The Squid Research Lab can confirm that Inkopolis Plaza is no longer the central hub of Inkling culture. Apparently a new location within Inkopolis known as “Inkopolis Square” is now the most popular area for young Inklings. Many new businesses have opened shop in Inkopolis Square, and it is only two subway stations away from Inkopolis Plaza. We at the Squid Research Lab were surprised to learn that the center of Inkling culture has changed locations in such a short amount of time, but perhaps there is something to be learned about the Inkling way of life in all this. Or maybe we’re just thinking about it too hard.



A Squid Research Lab special report:

As we suspected, Turf War is still the most popular sport among Inklings. The basic rules of this sport remain the same–two teams of four Inklings compete to cover the largest area of ground with their ink color within the allotted time. Inklings still eat, sleep, and breathe Turf War, and the sport still drives the direction of fashion, art, and language for Inkling culture.




We have found photographic evidence of one of the new battle stages in Splatoon 2. Inklings call this new area “The Reef”, presumably because it’s a popular area to hang out when it’s not being used for Turf War. The Reef is located a few blocks from Inkopolis Square, and it’s home to some of the most popular boutique shops in the city.



Our research indicates that the mid-battle stage map has changed a bit. Apparently Inklings can press the X Button to view the map at any time during a battle. Once the map is open, they can then press the directional buttons and the A Button to Super Jump to a teammate. Each teammate is assigned to a different directional button, as is the spawn point. The map also features a cursor that can be moved by tilting the controller.


While an Inkling is on the ground, swinging a roller weapon will still result in a standard horizontal swing. Please see the attached footage for a comparison of roller swing techniques.



This is the Splat Charger in Splatoon 2. Its design has changed a bit from the original game, as have the designs of the Splat Roller and the Splattershot. These classic weapons are still among the most popular with Inklings.



Charger weapons have gained a new ability since our original analysis of them. Inklings can now store their charge for a short time by entering squid form. Then, when they return to Inkling form, they can instantly unleash a charged shot. Very impressive.


The tried-and-true Splattershot hasn’t changed drastically, so veteran Inklings will feel right at home with this weapon. We can also report that all previously existing weapon types, including Splatling and Slosher weapons, will appear in Splatoon 2. Stay tuned for further developments.



Interestingly enough, all of the special weapons that appear in Splatoon 2 are brand new. We’ve been able to secure an image of one of the new special weapons, but we’re unsure of its name. To use it, an Inkling targets as many opponents as he or she can before firing. Once the weapon is fired, four homing missiles are launched at each targeted opponent.



This special weapon is called the Sting Ray. It fires a ray of pressurized ink that can shoot through walls and travel long distances, splatting any enemy players it touches Once activated, it’s very difficult to change the direction of the ray.



This special weapon is the Inkjet. It allows its user to hover in the air, and features a blob launcher that can be used to shoot ink blobs at enemies below. It seems to be a very powerful weapon, but it also leaves its user rather exposed. Once this special weapon runs out, the Inkjet explodes, sending its user to the exact point they activated the special from.



This special weapon is called Splashdown. An Inkling who activates it will jump into into the air and then strike the ground, sending an explosion of ink onto nearby players and surfaces. This special weapon can also be activated mid-Super Jump, creating an explosion of ink upon landing. This technique may be very useful when coming to the aid of a teammate who is under attack.



I nearly overlooked it, but I’ve noticed the existence or a new type of subweapon. This new subweapon is called the Curling Bomb. I was shocked to learn that the Inklings are familiar with the sport of curling, which may be the greatest discovery of all. Once deployed, the Curling Bomb slides across the ground, bouncing off walls.

So the stingray is like a miniature Killer Whail?  Bah.  I'm sure these specials will grow on me, but they seem a lot more convulted than those of the original.  Also, snipers will really become a force to recon with thanks to them keeping their charge.  Just look at how overpowered that gif makes it look.

They're including de Blob 2 as the single player campaign.

No word on a campaign. I'm assuming there isn't one and I'm fine with that.

I think it's more like a slow laser beam that cuts through things. The dualies dodge move is going to be super unfair and annoying. I hope they nerf it in an update. Also rollers being able to throw ink as far as a gun now.... kinda unfair.

Played the testfire, while it's good, because Splatoon is good. It felt like "hooray...they made Splatoon, but like, again this time" which part of the appeal for me was how fresh and inventive Splatoon felt, this felt more like Splatoon 1.5, than some dramatic improved sequel. Doesn't help that I'll have to pay for a bullshit subscription just to play it online.

It's only 2 maps in the testfire. Hopefully there is more new stuff but it's like Mario kart for me, I just need new maps.

About nine months have passed since the final Splatfest.


Twilight lowers its curtain on Inkopolis. Neon signs paint the dusk in brilliant shades of green and pink. The Squid Sisters dance on, as though driven by the Inkling love of battling for turf.


Memories such as these linger, vividly etched in my mind, but feel too like remnants of a long-forgotten past.


It happened the night the final Splatfest came to an end.


The showdown of Callie versus Marie ended in victory for Marie, but there was no ill will between the two. The girls left the studio arm in arm, smiling and laughing as they always had. The bond between them would continue, unbroken, for years to come.


Or so it seemed at the time...​

I limes moray towers. Sad I was no big fan of how big and open the maps in the testfire were.  They were all lacking in flavour if you ask me.  I hypothized that perhaps it was a deliberate move to keep the testfire accessible to new players, but if they're going to revamp old maps to be more open as well...  I guess Nintendo know what they're doing.

uh there are big changes coming. The point sensor is now active for a time beyond straight after it's thrown and if you walk into the area  you get marked. It's  already bad enough when you get put up against a team with two tracking specials, you spend the whole match as an easy target. Also now you can plant two mines and the impact area is bigger. I always found mines a little  unfair to use as people could repeatedly dodge them even if they walked right over them while chasing you.

GI: Salmon Run Is Surprisingly Difficult


In Salmon Run, you work together in teams of up to four to collect Salmonid eggs. The mode is split up into three waves. Each wave gives the team a quota of eggs to collect, as well as a time limit. The goal is to defeat enemies, causing them to drop eggs. You must then haul those eggs back to the basket. If you meet your quota (and you're still alive) when time expires, all remaining enemies retreat and you move on to the next round.

The first time we started up, the difficulty was set to 5% out of a possible 100%. Despite this, some of the boss characters proved tricky for us to take down. The first heavy Salmonids we encountered had armor in the front, so we had to distract it out front while one of our Inklings flanked it to blast ink at its exposed backside. While that creature did little to trouble us, the two of these creatures in tandem served as an effective distraction. While all fire was focused on this creature, an influx of minions surrounded two of our players, incapacitating them and putting our team in dire straights early on in our first attempt. When Inklings take too much damage in Salmon Run, they can be revived by a teammate shooting them with ink.


After we took out the two heavies and deposited the eggs into the basket, another boss character emerged. This time, it was in the form of a tall, slender creature approaching from the shoreline. I quickly swam through the ink layered on the ground to see that he was just pots stacked on top of each other. I began blasting away at the bottom pot, causing it to disappear and the creature to shrink. I continued taking the pots out from under him until he was reduced to nothing, not unlike how I used to do to the Pokey enemies with Yoshi in Super Mario World. With the second boss out of the way, we cleaned up the rest of the minion Salmonid that surrounded us until the timer ran out for the wave.


Wave two followed much in the same way, but the bosses were much more difficult. The first boss to emerge was a massive metal eel. At first, the eel seems invulnerable to our attacks. The eel rains down hostile ink, taking out some of our teammates. Once the eel serpentines its way past you, however, we can see that it is being driven by a Salmonid creature. We immediately blast the operator, destroying the eel and dropping eggs. Another boss appears, this time with two trashcans attached to the side. The boss hovers over the battlefield, seemingly invincible. Suddenly the trashcan opens and it rains down blobs of ink onto us, taking out all by one of us. While this boss spelled our doom in each of our last two attempts, we learn that you can take him out by tossing bombs into the open trashcans.


Though enemies appeared in greater numbers in wave three, we were in a rhythm and took the wave as a victory lap. This wave was particularly easy since we had all saved our ultimates (each player gets two total ultimate uses to deploy over the course of the three waves). We retrieved the rest of the eggs and wiped out the rest of the enemies to claim our victory.


Following our triumph at 5%, we wanted to put Salmon Run's difficulty to the limit. The Nintendo representative giving our demo said that 40% was the highest difficulty people on the Nintendo E3 team could beat. We decided to set the difficulty on 100% just to see how overwhelming it can get. Right from the start, a huge group of blindingly fast Salmonid creatures unlike anything we saw in our 5% run swarmed us and annihilated our entire team.


Salmon Run is a short, but fun co-op mode. I had a lot of exciting moments spread across the three brief rounds, and working together with a full group of four was a blast. I was worried going in that the mode would prove too easy for seasoned Splatoon players, but clearly that is not the case.

During our hands-on with Splatoon 2, we also learned that Nintendo is certainly planning big Salmon Run events, and adding more maps besides the Spawning Grounds. This was great to hear, as without additional content, once Salmon Run is “solved,” so-to-speak, it could easily suffer from a lack of a variety.


When asked if Salmon Run events would take the place of Splatfest, the Nintendo representative simply said they “weren’t discussing Splatfest at this time.”

This is the main reason I haven't bought ARMS.  I know ARMS will go unplayed the moment Splatoon2 hits.  Hopefully we'll be able to get some VGPress salmon runs going.  I'm also hopefull that my gamer mate will pick up a Switch (for 'his kids', of course) and this when it releases.
