Looking back at the way they release certain games....its like wtf??? I was just thinking about this and figured I'd share my insanity.

Ok, PS2 era. Metal Gear. They release MGS2 exclusive to the hugely popular PS2...ok, fine. A year later, they port the game to the Xbox with some extra crap. Again, fine. But then, as MGS2 is entering $20 range on PS2....they RE-RELEASE the Xbox port....on the PS2. A year later. 2 years after the PS2 original. For like $40. Why?  Wouldn't it have made more sense to port the Xbox version to....I don't know, the fucking GAMECUBE? Seeing as how they were in the middle of collaborating with Nintendo to bring MGS1 to the system anyway? How many copies could they have sold re-releasing the game on PS2? Then the Cube would have had the first 2 games in the series. Retarded.

Ok, 2004. They release MGS3....exclusive to PS2, after putting MGS2 on Xbox and MGS1 on Gamecube. What's the point in putting out one game in a series on a console that you have no intention of supporting with the rest of the series? Gaining fans just to piss them off? A year & a half later, they re-release MGS3, again on the PS2. With no Xbox or Gamecube port. Again, retarded.

Skip to this gen. They throw MGS4 as an exclusive to the very unpopular PS3. Refuse to put the game on 360. But wait....now the NEW MGS is coming to both consoles. This is great for Xbox owners who got jipped out of MGS4....

How about Silent Hill? Same thing. PS2 gets SH2....then Xbox gets an enhanced version a bit later.....then PS2 gets the Xbox version of the same game. Then SH3 comes out only on PS2....but then SH4 comes out on both consoles. Konami says Gamecube is too kiddy for SH....but then they release SH: Shattered Memories on the Wii.

These guys rival SEGA in stupidity....how have they NOT been bought out yet?

DLC was barely around last gen, so enhanced re-releases were common amongst many companies.

As for the rest... Nintendo doesn't deserve MGS. Konami aren't the ones who developed Twin Snakes, btw, and Team Silent didn't make Shattered Memories.

Yeah. It is a bit bizarre. And don't forget MGS Peace Walker for the...er...PSP! Uneasy

I can kind of understand why Kojima wanted to do the PSP game. Seeing how the game is more focused on multiplayer and very similar to Monster Hunter but with MGS gameplay, it's obvious they're riding on the Monster Hunter fad in Japan.

But that's Japan and the PSP is almost dead in the west. And the weirder thing is, MGS usually is more successful in the west, right? I guess that's what MGS Rising is for.

Another company that baffles me is Namco-Bandai. These guys are so screwed up right now I have no idea why they even try anymore.

I'm well aware they didn't develop Twin Snakes. That's why I said they collaborated. And I'm also aware Team Silent didn't develop Shattered Memories, which happens to be the best SH game in years. All that has little to do with what I said though. Either way, they're all Konami franchises and games, and they are the ones who made the release decisions.

But why do you feel Nintendo doesn't/didn't deserve MGS?

True. Outside of Capcom (whom I don't think is as great of a developer as they used to be) and Nintendo, I guess you could say most Japanese companies make some odd choices more often than not.  And that's pretty much why they're not as dominant as they used to be in the industry.

Capcom have been hitting some right notes even though they've done some crap lately. Their plan to reach out to the west with western developers making games for them hasn't worked out to well. The irony is how Lost Planet 2 also turned out pretty bad even after they vowed they'll never let another western developer work on one of their franchises again!

But as long as they have their fighting games and Resident Evil, I think they'll be good and I'll be happy! Happy

As for Square-Enix...they used to be the most dominant third party developer! I think they're fading fast and losing relevance every year. I still love their handheld JRPGs but I think they're dropping the ball with console games.

I blame Nomura! Nyaa

And honestly, I don't even consider Nintendo a Japanese developer at all! They're on another realm by themselves. They're neither west or east, they're Nintendo!

If you listen to gaming podcasts, try this one: http://radio.gomorning.com/

In the latest issue they go into how CAPCOM treats it's developers, it is quite elucidating.

If it weren't for Elebits I'd pretty much hate Konami.

In the SNES days they had so many cool games. And then they just became the MGS and ISS guys.

They rely on these too games far too much. And even though Igashari is still pootling along with good 2D castlevania games, the games haven't really evolved like other series have. They haven't modernised, but I guess that's what this new UK made Castlvania game is about.

But don't you agree that its foolish to slap ONE game from a series on a console, but not the NEXT game?

Yeah I hate when that happens, it's stupid. Say you own one platform you get a single game taste of a series before it hops off somewhere else. The next Silent Hill game is on 360/PS3 for instance.

Splinter Cell Conviction is a 360 exclusive. I think it's pointlessly annoying.

Speaking of Splinter Cell, what Ubisoft used to do with multi-platform games really pissed me off. Each system version would have slightly different features & different level designs, so no matter which one you got, you were left wondering what you were missing on other consoles.

Just make the same game on each system please.

People migrate from system to system. Like PS1 to PS2, then Capcom for instance gyp the PS audience on RE, then they do 3 GC games and then no mainline RE sequel on a nintendo system.

It's hard for a fan of a franchise to keep up with all this swapping bullshit. Soul Caliber 3 as a PS2 exclusive for instance. Wut? I wanted to get that and the cube version sold the most anyway, so what is the logic in that?

Soul Caliber 3 was one of the oddest moves I've seen. There had to be money involved. Why make a PS2 exclusive when it sold better on Gamecube, and I'm sure Xbox sold well too? Most say SC 3 was a pretty unnessessary sequel anyway. I've never even played it.

If I was a developer I'd feel pretty bad about depriving an audience of a franchise they are used to.

As a consumer, I invested all this money in a game series and then the publisher is saying, nope you can't buy it because we're going here next. F- U.

That's just ... precious!

on topic:  any 3rd party game exclusivity deal to a particular console is stupid as far as i'm concerned if there are no significant hardware differences (or the game was financed/commissioned)

You didn't miss out on much. It wasn't that great of a game, and was incredibly buggy to boot. If I can recall, you could corrupt your save game by deleting anything off your memory card - that should give you an idea as to what you're dealing with.

Soul Calibur IV was better, but that's not saying much. Both suffered by not being up to the same level of Namco home console fighters by removing a lot of the extra modes and feeling really stale.

It's better than 2 -- they stripped out all that Todd McFarlane garbage.  It controls tighter as well -- feels more like the DC version than 2 (though I only have the XB and GC versions of 2, so cannot make a direct comparison to the PS2 #2).

MGS2 wasn't released on the GCN because the discs only had 1/6 of the space of a DVD, and wasn't split into parts in the same way MGS1 was.

MGS3 didn't make it on the Xbox because it was on the verge of being discontinued.
