I saw Jersey Boys, I've seen the play and thought it was fantastic. This is the story of Franky Valli and the Four Seasons. Basically it is like Goodfellas mixed with a musical. So I always knew it would make a great movie, this has Scorcesse written all over it. It takes place in Jersy, it has mobsters, it is about music and it has real life Joe Pesci, the actual person is a part of the story. But he had contract issues and so in comes Clint Eastwood, to do a musical, wasn't that a Simpsons joke once?
Eastwood plays this almost like a straight biopic, there is practically no musical like qualities in it which I guess would be a plus for some. The problem for me is that the energy the music brings mixed with the gangster story is what makes Jersey Boys work so well. This movie feels sort of lifeless at times which is the opposite of what it should have been. It isnt a serious drama either so it doesn't work on that level either.
That said the story is still so good that the movie works. It uses most of the lines from the play which was pretty hilarious at times and very well written. The music is fantastic if you enjoy their music, which I am a fan of oldies so I do. Then at the end of the movie, during the credits all of a sudden there is a giant musical number complete with dancers (Christopher Walken dacing too) and is a giant spectacle. Left me wondering why wasn't the whole movie like that?!
Still very entertaining but a pale version of the actual broadway show.

THE MONKEY KING - Hong Kong - Martial Arts Fantasy
Story: Tells the origin story of the fabled Monkey King from Chinese legend. From birth to his first rebellion against the Sky emporer
Sometimes crude, ridiculous and downright stupid in parts, on the whole this massive special effects movie pulls through as a solid piece of throwaway entertainment. Some of the effects are obviously worse than others, but in a film depicting the sky battles from famous paintings, this is about as good as you'll get for a proper Monkey King movie. Nowhere near as good as Journey Into the West (Stephen Chow - Kung Fu Hustle director)

SON OF BATMAN - Animated DC Comics
Story: R'as a Ghul gets bumped off by Deathstroke, so Talia sends the son she had with Bruce Wayne to live with Batman. Boredom ensues.
One of the worst DC animated movies, not bad on its own terms but woefully dull compared to other movies. You cannot bump the feeling that you should be watching other more interesting characters than baby batman with 'tude. Also features perhaps the worst voice acting of all time by Deathstroke, the main villain.

The Grandmaster - Hong Kong Martial Arts
Story: Yet another film that chronicles the life of the Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man from the 1930s in Foshan, his flight to Hong Kong after the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the events leading to his death.
What's this? Wong Kar-wai actually made a good film? I've seen several of his 'acclaimed' works before but never really taken to them. Consistency is something that grounds this movie, with bare minimal of his usual pretentiousness. Book ended by excellent Yuen Woo Ping fight scenes, initially cold, The Grandmaster follows through to the end to make a very satisfying experience. It does have one seemingly entirely superflous character though, the Razor.

Guardians of the Galaxy
Rating: A-
I saw Guardians, thought it was fantastic. Its missing elements like charactres and stories you care deeply for that keeps it from being an all time great. My favorite movies don’t just have big action, epic effects but they tell incredibly human stories in a fantastic setting like Star Wars and LOTR. Guardians is a great summer sci-fi epic but that is all it is, it is missing that heart (even though it has flashes of it, like the opening, Rocket’s speech, even the Groot stuff at the end). They had to tell this totally insane space story so I guess they figured comedy was more the way to go than try to get people to feel sad for talking raccoons and trees. Plus it is an origin story so as usual the events are usually by the book.
So what was great, THE SOUNDTRACK IS AMAZING!!!! Man what a great collection of oldies in there. The action is a visual feast. All the characters are great in their own way. Drax had me cracking up all the time. Rocket is probably the stand out character. Chris Pratt is a star in the making, he will explode this next year, he holds it all down. Good supporting cast, good villain, amazing locations. All in all it is one hell of a fun movie.
It is still so crazy to me that Marvel went all cosmic, they are straight up going all out with their entire universe. They finally explained the infinity gems! Thanos was so cool for the minute he was in. I have been reading a ton of Marvel comics due to the Unlimited deal so it was a real treat to read about Xandar and the Nova Corps and see them in action. I need to read more but some of the characters did seem different, specifically Drax and Gamorrah.
Like most marvel movies this is a movie every one can enjoy. It is a comic book movie, its funny, has great action and is one of the best movies to see this year.
I just saw Guardians of the Galaxy. I agree with what Vader wrote. Definitely a must see summer film.
Noah - Action, sci fi epic - USA
Story: The descendants of Cain and Seth, battle to secure ownership of the Ark, the Creators vessel to save all animals and kill all humans
A frankly quite weird, bizaare and offputting retelling of the biblical story, with stone giants laying the smack down on povery stricken humans. Some bizaare morality, some dislikable children - choosing to have insta-sex instead of saving their own brother for instance. And an ark that looks like it would never really float. Noah feels to me, like a real turkey, possibly the worst blockbuster film since Avatar.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Live action cartoon
This could have been horrible but instead its good, just good nothing special. The first TMNT movie was genius and had a level of depth to it that this movie never even comes close to approaching. This movie nails the turtles personalities; they are funny, an absolute joy to watch. Sadly the story is super generic evil villain plot bullcrap. Shredder is basically in the robot suit the whole movie and wants "power" for no real reason than to be evil. The foot clan is a bunch of generic dudes with guns, not ninjas, they look like Michael Bay movie rejects.
The movie stays surface deep telling you what the audience should be feeling rather than actually having scenes to make you feel that way. The turtles are not really given any room to grow as characters. The movie talks about Raphael being the rogue, any fan of TMNT knows this, but the movie has no scene where he actually runs off on the team or his hard headness causes any issues. Leonardo is said to be the leader, they all talk about it but he maybe has one moment where they make the point for him to be the leader. Show me dont tell me.
Also April O'Neil is basically the main character and she is terribly written into the turtles origin story by making the turtles her old pets and her dad the one who created them. William Fincher does a good job playing generic rich sleeze ball. Will Arnet is there to be Will Arnet which is fine by me cause he is cool. Splinter is amazing, needed more of him. The movie works when the action is flowinga and the Turtles are in their element cracking jokes and kicking ass. It is more of a cartoon than the first movie ever was, which is cool cause I would love to see the more crazy aspects of TMNT but the story needs to be good too. This new TMNT is a basic summer movie flick, its shallow but decent.

Yes her dad is a scientist and was in charge of the renaissance project, genetic testing on four turtles and a rat, named after renaissance artists. So she would visit the labs as a kid and feed the turtles pizza. There is a whole lot more, involving shedder and stuff but I will leave it at that.
Hmm, why mess with it when their history in the comics is so good?
Who does Goodman play?
