Marathon was like Halo. Operation Flashpoint had all those elements, and used them better than Halo. Apart from the last point about the AI (which I don't agree with), then yeah those things were actually pretty new for consoles but those often aren't the main points brought up (they always have to begin with the factually incorrect controller bullshit, and broad revisionist or ignorant statements about the genre). Which was what I did in my original post, for obvious reasons.

Bungie made Marathon so I would assume there would be some similarities but its also safe to assume the used what they learned there to make a much better game.

THIS is like Halo?!

LOL!Ok it has open battles and vehicles so you are right about that. It is missing the fun gameplay, the fast moving action. The incredible movie like spectacle of it all. The music. The graphics. Shield generated health which changed FPSs forever. Only two weapons at a time, again chaged FPSs forever.

There is a reason history will remember Halo and totally forget Operation Flashpoint. (I am sure it is a very interesting cool game, still not Halo.)

I never said Operation Flashpoint was like Halo. You rattled off a list of things, I pointed you to a game that had and used those things better than Halo, while also supplying you with a game that was like Halo; which you also requested.

And Wolfenstein is like Doom, Doom is the game that matters. Same situation here. If your only example for a game like Halo is Bungie's first game then Halo is pretty much extremely original.

If a game is very much like another game, it's extremely original? Okay then... Also, unlike Marathon (which the press apparently aren't aware even exists) Wolfenstein still gets talked about regularly, so that's not a good comparison at all.

Change that to "Bungie is pretty much extremely original" and then you might have a point; though I would further ammend that to was and not is.

Also, Bungie's first game is nothing like Halo. Or Marathon. Nyaa

Feel my balls:

  • Fable 2.....bigger and incorporated many ideas cut from the original.
  • Perfect Dark 1....I consider Goldeneye to be in this series with PD Zero. Obviously PD was the best.
  • Super Mario 3D World....first modern 3D Mario to FEEL like the old NES/SNES games.
  • Zelda: A Link To The Past....because it stands the test of time & the newer games can't match the magic of the dated N64 titles.
  • Metroid Prime....one of the greatest, perfectly paced, most atmospheric games ever made.
  • Harvest Moon A Wonderful Life....because its the only one I played.
  • Pikmin 2....biggest game in the series and better.
  • Mass Effect 2....one of the best games ever made, perfect blend of action and RPG.
  • Elder Scrolls 3....because Morrowind had the most interesting world to explore.
  • Gran Turismo 2....20 times bigger than the original, amazing for a PS1 game and was still fresh.
  • Grand Theft Auto Vice City.....love the 80's vibe, best soundtrack in the series by far. Best main character.
  • Call of Duty 4....the last one that was fresh and innovated at all.
  • Silent Hill 1.....the scariest game in the series.
  • Resident Evil remake....old school RE perfected.
  • Castlevania Symphony of the Night....one of the best if not THE best 2d side scrollers ever.

Apparently it's this.

"The game featured twenty levels, culminating in the city of Baghdad with the final enemy being a giant Saddam Hussein head. It also came with a glossary of military terms and trivia which was needed in order to bypass the copy-protection in the game, and authentic maps of the Kuwaiti Theater of Operations."

Sounds amazing.

More:

  • Tomb Raider 2....really close between this, the 1st game, and the 2013 game. TR2 was the best old school TR.
  • Uncharted 2....on a whole new level compared to 1 and 3. Perfect pacing, great environments.
  • Final Fantasy 7....fuck the haters, its still the best. The Materia system added strategy and the summons were incredible.
  • Jak & Daxter 1....this one is 100% platformer and the world is better.
  • Ratchet & Clank 2.....took the greatness of the original and built on it with insane weaponry and great comedy.
  • Hitman 2.....best story, best levels, best music of the series.
  • Ass Creed 2.....biggest gameplay leap in the series, best character, best setting, was still fresh.
  • Sonic Adventure....because the old Sonics aren't as fun as you remember, and the new ones are horrible.
  • Star Fox Adventures...because it was the last Rare/Nintendo collaboration Sad
  • Bioshock 1.....you can't beat underwater cities with flying apple drones.

Let's see

  • Harvest Moon: Magical Melody - It is the "greatest hits" of the series. It brings back the best of each game that came before, added some great new features. Art style kind of sucked ass, but it was a small price to pay.
  • Super Castlevania IV -  Solid action, excellent controls, beautiful music and difficulty that ramps up perfectly make this about the best 2-D action game ever made.
  • Super Mario World - The cape rules all. Best 2-D platforming ever. And Star Road and those "Special" levels.... so good.
  • Final Fantasy V - 22 job classes? Yes please. 26 jobs in the GBA version? Fuck yes please!
  • Dragon Quest 8 - Level 5 at their very best. The generic save the world and the princess story has never been so polished, and no jRPG world as ever been so rich and deserves to be explored more.
