He does the music for all of Miyazakis Ghibli films. There was a huge concert a couple of years ago, I have the dvd.
Okay finished watching the film.
It's a bit of a disappointment actually. It's beautiful to look at though.
They play it straight as if what would ACTUALLY happen if little people existed and had to steal to live.
It all gets rather boring and there is no impetus in the script, it goes nowhere. It's 1 and a half hours long where most Ghibli films are at least half an hour longer.
You know when you watch a film and it just unexpectedly ends and you think "Huh, that's it?"
Well that is this film. It needs a rewrite, needs a villain, needs a chase, needs a motive, needs a good ending to work towards. Needs conflict.
Also the music is okay but...... they repeat the same music track several times during the movie.
The best thing about the film is a fat cat that could be mistaken for Totoro.
They have expertly captured the mannerisms and movement of a cat very well and this lumbering, cute beast, if made the star of the film would have made it 20X better.
That cat needs to look after its whiskers better, but looks quite awesome.
They do occasional stuff like hiding in reeds whilst a giant evil racoon moves by but they don't have the sense of wonder that other Ghibli films have. For instance when Ashitaka goes through the forest in Princess Mononoke, they need that kind of sequence.
So in other words my prediction of "meh" actually turned out to be true.
Looks like I can predict everything Japanese, which reminds me...I need to finish off those avatars.
Look how badass this cat is though. I love the animation of him running.

I take it I've now seen the best part of the film?

Well, Ghibli have a history of doing cats and making them FUCKING AWESOME. Case in point:
FUCK YEAH CATBUS

Hmmm, best part of the film, maybe. There is a bit near the end when she becomes friends with the cat. That's decent. But yeah the whole film is on a cruise control to nowhere.

I hate the Catbus
Totoro seems like a well measured and beautiful film, then a bright orange bus made of a cat appears and flies about.
I really liked the cat story in Whisper of the Heart and I wished they would make that into a film. And they sort of did in the Cat Returns which I know Yoda loves. I like it but it's a lesser Ghibli film.
I really fear for the studio now Miyazaki is so damned old and Takahata is older. The films from other directors like the Cat Returns or Arrietty, Tales from Earthsea are all like shadows of Ghiblis best. I look forward to Mamoro Hosoda's animations now, after Summer Wars and the Girl Who Leapt Through Time.
Also Katsuhiro Otomo, Akira and Steamboy. But he seems to wait a decade between making films.

Not just Japan, you also did the NPC numbers, remember? But now we can only verify your Japanese predictions, because NPD does not publish the numbers anymore.
So go on and finish your avatars, do your worst.

I remember doing them, but didn't think I won all that often.

You won all the bets. We only had 3 bets, but you won them all.
I find the U.S voice actress for Arrietty obnoxious and bratty. But by God, what is this travesty:
I watched it again.
You have to see Ghibli films in HD on a large over 40 inch TV.
Whilst the script is a damp squib, the little details of arrietty make the film worth watching, the detail, the little things like the leaves rustling or the wind blowing. Those tiny moments Ghibli is so good at catching.
