Seven Samurai (1954) - Japan

Story: Desperate farmers of Kana village pay Ronin Samurai in rice to defend their village from evil bandits.

It's taken a while to get to, but Seven Samurai has barely aged a day and can stand proud with modern Samurai films. Despite being an eye watering 3 and a half hour epic, it doesn't drag or feel long at all. And it's not constant fighting either, 2 and a half hours goes by with nary a fight. Seven Samurai is mostly a character piece, building slowly bonds of friendship and loyalty followed by a kick ass fight near the end.

We'll, there's an actual conflict between Splinter and Shredder.  In the comic, Shredder killed Splinters master, Hamato Yoshi.  The Nick show changes things slightly, but it's still way better than that.  In the Nick show, Splinter was Hamato Yoshi and Shredder killed his wife and kidnapped his child.

The 80s show Splinter was Hamato Yoshi. The original movies from back then Splinter was originally a rat that was owned by Hamato Yoshi.

The new movie should've stuck with that.

I watched the first episode of 80s TMNT last weekend with my nephews and Shredder did kill his master. I think? Or did he just disgrace Splinter? My mind is messed up now, thanks!

He might have killed his master I think both Shredder and Splinter trained under the same person if I remember correctly or I'm confusing that origin with the 2003 version.

FEARLESS DIRECTORS CUT - CHINA - MARTIAL ARTS BIOPIC

For the theatrical review see page 5 of this thread

Story: The rise and fall of Martial Arts school head Huo Yuanjia and how he battled for China against foreign powers

There's around 35 minutes of new footage in the directors cut and whilst most of it is solid and interesting it bogs the film down. Instead of being a fairly slick and breathless character piece/martial arts extravaganza, the extra footage makes it more of a biopic with some heavy handed morality and crude Chinese proverbs. Thankfully, the Blu Ray allows you access to 3 different cuts of this film and you can watch the directors cut, then choose not to, again.

I Frankenstein - Action - USA - Angels vs demons

Story: Frankenstein is made then rejected, then spends 200 years assing about in the mountains. Meanwhile demons want to find him and experiment on him so they can revive demons trapped in hell into human corpses.

I.... don't like Frankenstein. Possibly the biggest turkey of the year, I Frankenstein has a horribly vapid, generic plot, horrible casting, bad acting and is generally just baaaaaaaad. The only redeeming feature is seeing the blonde chick from the latest series of 24 looking hotter than ever.

I watched a really cool horror movie the other day. I guess its a few years old but not sure if anyone here has seen it.

Its The Lords of Salem, directed by White Zombie vocalist Rob Zombie, and stars his wife as the main character too. Very creepy, old school horror flick. I like it. Rob Zombie definitely has a talent for horror themes, be it in music or in film.

Batman Assault on Arkham - DC Animated movie

Story: A prequel to the Arkham video games but enjoyable regardless of any link to them. Amanda Waller sends the new Suicide Squad into Arkham to retrieve a knock list the Riddler has in his possession. Only Buttman gets in the way...

Fast and furious action/comedy hybrid is miles better than the boring Son of Batman movie. Whilst there's nothing deep here, it's nice to see a play on the villains perspective. Whilst it does riff on Justice League Unlimiteds' similar episode it's still good in its own right.

The Raid 2 - Will kick your ass so hard it will fly out of your face. Incredible action, good story, almost too much violence. Still super serious though, only for the most hardcore of action lovers. Rating: A-

I'm watching this right now and it's a snooze fest, worse than the first movie, totally boring story, boring acting grey colour palette and the action so far is crappy. I have an hour left of this.

The Raid 2: Thai Crime/action

Story: In the aftermath of the first films' events Rana goes deep undercover to cosy up to a mob boss' son.

One can only imagine the critics in the poster above were blind drunk or actually watching a completely different movie. The Raid 2 is super serious, super boring, with flat direction, flat acting and a flat script. Stretched out to a 2 and a half hour running time, there is only one good fight scene in the entire film. Everything else is a waste of time, the film barely even justifies each slice of action, let alone gives you someone/thing to root for. At least the first film was wall to wall action, even if it failed in other areas. Evans has tried to strengthen his sequel by focusing on what people complained about in the first film, but his script and direction is not up to par and vast reels of the film are wasted on seen-it-all-before, dreary, uninventive crime drama.

Ace Attorney - Japan Courtroom Drama/comedy

Story: Taking you through the many cases of the first game to the end of the DL-6 incident

It really is the best videogame movie adaptation ever. They really made it authentic, to hell with reality the costumes and behaviours are intact and the story is much better than most, well all other videogame-movies. It's really cool to watch as a Phoenix Wright fan and the end had me grinning. I think you should all check it out. Please make more Capcom. You can get it from Austrailia with subtitles or try youtube.

Unbeatable - Hong Kong - Action Drama

The Story: Fai, once a world champion in boxing, escapes to Macau from viscious loan sharks and unexpectedly encounters Qi, a young man determined to win at MMA fighting. Fai becomes Qi's mentor and rediscovers his passion to fight, not only in the ring but for his life and the people he cares about.

Warm, very funny and entertaining, with great fight scenes too, Unbeatable is the best Sports movie since Rocky 4 and ticks all the boxes. It's often laugh out loud funny too.

Ace Attorney - Japan Courtroom Drama/comedy

This is by far the most faithful video game adaptation ever made.  The sets, the costumes and especially the hair, all perfect recreations from the video game. The story is also mostly taken right from the game as well.  Being Phoenix Wright it is of course entertaining but anyone who has played the game will have a sense of already seeing this exact plot play out. Sure its fun to see it come to life but it is such a straight adaptation you wonder if just playing the game would be more entertaining.

The movie is funny cause of how ridiculous seeing this game be recreated perfectly is. I don't think it is particulary well written or whitty, it just has the same spirit as the games. Being a movie they had to cut down a lot of the plot, sadly Gumshoe and Maya get short changed big time, they are just there to be a plot device, you hardly get to know them as characters. You only see Wright go against Edgeworth once so the rivalry is not as deep as the game. I did not care for the actor playing Von Karma, he looks nothing like Von Karma. Von Karma is supposed to look like the most evil english man of all time, this is just some fat japanese dude in a wig.  Every one else is spot on at least.

The movie absolutely captures what makes the court room moments in the game so compelling. The mystery plays out well, of course most probably played the game so its not really a mystery to us, still the court room scenes are so compelling that the movie stays entertaining from start to finish. The music really failed though, it is far more subdued than the in the games, if they pursuit theme had played in the final moments it would have been epic, missed oppertunity.

The movie itself isn't particularly great at any one thing except being as faithful to the game as possible which means it is extremely entertaining. A friend of mine who has not played the games loved it, so I guess not knowing the twists in the story would make it more interesting. Any fan of these games should check the movie out, it is a fun movie to watch.
