"Rondo is the pinnacle of the classic Castlevania series, a synthesis of everything good about the games that had preceded it with everything bad stripped away. It is a lean, sleek, polished diamond of a videogame -- and as gorgeous, valuable, and hard as that gemstone analogy would suggest. The game's first level is set in the blazing ruins of the town of Aljiba, looking exactly as the village did in Castlevania II: Simon's Quest... except with 16-bit flair, and flames pouring from every window. In those first moments of the game, you know you're in for something special. It's a loving tribute to its predecessors, and at the same time it offers something new. You can follow the obvious route through the level and fight some crazy huge golems before facing off against a wyvern at the gates to Castlevania... or, you can poke around the edges of the screen and find a side path that takes you along a completely different path to face a far more difficult boss."
