From ONM

What is MotionPlus like? It works, that's all you need to know. I knows where your arm is and how you're holding the Remote. It knows how strong your swing of the Remote is, and it knows whether you're going for a vertical, horizontal, diagonal slice, and everywhere in between.

So it's a very different game from the first Red Steel, that's for sure. Using the Nunchuck to move, you can still point at the screen and press B to shoot, but it is clear that gunplay won't be the main attraction.

Ubisoft wants to make game progression as non-linear as possible, but is also very insistent that Red Steel 2 is not an open world game. Many of the stages are closed-off affairs offering little escape from the action, which keeps the temp up. There are different paths to take along the way, and you'll move on through the game via several different hub worlds, each more challenging than the last.

There are side quests to complete, collectables, combos, Finish Kills and other moves to learn too.

I dont know guys. As someone who liked the first game and wanted its flaws fixed this news is just weird to me. It's completely new game. They should just call it something else and then do a proper sequel to the first game. It sounds cool but its very, very different.

GAF info from ONM etc

"There's an interview at the end where they state you can focus on gunning, but you'll change back to the sword because of how much fun it is to use and how much better it works in many situation. Lots of fights are close quarters and don't give you a lot of room to stand back gunning, plus you cant 'defend' with the gun, and a lot of enemies are wearing armour."

"MotionPlus is the beating heart of Red Steel 2" - Creative Director Red Steel 2

ONM: Will you use MotionPlus to introduce non-combat uses of the technology?

JV: Oh yeah, as many as we can get into the game. [...] We want people to manipulate a lot of things. We call them 'game breakers' - the chance to do something cool that's outside the core gameplay.

ONM: What's it like working with MotionPlus?

JV: It's incredibly satisfying - really exciting. I've been working in games for 12 years and this is the first time that I feel we're going to give the fans something really cool that they've never seen before. And I genuinely mean that. It's not just marketing bullshit - this is something new that you've never done before and it's really fun.
It's a great feeling to be able to say that.

- Game is build around MotionPlus (M+ made it possible to make the game they wanted to make with that kind of gameplay, and "shift the game away from the shooting side of things"). That is also why production began when they first got their M+ dev kits.

- Seems there will also be some kind of "backtracking", where you can enter previously inaccessible areas when you have gotton new abilities and such.

- ONM seems to think that this will be the showcase MotionPlus title for the "hardcore". Perhaps even demostrating how MotionPlus could transform core gaming. "A new era for Wii gaming? You bet."

My comp ran it at 10FPS but it still looked way cool. Thank god the colours are stronger than those bad scans. Now I'm sort of excited. What was that Destination Playstation thing at the front end? Is that the name for the music?

I wasn't a fan of the trailer; it didn't show anything.

Tell me to get back to rewriting this site so it's not horrible on mobile

It said Destination Playstation at the front of the trailer and the rumour is that Sony is showing off their motion sensing device at E3 and have pushed developers to include it. Could it now be a multiformat game?

I seriously doubt it.

"- main character is the only one able to accomplish the task of saving the world "

that would be a bullet point in anything OTHER than a video game.

Okay I have my issue of NOM here, first mag I've bought in 3 years?

Firstly the real screens look quite similar to the trailer. It's not as smooth or clear of jaggies and the lighting isn't quite as bloomy. But its still (very) close and definetely realtime. There are some concept art pics in the mag, uh not as lush or nice as the RS1 concept art. From the looks of things they are playing out the desert western town theme. Things are quite barren and stark, industrial too. Sad

"Red Steel 2 had already been years in the making before Ubisoft got their hands on motionplus."

But were so pumped about the add on that the project only really came alive with it.

You start the game as a nameless stranger, skilled in combat. Your main adversary owns the town of Aldera and runs it how he chooses so the stage is set for revelations and battles. It seems that you can upgrade your skills and in a metroid like fashion return to old areas to unlock new areas. It has a lot of open world elements, but is not an open world game. Motionplus is being used for all sorts of other interactions too.

"It has the potential to be utterly spectacular"

Red Steel 2 has been in pre-production since RS1 came out but they were looking for something new to break out in design terms so production begain in earnest last summer post-E3.

About gun use, they dont want to foce people to use guns or swords, but let you be creative in choosing your weapons, but the arenas can be small and hectic and you can't defend with a gun, so you may inevitably end up using the sword.

There are many hub world sections, its not openworld but something halfway between it seems.

We knew all this already I guess.

Were they working on this version of RS2, though, or the cancelled one?
