreciation of the yen. The deterioration in profitability for VAIO PCs was due to the reasons noted above that contributed to lower sales."

The company sold 3.2 million PS3s, up from 2.4 million units in the same quarter of the prior fiscal year. PSP sales were down from 3.2 million to 3 million, while PS2 sales declined from 2.5 million to 1.9 million.

23.9 million PS3 titles were sold, up from 21.2 million during the second quarter of 2008. PSP game sales were up from 11.8 million to 12.9 million, but PS2 software sales more than halved, from 23.2 million to 11.1 million.

Sweet, Dead Space 2 hitting next year. I absolutely loved the first one so I'm certainly very eager for the next one.

Do you want it traditional or would you like it to work with Natal/PS3 wand?

Dead Space 2 rail-shooter, FTW! Do onto other consoles as has been done to Wii!

That would be hilarious.

Ha! Scoff all you want but I'd love to see a light-gun game on the 360. I really enjoyed RE: UC and I'll most likely really enjoy RE: DSC as well. As for traditional or Natal/PS3 Wand controls it's hard to make a call in favour of them because I haven't seen how much they can be utilised. I just want a kick-ass game either way. By the way I am actually quite enthralled by the possibilities Natal can bring to the table and am very much looking forward to it's release. I'll most likely be an early adopter.

After finishing Uncharted 2 a couple nights ago, DS will be my next game. Looking forward for a good couple of scares.

Yeah it really is a fantastic game. It was just recently made available on the Games On Demand service for the 360. It's probably the only decently priced game on the service as well. Stores where I live are selling the game for $40 Canadian and on GoD it's going for $20 Canadian so you might want to compare the prices where you live.

But you've already played it right?

If you want some Halloween scares, log onto Animal Crossing tonight and meet the Pumpkin King. Wooohahahahahahha!

So if you like lightgun games and Dead Space, why not get Extraction?

I wont pay for it but I will get it gifted. With poor sales I expect the price to drop by December too.

Oh, I already have it, lol. It's been a part of my obscene backlog for a good while now. It's just a matter of getting back to it again (only played it for about an hour or so).

My wife and kids will be thrilled by those news. I have a truckload of candy stored for them in anticipation.

Yeah I like light-gun games and I like Dead Space and Extraction would be a game I would enjoy but right now it just isn't high enough on my priority list, way too many other games I'd rather get first.

An hour? You penis.

I got it because you were hyping it as more RE than RE5. Damn you Nyaa

I like boot stomping fools the most.

It's strange but there is no notice on the board next to the townhall and no Tortimer out there to anticipate the festivities.

It could happen after 7 or 8pm like on Christmas eve when Jingle came to town. But I find it strange that its not been mentioned yet. Perhaps Halloween is a US specific in-game holiday?

As far as I know, Halloween night is on Oct 31st? Today is 30th. Might as well be tomorrow.
