It all started with The Veil.

Or actually, The Fade. The Fade is the realm of spirits, separated of reality by The Veil, a place where mortals can only enter through their subconscience. Centuries ago, the empire of Tevinter had no equal in might, power, wealth, and knowledge. And it was knowledge, of all things, what would eventually lead to its demise.

For Tevinterian magisters had learned blood magic.

It is said that the very first magister was taught blood magic by Dumat itself, the first and more powerful of the Old Gods. Throughout the years, after countless murders and rivers of blood, magisters amassed enough power and knowledge to tap into The Veil and enter The Fade, where The Golden City, home of the Maker, lies.

Of course, the Maker wasn't all too happy about having unwashed humans snooping around his holy underwear drawers, so he threw a celestial fit, expelled the intruders with a swift kick in the ass, and sealed The Old Gods away as a punishment for stealing his spotlight in the eyes of the dumb humans. There are said to be seven Old Gods, ancient dragons of power and might beyond imagination, enough to make humans worship them instead of the Maker.

The Maker, of course, is a little reluctant about sharing his followers, so he said "Fuck it!" and left humanity, but not before cursing them with some horrible...curse that turned them into the first of the Darkspawn. Twisted shadows of their former beings, filled with hatred and a lust for blood not so easily quenched. Actually, not quenchable at all.

And thus, the First Blight was born...

There have been a number of Blights throughout the centuries, and in each one of them, the pattern repeats itself: A swarm of darkspawn overruns entire nations, searching for an Old God to awaken, until the Grey Wardens stop their run and bring peace once again. Rinse and repeat.

This is where you come into action. Dragon Age: Origins is a Bioware developed RPG that offers a nice mix of action, satisfying combat, great VA and cast of characters, and an engrossing plot with lots of intricacies and enough side quests to keep you busy for a long time.

In Dragon Age, you are bound to become one of the Grey Wardens, the ancient order of warriors that are called upon when all hope is lost. The "Origins" part lies in your background of choice at the start of a game, which will eventually influence the way events unfold and how NPCs treat you.

As with any WRPG this side of Bethesda worth its weight in LOTR plagiarism, there is a lot of Tolkien stuff in here, so as long as you understand this from the get-go, you shouldn't be in need of rolling up your eyes because of the lack of belts and zippers. What's a tad different here is the way such races are presented. Racial undertones are common when talking about elves, which, unlike the fair, luminous beings of the Middle Ages, are now treated as second-class citizens everywhere, and kept as slaves or worse most of the time.

Combat is as deep or shallow as you want it to be. You can just let the AI (which is remarkably customizable in its own right) manage the rest of your party, by means of assigning behaviors, and specific actions triggered by a huge number or variables, or you can micromanage the entirety of your party, which is an imposing task considering the real time nature of fights.

The number of skills, spells and abilities is overwhelming, in the hundreds, so you have to be careful where to allocate your skills and ability points.

Sassed by these guys.

I think I'm going to be sticking with Bethesda WRPGs.

My experience of KOTOR and Mass Effect annoyed me in that they have a good game there, but then force you to do some annoying bullshit with regards to stats or some assey puzzle you cant do unless you have the stats.

Been playing for 20 hours, did one really cool mission where I made the choice to sacrifice a woman. Alistair then confronted me in my camp, started yelling at me, that was very different for a game.

I am still getting used to the combat, I have died a few times but each time I come back with a better strategy and win the battle. It is very very Bioware, there is a ton of KOTOR in here, its that same structure to the game.

I would say the biggest strength are the characters, excellent characters. I just met this gay elf, and no its not a stereotypical gay elf, its a badass suave talking gay elf who hits on my character, I kind of flirt back. LOL But hey I am making out with Morrigan so it's ok.

I just did a quest where an evil kitten took a girl prisoner. LOL Sadly I did not save the girl.

I love this line, by the elf Zevran:

"I don't like foreign objects invading my personal space. Well not all the time." LOL

Been playing only this game for a while now. Closing to the 20 hr mark, and still undecided on what to do with the posessed kid at Arl Eamon's house. I left for a while to clear my head and do some side quests.

I am dying far more than I would expect, even in random skirmishes with wolves or hurlocks, and that's getting a bit annoying. It's probably my fault because of my party selection, but I still am baffled at the ease with which I die on a regular basis. Last night I went to find out what happened to a caravan, and a crapload of wolves assaulted me, made me fall and killed me without letting me get up again. This happened twice, lol. My whole party is at Lv 10 or 9. I am probably picking up the wrong skills when leveling up or assigning points badly, because I shouldn't be having this much trouble on normal difficulty.

I am playing with a female human noble warrior, my skills are being allocated towards two-weapon fighting.

It's good don't get me wrong but I know I don't prefer this kind of game. I am trying to get past that and just enjoy it for what it is which is a very well done WRPG. The characters and some of the storylines are flatout fantastic. Combat has its moments.

It's definetely not as good KOTOR, but it is a quality RPG.

And to think, you could have bought NMH2 or Endless Ocean 2.

I own it. I tried to recreate my D&D character and play how he would have played, but Dwarves, in their dumbass universe, are secular and can't use magic, which makes it very hard for my chaotic-good cleric of Kord. He's basically diminished into one of those fictional material atheists who don't believe in morals in the absense of god.

The game is alright. I'm nearly finished it.

Liking this game a lot more now, probably cause I am in the middle of some actual combat. For a while there I felt like I wasn't doing anything other than talking to people to find new quests. Spoilers ahead.

...

I went to that town of haven or whatever it was called to find the urn. I love the setup, you know its a crazy town, you start to find dead bodies and stuff. Then the whole town turns on you. I went through the mountains, great battles all the way through. Then I reached the top and I have my first dragon, which I assume I am not supposed to battle just yet cause it beats my ass. I think I need mages for this but I have one mage. sad.gif

I stopped at the entrance to the gauntlet, this is giving me such an Indiana Jones feeling. You have the immortal guardian telling you that you will need to pass certain tests in order to find the relic of legend, just like the holy grail. smile.gif

Oh and out of nowhere Sten fought me over leadership. He just challenged me so I was like "ok big guy you want to fight me, I'll beat your ass" and so I did.

That's the thing I really love about the game. I love how characters will call you out on your decisions, and will react because of it. Oh, and the dialogue is fucking awesome.

And it's finally good to see a multi-plat game where the PC is clearly the best version.

I am in ecstasy with this game. I'm not even fucking kidding.

From the dalish realms of the Brecilian Forest, trying to find a cure for a curse that turned elves into werewolves, to the madness of Red Cliff's possessed heir, and then down to the depths of Orzammar to discover some secrets that should have been left forgotten. After almost 40 hours I'm probably more than halfway into the game, and having an amazing time with it. So amazing, that Mass Effect 2 is still shrinkwrapped.

Sidequests are fun, varied and intriguing, and they number in the hundreds. There's always something new and unexpected at each turn of the road. Tactics are fairly customizable, and allow you to be flexible enough to skip the need to micromanage every character in your party.
