Okay about the few big annoyances!
The drawing is inconsistent. When I draw a circle to make something grow or draw the sun, I can never make it work consistently! The problem is not the drawing itself, I can make the circle just fine, but sometimes the game just not recognise it. The game also never tells you what your doing wrong.
I got stuck on a constalation, for the same reason. I draw the two stars and it just would not work. And then it finally worked and I still do not know why I worked then and not before. The worst offender is the dance of mr. Orange. I have to draw all these circles to make Sakuya's tree bloom, but I could not get it to work consistently. Again sometimes I thought my circle was perfect, but it did not work. Other times the circle was imperfect and it worked. The worst part is that you have to see the same cutscene over and over again everytime you fail. And you could not quit if you had enough and wanted to save. No you were stuck until you succeeded or turned off your Wii. The shape recognition is off.
Crossing out a demon on the list also took a while. The biggest problem of this shoddy pattern recognition is when I do an action I am never sure if you can't do it, or if I failed. So I often have to try dozen of times. Either the shape recognition is off, or the game is not communicating with me clearly enough what the requirements are.
Another thing is that "dungeon"! I am not even sure if that was a dungeon. But I will withhold judgement until I played more dungeons!
I noticed some interesting parallels with Twilight Princess and some other Zelda's, but I will write about that later!
Edit: forgot one! Loading why the hell is there any loading! And to hear that the PS2 version was even longer. Can you imagine playing a Zelda like game with loading? Annoying!

Then I did all kind of side quest, fed a few animals and helped the inane Susano cut some rocks. The overworld is now open, but parts of it are poisoned. Reminds me of Twilight Princess a bit!
Okay, I explored a bit and found Hana Valley. Is this supposed to be a dungeon? Wow, no puzzles at all, besides a simple ball rolling, sun drawing puzzle at the end. After that puzzle I got the bloom power. I can now regenerate the rotten tree's. I regenerated the other Sakuya tree also. The life generation cutscenes are awesome to watch. I explored the overworld a bit and got my bomb drawing power-up. Then I went back to Kamiki village to regenerate all tree's and finally help mr. Orange regenerate Sakuya. Finally I got the lily drawing power-up and that's when I stopped playing. I am really starting to like this game, but they are few big annoyances!
It's a great game, but yeah, it's not perfect. The biggest disappointment for me is the inconsistent difficulty. The bosses should increase in difficulty as you go, but they don't. The game does get kind of repetitive, too, but not to the point of annoyance for me.
The story is awesome. The art style is awesome. The sense of humor is awesome. The music is awesome. It's a long game. Just a few tweaks and there would be no question in anyone's mind that it is better than every Zelda (assuming they like the story, art, humor, and music, of course).
It's one of my favorite games.
If the bosses don't increase in difficulty, isn't that consistent?

As he said, it's not Zelda---it's better.

Ah, but if Zelda is perfect, and Okami is not Zelda, therefore Okami is not perfect

You're way too sensitive about Zelda. It's one of my favorite series, too, ya know.

When drawing circles around plants and such, make your circles encompass the entire part of whatever you're trying to make bloom--i.e. make the circle's diameter larger than the object. Also, when drawing anything on the environment (e.g. a circle for the sun or a crescent for the moon), make sure there are no obstructions--make sure you're not drawing on top of some unrelated object, as well. Analog sticks might be slower than a pointer, but it's easier to make circles and lines with them.
The dungeons are inferior to Zelda's in almost every way, but I think the puzzles within actually make more sense.
I got used to the loading. Ever played Half-Life 2 on the PC? I think the frequent loading is because of the design of the game engine, but each time it loads, I get impatient. Still one of my favorite games, though.

Not necessarily. What I mean is that they fluctuate--they don't strictly increase or even stay the same. They go from kinda hard to really easy to kinda hard again.
Unrelated, but there's one boss that you have to fight THREE frickin' times in the game! And as long as I'm on that, Ninja Gaiden comes to mind: that multi-eyed, tentacled creature appeared about three times, as well, in the course of the game (not sure about in Black and Sigma).

WTH? I think you might be overstating that No question in anyone's mind? Stop goading us. In my mind a few tweaks would make Okami a smoother better game, but still leagues behind Zelda.
Okami is a good game, but Zelda has a design quality that is an order of magnitude greater than Okami. Okami has its art, Zelda has everything else plus good art.
It's doubtful that Clover could ever make an Okami as well paced and intricately designed as Zelda.
Iga, there is nothing wrong with the recognition. Try laying off the stimulants
No I mean seriously, remember to complete your circles, this is the biggest problem people have. The circles are the easiest thing to draw in the game so something is wrong with either the way you are doing it or your sensor bar, make sure there is no light reflecting off the bar etc.
With other things you need to do you can hold down the Z button to get perfectly straight lines.
With the circles, as Beaver said make sure you draw them big and try to encapsulate the whole item within them. The stars have hidden ones that are duller and you have to do them in the right order and you have to work out where to place them properly, dont worry about that.

There is definely things wrong with the recognition. Heck today I had the same problem again. I can draw a circle easily, but sometimes the game does not recognize it for some reason. The same goes for the line. I draw it straight, it's wrong. Draw it again and suddenly it works. I am not using the Z button, my hand is steady enough. I had lots of practise drawing lines with my HapticMaster Airbrush combo.
Compare that to the shape recognition with games like Brain Training. It's huge!
Igaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
Draw your circles big, make sure you are close enough to the object, dont try and circle something too far away as it wont work. Make sure you close your circle and dont release the button until you do.
For straight lines do them fast, otherwise use the Z button. How long are your lines BTW?
Okay I played some more Okami. I decided to feed some animals and explore the field a bit. I feed bunnies, horses and piglets. Kind of satisfying to do these stuff.
Then I went to Agatha Forrest. After some time I found the tree and healed that region. I also fought that flute guy. Did some fishing, man fishing sucks in Okami and found the key to what I assume will be the next dungeon.

Yeah I figured distance mattered. Sometimes I draw a circle 5 times, it does not work. I step a bit closer that it works. If the distance matter, what's the point in painting? The painting mechanism is a whole lot less flexible than I wanted. Does the size, shape and technique of the drawing matter at all? It seems like a dumbed down version of the items in Zelda!
What lines? The one that I draw with the HapticMaster? They are around 20 cm long, and my variance in movement in x, y and z direction is not much.
No I meant the lines you draw in the game.
I see what you mean about the drawing. All those things do matter though. It takes some practice, but it does work well. You will need to use the Z button at some point to do perfect slices.

Most of the time I just check the news section. This time I saw mention of a comment about Okami, a wonderful game that deserved more sales than it got, and I had to say something.
Ok ok, overstatement. Ya got me. I was completely serious at the time I wrote it, though... maybe I imbued "a few tweaks" with a little more meaning than it should have. "Multiple tweaks and additions" would probably better cover what would need to be done. The reality, though, is that Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, as Zelda games, both disappointed me, while Okami was wonderfully fun and fresh, despite its flaws. This might be because I'm so very much attracted to its anime-like... everything.
Twilight Princess was the attempted 3D culmination of all things Zelda (not counting those iffy DS ones and the new direction in Wind Waker). However, it was a major let-down in several areas, including the fact that I felt like I was simply playing a reimagining (think of the new Silent Hill) of A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time. There are so many things about it that are tired ideas now. If it were my first traditional Zelda experience, I would have appraised it better--unfortunately for it and Nintendo, it wasn't. And I won't hesitate to say this again every time the game is brought up: the enemies are too god-damned fucking easy. There are barely any side quests and the Poe one is ridiculously hard/tedious, especially without a way to turn day to night and vice versa. The wolf combat is overly simplistic and repetitive, and the Twilight could have been implemented better and more.
Wind Waker... ugh. I love the new things that were done... absolutely love it. But the implementation needed tweaking. Sailing took so long and it was so frequent that it almost put me to sleep. Enemies, again, were way too easy except when in groups (like in several Triforce-related grottos). Dungeons were pathetically easy, and maybe even too short, compared to previous ones. Bosses were too easy. What makes four dungeons in Majora's Mask fine and four in Wind Waker horrible? The fact that Wind Waker's didn't really pose any challenges... and the fact that there weren't enough side quests, just like with Twilight Princess. What was there tended to just be tedious.
I'm not asking for difficulty like that of The Adventure of Link (which, along with the original LoZ, I have never finished because of their difficulty), but just something acceptable. Make me use Link's new sword moves more often and not just for watching a Bokoblin's head recoil after I knock it with my shield.
And both of them are of the "save everything from G-dorf" template (although, admittedly, we don't learn this for a while in Twilight Princess). Why couldn't we have seen something different again, like with Majora's Mask or Link's Awakening? Even the Oracles were good on this point, because even if they did ultimately have Ganon as the final boss, you were trying to prevent him from returning, which isn't typical for Zelda games. They could bring Vaati or another enemy to the console games again, too.
Despite the small sorrow I have from not being able to play the next Wii Zelda, I just can't expect Ocarina- and Majora-like quality from Nintendo anymore, and that's the quality I need (obviously incorporating new technology and some ideas from the last two console games).
WW had 5 dungeons, not 4. Get your Zelda facts right Beaver.
I understand where you are coming from.
Iga... geesh guys, like 10 posts on drawing a circle, sounds like this game works way better with a normal controller.
Dvader said:Iga... geesh guys, like 10 posts on drawing a circle, sounds like this game works way better with a normal controller.
What?! Did you not read? I said I can draw a circle and line just fine, but sometimes it work and sometimes it does not. And it's difficult to tell why. I can draw a whole lot faster than you can draw with an analog.
Wow, Beaver is back and opening a can of worms
