I'm having more and more fun with this game and have really started to get that "old Mario" feeling.  The Ghost House in World 3 has sort of made it all come together.  I'd get lost then accidentally find where I was supposed to go, and keep stumbling into the right places until I got to the goal.

Best part of it, I got rewarded with the entrace to a cannon/warp zone to world 6.  That just made me giddy.  Completely unexpected.  And that was what really sold me.  That's exactly what the SMB3 and World were like. You never quite were aware that you were finding something hidden when you did.  Always kind of hit you at the last minute.

I have been looking for that entrance and cannot find it and you find it by accident?

Found it by sheer dumb luck and it's really the only cannon I've managed to find.  First of all I did have all 3 star coins, so that could be part of it.  But the part I think it was came towards the second half of the level.  There's a portion where there is a long vertical rope that Mario has to scale from left to right.  While trying to dodge some Boo's I jumped and wasn't able to grab the rope, but I fell into one of those fake wooden walls/boxes and there was a door in it.  After that door there was a very very long drop and at the end of it was the exit that lead to the cannon.

I found it but I dropped from a horizontal rope.

I am starting world 5, great game, still not SMB3 or SMW.  I don't know what to say, it doesn't have that same magic that those games had. I have played one airship level, that is a great level to directly compare to SMB3 as it is trying to be a SMB3 airship level. Well it was good but again the design wasn't as good as SMB3. This game is a great homage to SMB3 and SMW but it never reaches those games levels.

Maybe you should stop comparing it so much with SMB3 and SMW. I think you will have much more fun that way. Comparing it to all the other is for the historians and can always be done afterwards.

You have to, it's not like this game exists in a vacuum, and even if it did it is still not as awesome as SMB3 or SMW.  The entire game is designed to be new version of those games hence it being called New SMB. It's a great game, puts most 2D platformers to shame but I am not having as much fun playing it as much as I do when I play SMB3 or SMW. Me not comparing it to those two won't magically make more fun appear, nor am I having less fun because I think of those two. It is at a fun level under those games.

But the problem is that you are comparing a game with a memory of a game you have played. You honestly did not expect this game to be revolutionary (in single player) like the older Mario games? The point of these games is to be a throwback to older times and not reinvent the platformer genre, that is why we have Galaxy.

And you realize that SMW and SMB3 are some of the very best 2D platformers ever. Do you compare other platformers like LBP to those games too? Do you think while playing Ratchet and Clank that it is not as good as Galaxy?

Those games are different enough where I don't have to. I do compare every Ratchet game to its predecessors. I compare every game from one series to the others in that series (as long as they play the same). This game is identical gameplay wise to SMB3 and SMW, so I have to compare them. Of course I never expected this game to be on the level of those two, this is what I expected. I am just describing what I feel as I play.

You know what, yes I compare Ratchet to Galaxy, Galaxy is a measuring stick, if a game is not as good it is not a 10. I use all my super high scoring games as references. That has zero impact on how much enjoyment I am getting out of the current game.

But are you sure you are comparing them fairly? How old were you when you played SMB3? This reminds me of people claiming that Mario 64 is harder that Galaxy, or course it was, because you were eight back then and it was your first experience with a 3D platformer.

Same thing goes for these games. They were revolutionary in their time and you were less jaded back then. So you memories playing it will never compare to this game. But perhaps you played them recently?

Oh and stop mentioning SMW you Sonic loving tard! You did not even have a SNES. I bet you like Sonic 2 better, don't you? Nyaa

I played NSMB Wii for about five hours last night with my sister. Miyamoto is an effing genius! I haven't laughed so much or so hard in years! My sister isn't a fan of platformers, and she's never played more than a few levels in any Super Mario game, but last night we played co-op through the first three worlds, and had an absolute blast doing so. Since she's unskilled at playing these games, I had to teach her how to play, and often helped her out of jams. By the end of the second world, she was in the zone, and was doing fairly well for herself; she even came to my rescue a few times! I've never had so much fun in a multiplayer game before. It's too bad it's taken this long for Nintendo to finally bring a true multiplayer Super Mario game to the masses.

5 hrs is an epic play session, that's like watching Return of the King extended cut + the extra features.

And minus the boredom. Nyaa

I was a kid when SMB3 came out but I play it every few years, it is one of the greatest games ever made. SMW I played for the first time like 8 years ago, so I was much older and it blew me away.

I perfer Sonic 2, but I know SMW is the better game.

So you guys are serious and not wanking then? I was most assuredly holding of on this game.  If I pay full price and this is less than GOTY I'm going to be pissed off.

It is no GOTY. Not for me at least. But you should get it, its still awesome 2D Mario. Just cause its not Galaxy level good doesn't mean its a no buy.

Like I said in GGD, fun = GOTY, so NSMB Wii is definitely a GOTY to me.

But who cares! It's a 2D console Super Mario game! Just get it! Grinning
