I can understand why some fans would dislike it, though I think the overall negative response went way overboard. Personally, I loved it and I think most can at least agree that it's the best (if not the only good) 3D Castlevania. Can't wait for the sequel.
Listen to Iced Earth and play Doom
The game utterly sucked. I hate it so much that I can't even masturbate to Jean Luc Picard anymore.

Any non 2D Castevania is assumed guilty until proven innocent (sadly, but that's just the way it is, people usually hate change).
I think this one had unfortuante release timing (not sure) in addition to a bad demo, which pretty much sunk it.

It plays like GOW.... if IT SUCKED!!!!!
To be slightly more constructive it was like GOW with a heavier emphasis on puzzles. Bad puzzles mind you, but puzzles all the same. The music was anti-Castlevania and the plot showed such a complete and utter disregard to all the other Castlevania stories that it boggles my mind why they insisted on calling it Castlevania. It would be like creating a game where an Italian plumber goes around raping turtles and sets a princess on fire from a kingdom called Las Vegas because he plucked a pinecone from the "intense pine tree of fire" and then said yes this is Super Mario Bros: LORD OF SHADOWS or some such crap.
Been jumping on and off several different games these past few weeks, without actually getting hooked to anything. Things were made worse by my PS3 disc drive kicking the bucket, so in despair I turned to my shelf in hopes of finding something that would keep me entertained and there it was.
Its combat is pretty much a rip off of God of War's combat, so it's as simple as it gets as far as action games go, with counters and weapon upgrades included. Its visuals and music are quite good, and the way the game progresses gives leeway for repeated playthroughs of already completed areas in hopes of finding new stuff with powers unlocked throughout the game, much like the metroidvanias. I'm thoroughly enjoying it.
