Gamespot preview

Disney Epic Mickey is a colorful adventure that seems packed with hidden Disney secrets and long-lost treasures. Animated cutscenes and even tutorial sketches are fun to watch, because they're done in such a charming way. There's so much personality in the characters that we met, so we're looking forward to being able to explore the rest of the wasteland. Look for the game when it ships on November 30

Very unimpressed with the collector's version of the game. I've never bought one of those, and likely never will, but if I ever did this would have been the game I'd have done it for.  I need something cooler than a 5" figure, a DVD and a face plate.

Besides I just got a NES skin cover from Nintendo Power for one of my Wiimotes, and that's pretty damned cool.

The characters look really good now, very Disney art-esque, but the environments still look bleh to me. I think it was said part of the idea is that some theme parks have been recreated by Oswald but he never saw the real deal in person and isn't exactly good at it so they're not quite right and well done, but it just looks like the artists did a sloppy job to me... Besides, wasn't it the wizard seen in the intro who created it all before stupid mouse went and ruined it? Magic should do better. Here's the type of art the characters remind me of:

Sort of. But moving!

The environments remind me of Rayman 3.

The character models are looking great, especially in the latest Disneyland video.

I just saw this game for 40 Euros in a store. Yes this game is already out in the Netherlands. Did not buy it, too busy playing Muramasa and after that Jungle Beat.

I'm not sure what the sales predictions of this game are, but I'm going to say 2 million easy. I was at Disney World 2 weeks ago and they had posters for the game EVERYWHERE.  To the point where it was attracting the attention of non-gamer friends who asked me for an explanation. They will also be having playable copies of it in Epcot this weekend from what I was told. So just based one what I saw in the theme park Disney seems very dedicated to getting it lots of attention.

I've not seen any large scale marketing yet though. Wasn't it supposed to have all sorts of tie in products to raise awareness, from comics to whatever, and be an official reboot of the character for all of Disney? You can't do all that after the game is out already. Well, you can, but it won't help as much. It seems to be just another Disney game now, and not even tied to a movie. And Mickey's design isn't the same people know if Disney actually won't adopt it. The white face is a big difference I guess. Coupled with most impressions saying that at best it's a diamond in the rough and at worst disappointing, I can see it underperforming easily. You can't half ass your way to the top on a system with a wealth of highly polished platformers, 2D & 3D, and often with characters just as iconic as Mickey. Hopefully once it's out in more areas we'll see a hype machine and mostly positive impressions form... But either way it's gonna be hard to guess sales. I hope it's good and does well.

I never heard any of that. But I can say Disney doesn't do reboots. Micky in particular can appear in multiple different ways at any given time depending on the audience that's viewing him. He's portrayed one way on a cartoon they run that's directed towards pre-schoolers. In the themeparks he's portrayed a different way. Epic Mickey is just going to be another version of him.

All that aside I've seen a lot of print for promoting him so far, some web and I've seen a few commercials. I suspect they're holding off on the big push until after this week. The game comes out in NA next week and this week there's so much Black Friday and and mega sale stuff going on that doing any advertising for a product that's not immediately available is just throwing money away.

Well, there's articles like this all over the internet from when it was first announced. I guess it could be just PR bs to hype the game and they didn't ever intend that to be Disney wide but that'd be awful.

Were the commercials any good? I don't like their trailers much so I hope they're better than that. I think they were also a bit too successful in making a bleak wasteland version of Disney. Nothing really looks attractive & cheery like say, Mario games, so it may not have the same appeal. In Warren Spector's vision there are reasons why it all looks like it does (Oswald creating caricatures of the real theme parks that he's never seen, and on top of that the thinner disaster messes everything up) but to people it may just look like a sloppy, uninviting mess.

Yeah there was a ridiculous amount of speculation about the game, particularly when the first pieces of concept art first started coming out. Most of that permeated into the media. When you look closely at that articles like this, there's not a whole lot of sources that they're quoting from.  But a lot of it came from the things that Spector himself said. Originally Mickey's personality was going to change depending on how you fought and what you did. Tthen focus groups said, "don't make him bad" so that stuff got left out. So that negated a lot of the "evil Mickey" stuff that was thrown around at first. More than anything though, this was such a departure for Disney, even if it did get watered down, that it was hard for media outlets not to get caught up in it.
