I think my biggest problem is handling a kart, so this particular bike seems to help.

And yeah don't play as the babies. When I played with GG earlier this afternoon I was messing around with Baby Mario, and god I was doomed.

My fucking cat kept trying to jump on my lap during several of the matches. I have now learned to NOT have the cat in the room while playing. 
Lol, Raven do you have video of a race between me and you where you won by a split second? That was amazing! I came flying in and just couldn't catch you. I think it was on Mario Circuit.
Oh, and don't try to switch to tilt control schemes during a match. It fucks you all up.
I like tilt for the Wii remote but hate it for the Gamepad.
