Thor: Tales of Asgard - Marvel - Animated

Story: The young Norse god Thor embarks on a quest with his brother Loki to find and recover a legendary sword.

You would think Young Thor would be a gimmicky unsatisfying kiddie joke, but you'd be wrong. Based on one of the comic book tales, Tales of Asgard is Marvels best animated movie, showing how a young Thor and Loki went out on an epic quest to retrieve a legend and faced down the Snow Giants. There's a touch of swashbuckling Disney to this film and it complements the live action movies too.

All Star Superman - USA - Animated

Story: While saving the crew of the first manned mission to the sun, Superman is poisoned by solar radiation. Dying, he decides to fulfill his lifelong dreams, while still saving the Earth from various threats. But when Lex Luthor reveals his latest plot to control the world, Superman must use his remaining strength to stop him.

Touching, thoughtful but ultimately still entertaining, All Star Superman is one of the very best animated DC Movies and probably the best Superman film since the first two live action ones. It feels very much like a classic, on-song take on Clark and his troubles.

Green Lantern First Flight - DC Animated movie

Story: Test pilot Hal Jordan finds himself recruited as the newest member of the intergalactic police force, The Green Lantern Corps.

Miles better than the dreadful live action movie, First Flight is still a lesser DC animated movie, which felt strangely flat to me. Yet it is decent and watchable and there's nothing particularly wrong with it. The follow up film: Emerald Knights is much better.

Superman vs The Elite - Animated - USA

Story: The Man of Steel finds himself outshone by a new team of ruthless superheroes who hold his idealism in contempt.

First thing's first, for some reason I found the art style in this movie to be very offputting. So offputting I couldn't get it out of my head for the first 40 minutes or so. The story is also completely predictable, so I really didn't enjoy this much. But putting that aside it's still a totally solid watch, even if you can see the ending a mile away.

Planet Hulk - Animated Movie

Story: The Incredible Hulk, ejected from Earth in a spaceship, crash-lands on a planet ruled by a tyrant, who forces him to fight in a coliseum against other powerful creatures. The Hulk reluctantly befriends the combatants on his team.

The second best Marvel Animated movie comes a very, very close second to Thor Tales of Asgard. This isn't the mindless "Hulk Smash" rubbish that has peppered vitually all Television and Live action Hulk related media. Here Hulk takes heavy inspiration from "Gladiator", forming bonds of friendship and loyalty to overthrow an empire.

Rating: A

Note: The Silver Surfer is missing from the movie because of the FOX exclusive deal on the Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer.

P.S The graphic novel is awesome, better than the movie even. Great art too.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 and 2 - DC Animated movies

Story: Batman has not been seen for ten years. A new breed of criminal ravages Gotham City, forcing 55-year-old Bruce Wayne back into the cape and cowl. But, does he still have what it takes to fight crime in a new era?

Based on the epic graphic novel by Sin City writer Frank Miller, TDKR redefined modern Batman and heavily influenced Tim Burtons film too. It's also influencing the upcoming Batman vs Superman movie. Dark and unrelenting, TDKR is DCs' most mature and violent work. It's built as an 80s movie like Robocop and that's why me and my best buddie loved it so much. The music is an unapologetic delicious homage to John Carpenter. Batman is heavy, clunky, more real. His bones creak, his mind ticks over and he becomes harder and even more unrelenting than the Batman we know and love. As two parts this is about 2 and a half hours worth of Batman goodness. If only they would make "the Dark Knight Strikes Again" too...

Rating: A+ (for animated superhero genre)

Trivia: Way back when, a live action movie starring Clint Eastwood was mooted, but turned down by Warner Bros.

Superman Unbound - DC - Animated movie

Story: Superman and Supergirl take on the cybernetic Brainiac, who boasts that he possesses "the knowledge and strength of 10,000 worlds."

Re-imagining the first meeting between Superman and Brainiac, Unbound is a solid but relatively flat movie up until an enjoyable end. If you don't know who Brainiac is, he's an aggressive AI Robot like dude who kidnaps planets and destroys worlds.

Is it the Deluxe edition?

14717572_201308190703.jpg

One thing I forgot to note, on most, if not all DC Animated movies the audio is geared towards home cinema systems. Watching in stereo the music is strangely muted in the background and you lose a lot of atmosphere. So if possible, 5.1 the sound.

The Darjeeling Limited - Wes Anderson - USA

Story:  A year after their father's death, three brothers (as played by Owen Wilson, Adrian Brody and Jason Schwartzmann) travel to India on a spiritual quest of sorts in an effort to mend their relationship, re-establish a bond with their mother (who abandoned them and moved to India), reach some kind of closure in respect to their father's passing and generally find some order and make some sense of their fucked up lives.

Review:  OK, after Rushmore, I thought I'd press on with another Wes Anderson epic.  While I personally don't think this is among his greatest masterpieces, it is still a great movie.  With the majority of it set in rural India, the bright colors and the settings are a perfect home for his personal sensibilities.  The characters are as oddball as ever, and as is the case with all WA films they are the main draw here especially as the performances are so brilliant.  The British invasion soundtrack with The Kinks et al is also very fitting and rather brilliant.  There are many WTF laugh out loud moments which come at you from out of nowhere and help endear the film to you.  I personally thought it was well worth watching, but as with my Rushmore review I feel I should include the usual disclaimers about the things a lot of people find annoying in Wes Anderson's movies.  Everything is very twee and very precious.  It all has a kind of dollhouse feeling.  The humor is very wry and (not trying to be clever or anything but) some people will not think it's funny and will find it annoying.

Superman Batman: Public Enemies - USA - Animated movie

Story: When Lex Luthor gets elected US President, he uses the threat of an oncoming kryptonite meteor striking Earth as a rationale to frame Superman.

This is a genuine Sam Liu slugfest. Everything here is fast and furious as bad guys and good guys from the Justice League converge to take down the Bats and Supe. Muscles are pumped, fists fly and lots of stuff gets smashed. You'll get more out of it if you know your DC comics characters well, this is a fun popcorn movie where both characters play very well off each other.

Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox - USA - Original DC movie

Story: An alteration of the timeline for the superhero, The Flash, creates ripples that disastrously alters the Universe. The Flash must team with other heroes to restore the timeline.

From The Dark Knight Returns director Jay Olivera, this film both exceeded my expecations and happily sat near the top of the best Superhero movies of all time. A repeat viewing wasn't as fun when you knew what was going to happen - but it's still one of DCs' top productions and they keep on raising their game. While the live action guys take years to figure things out, the animation guys know what their doing like a well oiled machine. And may they keep doing it for many more years to come.

Justice League: Doom - USA - DC Animated movie

Story: A Mastermind steals confidential files  that Batman has compiled on the members of the Justice League, and uses their weaknesses

Based on the Tower of Babel storyline, this film brings out strong diversive differences between the Batman and everyone else. Sharp, clever and with a satisfying follow through, JL Doom is another great JL movie.

Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah - Japan - A piece of shit movie

So to get ready for Godzilla which I am going to see early on monday, I decided to watch an old Godzilla movie as I had not seen any. I looked online and saw that this one is one of the favorites, it has the three headed dragon dude which was the final boss in the NES game, my friend had it and wanted to watch it so it was chosen. What kind of horse shit is this. This is the kind of movie you find on sci-fi network at 2am in the morning. Everything is terrible, the acting, the directing, the story, the dialogue, the action, I will give a pass for the effects cause its made on the cheap but it's bad too. The movie jumps from scenes so irradically. Some scenes are there just to explicitly tell the audience over and over what is happening cause apparently everyone that watches these movies are stupid or something. "The UFO has to be a time machine." Next guy "A time machine?", next guy "So it's a time machine?!" next guy "Yes a time machine from the future. " next guy "From the future?" OMG shut the fuck up.

The plot is non sensical but I guess that is what I get when I watch a movie about dudes from the future who go back in time to create King Ghidorah so that it destroys Japan so that Japan doesn't become the strongest nation ever which causes the Japanese to awaken Godzilla who kills King but then Godzilla attacks Japan which makes them go back to the future to revive King bring him back in time to fight Godzilla who was revived in the first place to fight King, head full of fuck gif. It took forever for Godzilla to show up, I thought it would finally get good but it just became a series of repeated shots of Godzilla roaring and the two monsters shooting beams at each other while explosions went off. I wanted Godzilla to shoot a beam at me and melt me so I didn't have to watch anymore. Any episode of Power Rangers is better than this garbage.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - Wes Andreson - USA

This is a kind of mocumentary type film following the adventures of fictional sea life researcher and film-maker Steve Zissou (very loosely) based on Jean Jaques Cousteau.  Steve Zissou (the ever brilliant Bill Murray) is an aging sea-life researcher and film-maker who is about to go on a quest to find the mythical jaguar-shark which may or may not exist and which may or may not have killed his diving partner on their previous expedition.  On this journey he is joined by a merry band of completely oddball characters for crew members (Wilhelm Defoe brilliantly portrays a faithful sidekick with a serious crush on him, Owen Wilson playes a fan turn funder turn crew member who may or may not be Zissou's son from a passing fling, and many more wonderful and brilliantly acted characters).

Watching this film it is obvious that it was a labour of love for Wes Anderson.  Watching this film is also not very easy for everyone unless you are familiar with and OK with Wes Anderson's sensibilities and eccentricities.  Everything is clever, and ironic, and funny/sad and in relation to Cousteau's movies of the 60ies it walks a very fine line between homage and parody.  It's a great film and a lot of fun to watch but I wouldn't recommend it to everyone.  I can see how someone might feel it is just trying to be clever all the time.

The 70s Godzilla movies were classic. Loved it when the guy in the rubber Godzilla suit did karate. LOL I think me and my bro saw them all in the 80s.

Bugs these Wes Anderson film reviews always come with warnings? Is there a vocal contingent who don't like his style?

Well, let me just say that with a few exceptions, most of Wes Anderson's films haven't broken even at the box office.  So it's more like there is a very vocal minority of dedicated followers who love his work as opposed to the other way around.  As far as critics go, at first it was all "Wow this is so brilliant and fresh!" which suddenly turned towards "Yeah, same ole Wes Anderson" ... but the last couple got really good reviews again.

So to answer your question, there are a lot of people who don't like his style.  Personally, as long as he finds funding to keep making them, I'll be happy to watch them.
