The amount of cinematic moments, well produced FMV, and easy to manage interface makes this one a seriously impressive package. More variation in levels is needed, but it’s a great offering.
9.5 Graphics
Beautiful model work, lots of abstract geometry, and impressive animation, specifically in the astronauts and bosses. Each level feels very similar, but apart from that it’s an amazing offering.
8.0 Sound
The techno “noise” fusion of music will be a plus and minus for different people. The sound effects are well done, though very compressed, and the voiceover work is well implemented where found.
8.5 Gameplay
The control and weapon balancing is very slick, and mobility feels great. Puzzles work well, the game always seems to drop the right ammo, though it does get repetitive at times.
8.0 Lasting Appeal
Pace yourself, and you’ll enjoy it. There are a few serious déjà vu moments, but it’s a fun game with serious legs, and a nice level of exploration mixed with combat.

KID ICARUS WAS SUPPOSSED TO COME OUT IN 2008
Although I freaking love Animal Crossing: City Folk, I understand why a lot of people thought Nintendo's 2008 holiday line up was pretty weak. Compared to Q4 2007's releases of Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy, and Q4 2006's The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Q4 2008 on the Wii was the driest holiday yet for the little white shat-box.
Rumor has it that this dry spell wasn't always part of the plan. According to an inside source, Nintendo was originally planning to present Kid Icarus Wii at E3 2008, then release the game a few months later. Due to problems with Factor 5 (the developer long rumored to have ties to the project), that plan fell through, which left Nintendo of America feeling "pretty bummed." Kid Icarus Wii may still come together if Factor 5 can find someone to give them lots of money (hint: Nintendo has lots of money).
If the production art above (rumored to be leaked from Factor 5) is any indication, I'm not so sure that I mind that this project is on hold. Guys, it's Kid Icarus, not Generic Americ-anime Action Hero Icarus, or Tatooed Man with Muscles and Frowns Icarus. I've already got Kratos, Billy from Resident Evil Zero, and god know how many other videogame tough guys to meet my tattooed, frowning muscle-man needs. I think that some kids were never meant to grow up, and Pit from Kid Icarus is one of them.
Of that bourgeoning market, Hayes closes with an interesting assessment on the developers and publishers which wrangle for market supremacy within it: “One could argue that there is an over-supply of high-quality games. Despite the huge growth in the market, the amount of available quality games has outstripped that growth. In other words, consumers have never had it so good – the question is whether this relentless supply is sustainable.”
I really agree with this guy from SEGA. There really are too many quality games today, especially if you own all the machines. There is literally no way in hell you could possibly play every game that averages over a 7.5 rating (I.E. the ones worth your time).
That's why I said when news of Factor 5 and Free Radical came about, it wasn't real surprising. As big as gaming is now....there are SOOO many game companies and SOOO many games that its impossible for them all to succeed.
IMO, there needs to be less developers, less games, but bigger teams at each developer which would in turn make each game that much bigger and grander. As the need for high production values and larger teams grows, this is only inevitable.

I like the idea of a mature Kid Icarus game, as the Wii needs more mature high-quality games anyway. But that just looks lame. Tecmo Rygar lame.

I agree partly with what you are saying, about the sheer amount of high quality titles and released in clusters for the most part. It's getting to the stage where it doesn't matter if you have a good quality game, because the other guy has a better game or a bigger licence or a bigger marketing budget. Oh and there are several other guys with several similar quality products out there, all at the same time. Consumers can't get everything, we have to pick and choose, so games need to be cheaper and shorter IMO.
Clustering everything together into MEGA games just reminds me of a second party system, you are just piling all your eggs into one massive basket and if that fails its one massive clusterfuck. I prefer the smaller, clever games option at lower costs. But basically at this point, especially with the global recession, games companies are suddenly realising that what everyone said at the start of the generation is true: the high cost of developing epic, HD games is a risky prospect and its hitting companies hard right now. The successful guys are laughing it up, but at the expense of everyone else. Tomb Raider, 1.5 million sales a failure? Remember the report I posted where it said that only 10% of games make a profit? The costs are so high that they have to sell a huge amount to justify things.

Whatever snowboard game I play next, it has to be using the balance board. Screw Wii Fit, if We Ski and Snowboard came bundled and was cheaper, I would instant buy it. They are actually suppossed to be good games.

2K boss hits out at "crappy" Wii titles News
The boss of the company which brought us Carnival Games (GameRankings rating: 58) has claimed the Wii software market is overrun with "crappy titles".
"Where people go wrong in the casual market is that, while the development costs are exploding on the casual side, they're treating the Wii like the old PC market - making cheap, accessible games," Christoph Hartmann told MCV. Hartmann, of course, is head of 2K, the publisher behind titles such as Go, Diego, Go!: Great Dinosaur Rescue (55).
"They think if they make ten titles and two are hits, they will finance the other eight," added Hartmann, presumably not referring to 2K's own Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer (43).
"But they forget these eight crappy titles will flood the market and will lead to problems in terms of production - and upset retailers," continued Hartmann, who was probably not talking about Carnival Games: Mini-Golf (47).
Hartmann went on to bemoan the fact it's harder for non-licensed titles to stand out with so much competition. "There’s far too much stuff in the Wii market [now] and it’s hard to shine," he observed. "While the Wii is the strongest growing console, it's a risk not to have well-known brands in your games."
2K's recent releases include Dora the Explorer: Dora Saves the Snow Princess (53), released for DS, PS2 and Wii on 5th December.

He's right, though guilty of the same thing. This is why consumers can't distinguish between crap and stuff like Boom Blox which superficially - boxart, family friendly, cartoony-is really good. And the sales of decent games suffer because there is a flood of crap. Part of the problem is that most people dont read reviews. I know people who buy consoles and just buy whatever they see and advert for and fancy, rather than reading a review and getting what's good. But the Wii is being used like the low rent PS1/2 market at the moment with all sorts of crap being made because its cheap and easy to do so.
