Ever get that feeling that something you once loved years ago wasn't really worth all the love today?

It's a kind of feeling you'd get mostly towards older games - where you wonder just how exactly you stuck with those bad games for so long...and actually enjoyed it! It's never really happened to me - every game that I played or owned when I was younger was usually of a decent calibre. I never had any stinkers...well, my brothers did, but that's beside the point.

The point in question? I doubt that it was going to happen with me...and a newer game.

The game in question is Final Fantasy X. I first played it back in 2004 (I never owned a PS2 until late 2003), and dropped it after 14 hours of play. I never really quite understood why - it was either because I hit a boss that I couldn't beat (not revealing - it's kind of a spoiler...unless people wantt to know), or because of my 'tradition' where I stop playing a FF game after 10+ hours.

It was nothing to do with any of the other elements of the game. I mean, one of the more annoying things (to me) was htat no-one refers to Tidus by name, yet Tidus refers to the other characters by name. That annoyed me, but not to the point where I'd stopped the game - I was too busy having fun with the battle system.

Fast forward to last weekend. I had lent my cousin my copy of FFX, because he was wanting some new games to play. He was reporting some problems with the disc, and couldn't get past a certain point in the intro of the game. So I decided, while I was at my cousins place, to give the game a shot - to see just how bad it was.

I literally sat there stunned at just how I actually found enjoyment out of it.

The cheesy opening, the voice acting, the movements of the characters, the CG cutscenes...I'd never felt this way about an FF game before. Usually, I enjoy the games, but for some reason, I just sat there, dumbfounded at how I actually did find enjoyment in it.

Don't get me wrong though - there were some cool elements in the game that still held up. The narration from Tidus about the world as you're moving to a Blitzball stadium was neat, and the fact that there was a scene where Tidus had to fight his way into the stadium amongst many, many fans (not as in physically fight, he had to push his way in), also neat. Then there's "To Zanarkand" - the opening piano music (not sure about spelling), which still holds up well.

Eventually, the game did freeze, so his point was proven. He also had a copy of Final Fantasy XII, which I then promptly put in. I found myself digging the game...

This happen to anyone else? I'd love to hear some stories...

I see what you mean. Sometimes it isn't nostalgia that is the problem but game taste itself.

One of the site's forefathers.

Play fighting games!

I posted here before, but it never made it past the processing phase.

What I said is that I now get what you were saying darth about the hilarious voice acting like in HOTD2.

So bad, so wrong, yet so funny.

Really Iga?

Perhaps that's another reason too Punk.

To be fair, the voice acting in FFX isn't that bad - it's just that one scene...or whenever Yuna speaks.

Though trust me, it's not HOTD 2 level.
