I'm really considering playing Doom sometime soon. I've mostly just played Doom 3.
I played Rogue Galaxy this year. After enjoying Dark Chronicle I was excited for the new Level-5 game, but didn't play it until more than a decade later. It was okay.

Skyrim. I had it on 360, still have it actually but the roaring hoover like sound of the system stopped me from playing it in bed.
The other games I played where all released before this year.
It is really hard to choose one particular game.
Probably Yakuza 5, which I'm playing right now. Since it was download only on the PS3, I just kept forgetting about it. One thing I like about physical copies is I'm always reminded to play them as they sit on my shelf. Digital games I always forget about. But yeah, Yakuza 5 is that samne great charming shit it always has been. It's amazing the rate at which they pump these out. There's also a remake on the first game on PS4 that I just found out about a few weeks ago. Yakuza 0 has also been out for some time now on PS4 which I got day one, but haven't gotten to yet. And Yakuza 6 comes out in March. Phew...

Rogue Galaxy was a major letdown for me when I finally played it a couple years ago. It had all the pieces of a good game, but it was missing a couple big things, but I can't really figure out what they were. It just felt like a step backwards from the Dark Cloud games and Dragon Quest 8. Though if I'm totally honest, after playing Dark Cloud 2 a bit this year, I can say that it has not aged well at all.
Since I just got my PS4 this year, I was late to the party on just about everything I played. In fact, I only played 2 games that came out this year, and everything else was older. But in the spirit of the thread I'd say Diablo III, since that was pretty much a last gen game.
Sadly, I didn't love it. It was good and all, but it felt like the story was bigger than the game deserved. The story was really well told, and did a great job of weaving the past events into a bigger picture, but at the heart it was a still a mindless hack-and-slash. And I like those game, but I like them when they're more like the original with a simple straight-forward quest. Anyway it was fine, but looking back on it, waiting 5 years to play it wasn't such a bad thing.
I like Diablo 3, but I agree that it felt kind of lacking somehow. I think the long wait didn't do it any favors. When you go that long without a new game in a legendary franchise, how can it live up to the nostalgia driven expectations? In a way I fear the same fate for Metroid Prime 4. 11 years since the last one is a looong wait.
lol it wouldn't confirm the submit, so i had to hit it like 3 times.
But yeah it's super neat, normally I'm indifferent towards tactical shooters that aren't Rainbow Six because that genre is a misnomer. You're not less tactical in some of these other type of games, because you have more health, can take some bullets, n yada yada. Those tactical shooters are named that because once you take all those interesting FPS mechanics away, that's all they fucking have is basic tactics, in a positioning challenge. Rainbow Six at least had a planning phase, and sort of like SRPG character perma deaths n stuff. Gives that game some weight.
Swat 4 has a neat scoring system on being able to do things clean, and that takes a lot of dancing n adjusting over the keyboard to cleaning rooms, marking stuff with the sniper, no getting out of sticky situations with strafing since the game slows you the fuck down for that type of stuff. It's realism simplifies the core act of moving n shooting, with harsh punishments for poor positioning. But there is still interesting decision making else where.
Doom for me. I can’t believe I missed out on this when it was first released. It’s Doom all the way, very reminiscent of the days playing the original back in 1995. Fantastic combat, great upgrades, deviously hidden areas, this game is fantastic. I haven’t even tried multiplayer yet.
