Question to GG. So what will you be doing on the 18th when us NA guys are playing the system. Are you going to be eating up impressions from everyone, asking us a bunch of questions. Are you going to get angry and bitter like I do when I cant get a game I want early.

Not much, just soaking it all in and enjoy reading your stuff.

I'm a Euro, we are used to getting everything late. I will probably give you a middle finger gif, but only in jest.

EDIT:

Also, I'm not that jazzed by the games so far, it's all good but not must have IMO. Pikmin 3 is must have and that is delayed to spring. I'm still waiting for the big games to be announced like next zelda, mario, metroid, endless ocean, retro game, monolithsoft game etc.

I would also like some more FPS.

Is the new Metro still coming out on the U?

If so, I may get that version...if I get the game. I have yet to get into the original, but what I did see quickly after installing it looked really good. Half Life-ish.

They stopped work on the Wii U version but may return to it later.

Also they cancelled the multiplayer entirely.

I know what I'll be doing. I'll read some impressions, respond with "Cool. Look forward to getting one myself in the future.", then I'll go back to playing Halo 4 and/or Black Ops 2.

Or both at the same time while drinking Mountain Dew.

You know it Bro.

I'm more interested in having a console that I can play independently of the TV more than anything else. Just the convenience of it all.

If I can rig it so I can take it up to bed then turn it off wirelessly with the Wii U pad power button, roll over and sleep.

Solid.

If I can't I can still play while the TV is used by others so still good.

I think PDP confirmed it would work with their wireless headset the other day. I would have to hunt down the story, which I cannot be bothered to do.

EDIT: Yeah confirmed, PDP says when you have their headset hooked up via usb on wii u you get wireless sound.

Otherwise you just plug your headset into the wii u pad headphone jack which will be right in front of you anyway.

Wii U Audio Output Problem

"Uses six-channel PCM linear output via HDMI port, or analogue output via the AV Multi Out connector."

So you need an HDMI input on your receiver for digital sound otherwise it's DPL2?

Uncompressed 6-Channel PCM is the optimum for quality, but many AV receivers that are a bit older don't support the standard. So it's like they are supporting the current and future standard but forgetting about those of us with old receivers. HDMI has higher bandwidth than optical so it can allow for uncompressed audio codecs like Dolby True HD, DTS-MA, and PCM.

Optical is legacy and outdated. HDMI is the current standard and required if you want uncompressed audio or 7.1 surround. So the Wii U sound output is actually very good but not for older home theatre systems.

From what I'm reading an adaptor cable can't and won't be sold. In order for the system to output multichannel audio through a toslink (optical or coaxial) cable it would have to support some sort of compression format other than outputting PCM. The Wii U doesn't do that.

Found a converter but they are not cheap

"This unique HDMI distribution amplifier will directly pass HDMI and convert HDMI audio to Optical 5.1 Digital Audio Optical and L/R Stereo audio."

Been doing some reading on the Wii U sound issue for older receivers.

There is a way to receive lossless PCM to a sound receiver without an HDMI input.

For older receivers you need a Multichannel Analog cable.

And you need to select Bitstream.

You need analog inputs on your receiver and would need to get a Wii U audio/video cable with these extensions. It would give you the PCM lossless better quality sound - better quality than through optical or coaxial cables (which are only capable of 2 channel PCM) according to these links.

But these articles are based on you having a Player that has Internal decoding capability.

The info says "In order to utilize Linear PCM through HDMI your Player must be able to decode the formats Internally."

Linear PCM is used when the audio is decoded inside the Player first, and then sent to the Receiver.

So the Wii U must be decoding the audio for HDMI PCM so it could support the decoding of analog audio output too. This is the official line from Nintendo:

"Wii U uses six-channel PCM linear output via HDMI port, or analogue output via the AV Multi Out connector."

So it's possible that the AV Multi Out connector could support analogue Linear PCM and you would get lossless Wii U audio. Basically wait and see if there is a Wii U multi-channel analogue cable released. Check the back of your system.

If it has something like this you should be okay.

EDIT: Now someone is telling me Wii U only has 2 channel analog output, I'm investigating this. Please hold...

....okay, I've looked at 13 plus articles now and nowhere does it state that the analog output is only 2 channel, I keep coming up with that statement above again and again.

If Wii U uses Linear PCM the audio is decoded inside the system first, so if the AV Multi Out connector gets a RCA multi-out cable, it should work.

Otherwise you will need to either buy a new receiver or get a converter like this:

The Octava

Price: $169

Better off just buying a new reciever. You can get a nice HDMI reciever for around $300 these days.

Agree but can't buy new HTR and Wii U and games just don't have that in budget.

Looks like 2 channel stereo because I'm reading Wii U does not even support  DPLII they have completely avoided paying Dolby Labs  a single penny, good job Nincheapdo.

EDIT*

Now I looked more it appears any Stereo signal can be decoded to PL2 so at least we have that.

So rather than just using a $20 RCA cable to hook your Wii U up for lossless LPCM sound, it's better to spend $300 for a new system?

Okay McDuck. lol

Pretty far from rich though...I need to stop spending so much on gaming actually. After the Wii U, I need to cut spending waaaay down.

Found more converters, cheaper this time, $128

These will require your system to have these ports:

http://www.ambery.com/2hddodtsdihd.html

LPCM Digital Audio Decoder

This HDMI audio converter decodes the embedded LPCM digital audio from the HDMI output from PS3, Blue-ray, HD DVD player, HD cable box, DTV and so on into multi-channel surround sound in analog format for older non-HDMI home AV receiver, preamp or amplifier equipments.

User can fully enjoy the original digital audio content with all sonic details that the studio originally made for the HD movie. The decoded analog audio output from this device produces an accurate duplicate of sound which is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master, so listening at home is the ultimate home cinema experience.

This innovative HDMI digital audio converter can deliver high-quality digital audio with 7.1 and 5.1 discrete channels (Front Left, Front Right, Center, Rear Left, Rear Right, Left surround/Right surround and Low-Frequency Effects) to deliver a directional and more realistic effect. With the new lossless technology from Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio, the listener hears exactly what was captured during the recording and mastering process.

This HDMI audio converter also supports all 2-Channel PCM audio, compressed bitstream audio like Dolby Digital AC-3, DTS, DTS 5.1/7.1 and DSD through its optical Toslink output.

Not sure that will work thats analog, I think the output for multi channel is only digital on Wii  U  but we won't know because they will never tell us  just have to wait until its out and see. I will most likely just hook it up HDMI and hope my reciever can decode it.
