It's pretty fucked up. Good tech overall, but poorly implemented so far. No buy from me, unless a VAST improvement is shown before the add-on release.

Now we have seen Kinect in all its glory, what are your thoughts.

I know I was knocked for six about a few things.

1. It only works when you are standing up. Even for gestures when pausing movies.

2. It seems to only work with 2 players at any one time, no 4 player party fun.

3. It doesn't track fingers, this is huge as you won't get the fine 3D space tracking you can with Move and the wii remote (when using IR)

4. Traditional games are out, a Forza stand around mode not withstanding.

Perhaps used in conjuction with the 360 controller it could be useful for a secondary function. Otherwise, controllerless gaming needs a stick and buttons.

5. It seems to be $150

The more time that passes between the reveal the more it looks exactly like the Sony EyeToy for PS2, in terms of it's fun and appeal.  Of course, the EyeToy was $40 USD, which makes a big difference.  I bought almost all the games for the EyeToy and the device for under $200.

Based on the gaming experiences I had with the EyeToy, I know it was a homerun for parties but never twice in a row, and never fun using by yourself.  I did not, and do not intend to, buy an Eye for my PS3 -- been there done that.

So I can see Kinect selling to people who:

- have large disposable incomes who try the device at a store while a little buzzed.

- habitual marijuana users.

- Moms who are trying to create an environment in which their aging children will want to socialize with their parents.

I thought it would be a lot better than what was shown, I though MS would for sure have a core game that shows us how a game like that would play but they did not. Plus they need to fix the no sitting thing immediately. For a person like me it is basically a disaster, I came into E3 curious, kind of wanting one and now I don't care about it at all.

I still believe it will sell more than the Move though.

Well despite the whole "having to stand" for the gesture movements, which I'm really hoping they'll be able to fix somehow, I really like it. I thought that Dance Central and Your Fitness really showed off the tech quite nicely. The sports game collection and the River Adventure game looked quite fun and were two games I could see myself playing. Thinking about the price it sounds pretty reasonable given the tech behind it plus it can pivot and follow you so it seems like a fair price. I'm still planning on picking one up when it launches.

Has to sell more given the price points.

When you say improvement do you mean in terms of tech or in terms of games support?

That's how I feel. When Kinect and Move were announced at last years E3 I was more excited for Natal, it seemed like something new. Now it's just sorta eh.

.

I mean, in terms of better implementation for the technology. Maybe in combination with traditional controls, I dunno. I honestly have a lot of doubts regarding its use as a standalone control method. I wouldn't touch it if it was released like it is now.

Games support will eventually come, once developers get a grip on the technology, but if the hardware manufacturer is STILL fumbling around with it, a few months before release, then I guess my hopes for it to become viable are between slim and none.

MS really fucked up with this approach, IMO. Someone at GAF said that, when looking for a slice of the pie that the "casual" market represents, Sony was doing things somewhat right, trying to mimic a tried and true approach to motion controls, although they are at a high risk of pricing themselves out of that holy grail of market share. MS, stupidly, is only focusing on the insane sales that Nintendo is raking, but doesn't have even a small fraction of the talent that Nintendo has to come up with things that people really want.

I completely agreed with him.

Heh. They wanted to copy Nintendo and they did - just not the copy they wanted.

I see. TBH I was almost expecting MS to have a controller to go with the camera like PS Eye and the Move remotes track. But then they made such a big deal about a controllerless experience that it would be very egg on face to do that now.
