I have to say, I'm going into with the following expectation:
I'm not expecting it to be great, I'm expecting it to be special.

Don't know if you mean that in a good way, a bad way, or you don't know what to think yet...
That's OK. It's EXACTLY how I felt at first too!
I'm curious to see if you go through the same: "Hmmm... Wut...? Oh... Wow!" steps I went through.
Just a tip though: Once you get the three weapons remember that strength and weakeness description from before.
To put it simply:
________________
The Shield Fists beat the Lasers. The Lasers beat the Arch Sword. The Arch Sword beats the Shield Fists.
(The Shield can block the Lasers. The Lasers keep the Arch Sword from getting in close. The quick and agile Arch Sword dances circles around the Shield Fists.)

...and remember your timing!

So far it turns out I was right. It's a unique game. I'm up to chapter 3.
I've thrice this week fired it up to play it and ended up not playing it. So that is probably the best summary I can provide so far. The long lead in at the beginning doesn't help, it takes 3-4 minutes just to get back to resuming the game.
After I do some work this morning I am going to make a serious hack at the game, maybe it has been a disjointed experience because I have played it in short spurts, or maybe it is the disparate level designs.

Change weapons. The game is based around a "rock-paper-scissors" style of combat.
I found no way to change weapons other than to take them from enemies.
I've quit the game now. Done with it.
This is what the first five hours was like:
- 4 minutes of intro every time.
- 20-30 seconds of 3-d platforming.
- Go to a closed arena with three enemies that take 15-30 hits before they die.
- Repeat step 2.
- Repeat step 3.
- Repeat step 2.
- Boss battle that goes on for 10+ minutes.
- 2-D platforming for 7 minutes.
- Return to Step 2.
It's a terrible, terrible game.
Bought my copy yesterday and just got through the prologue. I'm...intrigued so far.
