It doesn't look as great as I thought it would reading the reactions elsewhere. It still looks good, but hardly top tier PS3 visuals really. Especially the environment textures up close. It does look Wii-ish, Tales of Graces-ish. Kind of a shame they didn't go 2D. Also, anyone else think DS will be the definitive version still (edit: nevermind, so they're separated games then, so one would be the sequel since it has the same characters and places? which one then? probably the PS3 game since in the DS footage he discovers the stuff for the first time, I think that will make for a more charming story as well, as long as there are no cliff hangers and Potter-ism)? At least, they didn't hint at Move support and the drawing-based spell casting like we see in the DS trailers. Yet. But they said it has a spell book too.

Really? You can tell all that from low-res trailers and screenshots?

I suggest we see this on our HDTV in full glory before we say it looks like Tales of Graces-ish.

Have you played Tales of Vesperia and than tried seeing Graces or Symphonia 2? Believe me, there's a BIG difference. Screenshots and trailers give it no justice on how significant the difference is.

And what are you referring to when you meant it's a shame they didn't go 2D? It is 2D just with 3D polygons. And there's no way they're going to make this full hand drawn animated 2D. You can't do full 3D games with 2D unless you want a sidescroller game like A Boy and His Blob or a on-rails QTE game like Dragon's Lair. It's the closest thing we'll see a 2D anime come to life in full 3D gameplay. That's impossible with hand drawn 2D graphics.

Definitely not a up-scaled Wii game:
I don't see much the Wii can't more or less do there. Tales of Graces' environments and cities are on par with those (and with a seamless, full scale overworld, not old school style, which surely limited them further), and the combat animations in Dragon Quest Monster Battle Road Victory are similarly anime-ish (but this particular video has bad contrast and color, and doesn't show the more impressive attacks).

Really? You can tell all that from low-res trailers and screenshots?

I dunno, you're showing us how awesome the mighty technologically advanced PS3 makes it via gifs? Until I see better I stand by what I said. It doesn't look top tier. The characters lack detail, but that's part of the style so is ok, if convenient, and the texturing in the environments doesn't appear to be high resolution or anything and seems quite smudgy, even in these low res videos, so I can only imagine it's more evident in proper high res.

I'm not sure what Vesperia has to do with this, I didn't say the PS360 cannot, ever, do far better than the Wii visually (and Vesperia also has a different art style that some may like more regardless, as it's cell shaded, while Graces is not, and Symphonia 2 also has a big difference from Graces in quality as it used GameCube assets), I merely agreed this game doesn't look like top tier PS3, and does have a Wii HD vibe. Feel free to disagree.

As for the 2D thing, it's not, it's 3D, hence the polygons you described. And no, you can do just about any game with 2D, like Ninokuni on the DS, which looks gorgeous (though I think it has polygonal characters, but I mostly wanted some lush 2D backgrounds, the characters look good enough with this simplistic style). I merely thought it would have been nice to have a home console 2D game for once, that isn't in one of the genres you said. RPGs and more involved genres didn't first show up alongside the advent of 3D or something. I like 2D and would like to see more home console 2D games and for them to stick around on 3DS as well even though it's powerful enough for decent 3D now. But I'm ok with you having a different opinion about this as well.

Tales of Graces looks nice for sure, and I do want this to come over here.

But Tales of Vesperia blows it away in every aspect of the game, and it's a two year old game. The extra graphical power and HD makes a HUGE difference.

And seeing that trailer of Graces, the backgrounds seem less cleaner and less detailed compared to the Another World's trailer or Vesperia. They also look more washed out and ridged while Vesperia's backgrounds look almost painted like a anime movie. I'm playing Vesperia right now and the detail/graphics are amazing because of the HD and 360's graphical power.

There's a difference. Another World won't be as good on the Wii because of the system's limitations and lack of disc space.

Yeah, don't get ahead of yourself. Choosing light colors doesn't mean it's "washed out", it's all 24bit color after all (if it was 16 bit there would be a ton of dithering). As for the file size, well, let's wait for the game to be out before claiming they totally needed Blu-Ray and couldn't have stuffed it on a couple of DVDs instead, especially considering that due to the Wii's lack of HD, elements like the anime movies would be much smaller in size. I'm sure they'd just as easily put it on the 360 if they thought it would sell, and then you wouldn't use this point. And no, the Wii can't do HD, so when people say it looks "Wii-ish" they tend to mean aside from the resolution, that's a no brainer. And anyway, I didn't say it should be on Wii or anything, that wasn't me, I merely commented on the visuals.

So if I had to watch one of them to prove to me that I would like these movies which one would you pick?

You're an evil man for making me pick, you know that?  While I'd say if you can walk away from My Neighbours the Yamadas without a smile, or Grave of the Fireflies without a tear, you're official dead inside, for just one, the honour has to go to Spirited Away.  Given you've claimed yourself to be a lifelong Disney fan, you have no idea what you'll experience with this one.

Spirited Away kicks ass. I want it on BluRay. Haven't found it, though. All the Ghibli stuff I own amounts to a measly Howl's Moving Castle DVD. I didn't even like it that much.

Grave made me cry. So sad.

Well it looks cool. Level 5 hasn't done a console game that's blown me away since DQVIII though. Granted they can ride the coat tails of that game forever as far as I'm concerned as it's as good as it gets.  On the low chance that it does come to the US and the even lower chance that I get a PS3 I'd still wait for reviews on this one.

I'd say my favorite is My Neighbor Torturo along with Castle in the Sky, which are both ties to me. Also love Princess Mononoke.

I have yet to see Miyazaki's newest film Ponyo. Cry

I never cared for the movie his son did.

I also like Whisper of the Heart, which wasn't directed by Miyazaki (as you all probably know), but it's still basically his film because he wrote and drew out the entire film in storyboards, frame by frame.

I love all of Miyazaki's films and most of Studio Ghibli's, but those are my favorites.

I think it's coming to the PS3 because this game will be pretty huge in Japan. And they probably wanted this game to be a spectacular once in a lifetime event for this generation, so I can understand the PS3 treatment.

I just don't think you can do this type of thing with the Wii. The PS3 is perfect because of the technology and blu-ray. Disc space, power, high-tech, and HD.

As to why it's for the DS and PS3? I have no idea. I think this was made for the DS first and then decided later on to make it a full-blown console game afterwards.

I just hope it's coming here, both versions. I'd finally buy a PS3 JUST FOR THIS GAME!!!

No ASK, I have played Another Code Wii. It's difficult to find decent screens and videos of that game. Trust me when I say that if you play it on a good TV, the visuals are actually better than what's in that Ninokuni video. The characters are great looking in this PS3 game but the backgrounds are actually slightly worse than what is in Another Code Wii.

If you were a true fan you would have seen it by now. I saw it months before it even released on dvd in japan. Then bought a $60 japanese import, then bought the PAL release that came out a couple of weeks ago.

I WIN.

I WIN.

Do you have all the artbooks, storyboard books, comic books, and other books from Oga Kazuo that range from $80-150 each, $120 for the artbooks, and $85-100 for the storyboard books?

I do. I have all of them. I spent thousands of dollars of my hard earned freelance artist cash for these gems.

So I WIN! WinkWink

I wish I could get more but these books' prices are insane!

And say what you will about the Wii, but there's no way it can handle Ninokuni. I love the Wii, and so it's not a knock on the system, but there's a reason why Studio Ghibli and Level 5 chose the PS3 as the platform so they can fully use its technical power to fulfill their vision. They probably wanted to make a Studio Ghibli game that's the closest to a playable anime film as possible. Common sense says that there's no way this is possible on the Wii.

Hey, I don't have the PS3 either but I'm not upset about this. I'm just amazed that this game is happening and I hope I can get a PS3 and equally hope this game comes over here.

You're not making any sense, common or otherwise, because this game as it exists on PS3, right now, has background graphics that aren't upscaled Wii, they aren't even as good as the cel-shaded backgrounds in a Wii game. Level 5 aren't using any technical power here. That is the major flaw in your whole argument. You can start talking about Blu Ray disc sizes and all, but that holds no merit when you can have 360 games come on multiple discs.

Yeah I'm bummed that the game isn't coming to a platform I own, but that doesn't stop me looking objectively at their game engine.

This is upscaled Wii:

I just wish I could find some decent representative screens of what Another Code Wii backgrounds look like, because in style they are closest to what Ninokuni is doing.

Best I can do is this:

http://www.wiitalia.it/screenshots/cache/another-code-r-viaggio-al-confine-della-memoria-1/another-code-r-viaggio-al-confine-della-memoria-1-wii_016.jpg_718.jpg

This is a bad screen that comes nowhere near to showing the colour vibrancy and sharpness of the real thing.

Now look at the BACKGROUND of this Ninokuni shot:

It's actually simpler and it even seems to have lower res textures than Another Code wii. I don't think Wii could do the Ninokuni character models as good as that^ but they could do all the background visuals seen in the screens and trailer without breaking a sweat.

For instance look at the background in this picture:

PSP could do that. 3DS could definetely do that.

These are the best Another Code screens I can find and they still look awful compared to the real thing.

Yet you can still see the backgrounds are more detailed than Ninokuni.

And it gets more painful as Level 5 already has a competent Wii cel-shaded engine up and running in Inazuma.

Yeah, the PSP can definitely do those Wii games! Nyaa

(Except for SMG)

And we have to see Ninokuni on a HDTV with a HDMI cable up close before we say anything. Like my example with Tales of Vesperia, screenshots do it no justice.

When you actually see the game on a HDTV, like I am now since I'm playing it, it's a tremendous difference between that and playing the other Wii cel-shaded games. Only A Boy and His Blob matches it but that's because it's hand drawn. As for 3D games, Vesperia blows them away.

And nobody wants this game on mulitple discs. And since this is mainly for Japan, there's no way Level-5 will bring this to MS, also, especially after than huge conflict they had with MS with that one MMO game True Fantasy Live, I doubt we'll ever see a Level - 5 game on a MS console ever.

Proper res images will only make the smudgy low res textures as in that outdoor area more evident, not less so.

I guess you're past even trying to pretend you have an argument then. I'm off, enjoy your delusions (after projecting your opinion/wishes as what the developer wants to achieve, or as what "nobody" wants the game as, or whatever else) but Ninokuni won't magically look like a top tier PS3 game just because you want it, it will keep looking like WiiHD at best. If it was gonna imrpove that much they wouldn't have shown these.
