I keep getting interrupted by pesky customers today, so here is the PS3mote's right side, I haven't got the nunchuk ready to go yet.  I don't think I could begin to pass this off for a hoax.  It is way too fake looking and photoshopped.  Oh well... anyway, if they do a controller like this, this will need that IR sensor where I've put it, otherwise your finger would be in the way.

See, the problem I see with that is that using the stick might be too difficult. With one's strongest fingers up at the top for the shoulder buttons; with the large face button region in the center; with the wing that I assume is there but obstructed in the pic; with an off-center stick; and with a button incorporated into the stick, one's hand may not have good enough control of the stick to make such a controller practical. That's my biggest worry with trying to "split" a DualShock in half: that the space taken for all the buttons the DualShock has will force the stick to be in a position that destabilizes the hand/thumb when the stick is used.

Am I not thinking about this very thoroughly? Am I missing something, or have I hit upon a justifiable concern?

You might be right.  I was sorta assuming you'd hold it in your palm with your middle finger, index and pinky supporting most of the weight so that your thumb would be free to move the stick.  In my mind it works well, but reality might be a totally different thing.  To be honest, I've always wanted a spherical controller that would fit naturally into your hands so that you wouldn't have to grip anything.  I've got carpal tunnel, and it makes me picky as to what games I can play and what controllers I can use for long periods of time.

I remember this controller being a mock up for Revolution. Honestly, I like the idea a lot.

How would we use the right stick when the halves are separate?

Rag, I edited my post with a more detailed and probably well-known description of what I was talking about.

I actually like the idea of the controller ravenprose posted above, but it still doesn't look quite right, even given the stick issue I just asked him about.

Edit: That thing doesn't look sturdy enough. As it is, people go as far as snapping today's controllers in half. Breaking that thing would be all too easy, it looks like. But I do mostly like the appearance of the wing and button portion of both halves. Happy

Rag and Vader with all do respect, that controller idea is crappy. Aiming is a lot easier when you have some a stick / remote shape, because we uselly point at stuff with remotes, laserpens or sticks. Is not easier not add more buttons to the wiimote? And why would you need a second anolog stick. The pointer is what replaces the analog stick.

The idea of a Raven is better, but the most sensible solution for now it to have seperate controller methods. I think it would have been the best if the Wii was packed in with a wiimote, nunchuck and classic controller. This way you have evrerything covered.

@gaminggeek Oh yeah pointing and selecting items along with aiming with ranged weapons were definately aspects of the Wii-mote that I really enjoyed most in Zelda: TP. I also enjoyed most of the close-up fighting aspects as well especially some of the techniques that you could learn from the ghost knight like the ones that utilized the movement of the nunchuck.

There are certainly many more games that I'd love to try and all those games are in that list.

And just think about this, that was the FIRST game to attempt that. Since then only No More Heroes has attempted such a thing, but Suda-51 apparently doesn't understand 3D design too well (LOL @ having enemies attack me from behind when I can't see them).

dvader said:

Holy crap, I swear I never saw that new PS controller news. LOL

EDIT: Wait maybe I did, but I had that idea in my head for a long time now.

If they can't even get developers to utilize the standard six-axis controllers motion "capablities", then how the fuck do the expect them to utilize an add-on periphial?

edgecrusher said:

Dude...if Animal Crossing Wii is Nintendo's "big core game" I'm going to be pissed. Nothing against AC, but that should NEVER be the big real game of a system's year.

There's Kid Icarus, not to mention that Nintendo promised to unveil a big drad of titles.

ravenprose said:
Okay, what's wrong with Kotaku? Did I miss some sort of anti-Kotaku memo?

The site is very inaccurate in reportings. They're similar to Surfer Girl, the only difference is that they hear things that are true or rumoured and they post it and try to fill in the details, Surfer Girl just made everything up from scratch (hence why he left because out of all of his posted rumours only 4 or 5 of them came true).

edgecrusher said:
That's exactly what Nintendo should have come out with. I'd much rather have that than the lame ass classic pad with its cheap feel and wannabe Snes shape.

I'd far prefer the Classic controller for the VC titles. I personally like the varitey. Classic controller for 16-bit, GC for most 64-bit, Wii Remote for 8-bit, Hori Stick for arcade games.

But yeah packing in a standard controller might have dwindled the Wii's reputation. Maybe in the not so distant future Nintendo can do something similar.

Now with this whole Microsoft and SONY copying the Wii remote, well I've said this before and I will say it again IT IS POINTLESS. Okay let's just say that the controllers catch on, will the Wii be obsolete to the average consumer? No. Will the Wii be obsolete to the gamer? No.

Why? Simple. For the consumer the Wii has already captured the market. It doesn't matter what the PS3 and 360 do the Wii has already captured the minds of most consumers of being "The must own console." This is just like the IPOD, it's a piece of shit outdated and over-priced hardware/software yet it is also by far the #1 selling. Not to mention that the 360 and PS3 have gone to great lengths of being "The core consoles" of choice.

For the gamer well yes you will get your graphically impressive shooters with IR control....but that's all you are going to get. Possibly have multiplats that simple use the motion controls to replace the traditional controls (I.E. Wii multiplats with the 360/PS3's bells and whistles) but no more then that. If this is all you want that is fine, but one thing I will tell you is that you will NEVER get games like King's Story, Zack and Wiki, Trauma Center, De Blob, Warioland Wii, No More Heroes, Boom Blox, and what not nor nothing like them. They should have fun convincing developers to make games that ignore the conventional use of tech. on systems which their whole existence is based on. When buying systems such as these people expect a total cutting edge experience that they couldn't have gotten on another console. Buying games with such low budget put into them just isn't going to fly.

I mean this is essentially a catch-22 situation. I mean these games have to be developed and cutting edge enough to compete with other games on the 360 or they will sell like shit, however they need experience by starting with smaller not so cutting edge games in order to get to that mark. I mean just look at the DS, that system has been out for years, and by my knowledge the only game I played that was designed with dual screen gameplay/presentation and touchscreen gameplay/presentation was The World Ends With You. Besides that I can't think of anything.

So sure the PS3 and 360 can copy the Wii Remote if they want to but the best they can get out of it are probably IR Controlled Shooters, Pick up and Play games on XBLA/PSN, and some multiplats that utilize the controller by replacing button actions with the controller. In terms of games that were made ground up specifically for the controller and the different and unique games that come out on platforms like the Wii and DS I'd be surprised if such a thing happens on such systems.

How would we use the right stick when the halves are separate?

I didn't make the pic, so it's not exactly how I would design the button/stick layout. I like the overall shape and break-away right side, though.

I wasn't even really saying that I think the controller would be ideal.  I mostly saw Vader's drawing and was bored enough to want to do my own thing.  I'd want a second analog stick simply from playing Metroid Prime 3.  I thought turning was a bit of a mess when you had to point the controller at the edge of the screen to turn.  That's just my opinion though.

Second stick would be for camera control and for use when you reattach. The ideal thing would be to have a wiimote shape and add more buttons, should not really be an issue. Its just so many people are used to the PS/360 type controller that I quickly made up something that keeps that type of design but allows for a sensor.

Hires, my mock up would have the R2 under the control so you would always have balance, just like the wiimote with the B button.

So you want to play metroid with a pointer for aiming, an anolog stick for movement and another anolog stick for turning? What are you a mutant? Do you have 3 hands? How would you manage that! Oh how about IR for pointing, anolog for turning and balanceboard for movement?

So you decided to make adjustments to appease some people. Listen Vader Nintendo did that with Twilight Princess. It was everything the fans wanted and yet they complained. The leason, people are retarded, do not listen to them. Same thing applies to your situation.

It just seems like I've pissed you off for saying that I thought the turning controls in MP3 were crap.  I don't know what I'd do to fix it, but they didn't work for me.

Why would I be pissed off? I just thought your idea was well too complicated. That's why I asked you the questions. By the way the obvious solution to your problem is a greater sensitivity and/or greater turning speeds. So you do not have to point to the edge of the screen to get the speed you want. You might want to try Medal of Honor 2. Note I said try not buy, because I heard the game is mediocre. Unless my suspision of you being a mutant is right, than you can use your 3 handed idea.
