I bought a 3D TV cause it was on sale for like $80. 3DTV is like an old Game Boy compared to a PS4 in comparison to what VR is like.

I don't like that Sony is thinking about making a PS4.5 at all. This is a move just for VR, which may blow up in their face.

You're going to make PS4 owners feel jipped by releasing a slightly upgraded system now, on top of charging $400 for a VR headset....I mean this is SEGA like here.

See, this is what happens when you enter a generation WAY too late with underpowered hardware (all three are underpowered). If PS4, Xbone, and Nintendo HD would have come out in a normal cycle, like around 2010 or 2011, they would all be ready to get replaced this year or next! Then, the VR could just be a natural extension to the PS5 gen!  Instead, you waited too long and people just got into your hardware a few years ago and now its going to need to be UPGRADED and REPLACED because it can't keep up with tech and PC. Not a good move.

Preach. Agreed.

Will you need a 4K TV to use the upgraded PS4...? Probably.

$1000 for TV + $400 for PS4.5 + $500 for VR = R U Fucking Kidding?

That is a valid and important distinction. You got a good deal on it, I would have bought the same at that price and I hate 3D.

Thought I'd bring up the Sulon Q, regarding specs required to run VR.  The Sulon Q is an AMD powered AR and VR headset that has all the required hardware incorporated in the headset like Microsoft's hololens.  It's also much less powerfull than the minimum specs required for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

Copied from Sulon's official Press kit:

Hardware

AMD FX-8800P processor at up to 35W with Radeon™ R7 Graphics leveraging AMD’s Graphics Core Next architecture

4 compute cores and 8 GPU cores unlocked through Heterogeneous System Architecture (HAS)

Sulon Spatial Processing Unit (SPU)

Memory

8 GB DDR3L Memory

Storage

256 GB SSD

Display

2560x1440 OLED display at 90 Hz

110-degree Field-of-View

The CPU punches just above the laptop versions of the i5-5000 range, while the exact GPU isn't known at the moment.  resolution is actually higher than that of both the Rift and PSVR, so computational power will need to be spread more thin as well.

So what do you guys think?  Will it underperform, or are Oculus and HTC aiming too high?

Lol I played like 3 games on it.

Can you still use it like a normal TV?

Salient point!

LOL I wasn't trying to make a point, it just popped back into my head that Vader got that TV and then Sony seems to have stopped doing 3DTV games?

Sony stops supporting all peripherals after a few months. I would fear VR would be the same.

I like to think that Sony and MS heard about how powa-ful the NX is going to be, so decided to release more powa consoles to phase Nintendo into irrelevance, again. It's a solid plan Nyaa

So PSVR is the only VR platform expected to be successful, say analysts. And contrary to the naysayers, PSVR is selling out on website pre-orders.

So what now? What if it is successful? Do you still expect it to be a fad or limited use etc?

But Move is making a comeback, so you will get your moneys worth and you also presumably have the Move camera which you wont have to re-buy. So it has got extended support.

I wonder how VR would be controlled if the wiimote never happened.

Just because its "selling out" means nothing. Every new console "sells out" too...doesn't mean its going to be a hit that sticks. Of course all the early adopters and Sony fanboys are going to scoop it up, as well as people looking to flip it on ebay.

The word fad and VR should never be uttered in the same sentence. Its stupid. This is a revolution of technology. This is not a 3D bullshit that we have had since the 1950s. This is not some waggle stick that grandmothers will like to play with. This is the next major step in human technology. This is bigger than games, bigger than movies, bigger than just entertainment. There is zero chance VR fails, the only question is how long before it becomes a standard device in every walk of life.

Something I found noteworthy about the current 3 big players in consumer grade VR headsets:  PSVR is the only one that aims for VR to be a social thing, and it's apparent in the hardware design.  While Oculus and HTC's headsets need to be strapped securely in place like diving goggles, PSVR looks more like a hat.  Not only does it look much more confortable, with no risk of returning to our shared reality with a racoon print around the eyes from having the vizor pressing up against your face, it also looks like something you could (relatively) easily pass around during a game night with friends.
