I was thinking about what I've always considered "Reward Games" where a successful developer is allowed by their publisher to make a game that is completely different from what they usually do (for reasons I figure are to give everyone to stretch their game design muscles before they get back to work).  Here are the one I could think of:

Deadly Creatures - Rainbow Studios know for ATV games got to make a bug game.

The Club - Bizarre Creations, known for Gotham racing, got to make a crazy third person shooter.

Black - Criterion, known for Burnout they got a chance to make an FPS.

Gun - Neversoft got to get off the Tony Hawk skateboard for an open-world game.

Samba de Amiga - Gearbox, known for their shooters got to shake their maracas.

Sonic RPG, DS - Bioware, known for dialog trees got to make a 2D isometric action RPG (for the DS!).

Does it ever work? Can you think of more examples? Why do you think this happens?

On topic, I think it is a good thing for devs to get away from the same franchise over and over. The results wont always be good but at least its interesting.

*Stops, contemplates for a moment*

Sometimes the results can be disastrous...!

Two games that come to mind:

The Bouncer (stick to RPG's Square, Please! ...and maybe just make Einhander 2 when you need to do something different!)

...and the other was a god-awful racer. Can't remember it's name right now though...

Edit: Driving Emotion: Type-S! That was it!

*dashes off, pants in tow!*

I think these games happen because the dev team is burnt out on making the same thing over and over again, and they need to do something different once in a while.

That's my theory too. A little bit of employee morale / appreciation.  A way to keep talented people happy.  It's got to be a grind to work on a single game (like Criterion and Neversoft do), and not get to try something different.

With game budgets getting up where they are I don't think we'll see too many more of them.

The Bouncer wasn't too bad. I saw shadows of it in Yakuza.

Steel Battalion was a very different game from Capcom

I bought this one last gen, and it was crazy good. I kinda wish I had kept it, but I don't have enough room!

I came in here expecting to find pics of Jade Raymond drunk and naked. Perhaps some of Gabe Newell as well.

Does Crystal Bearers count? Or any Crystal Chronicles game?

They know that the main series is being carried on in a traditional manner so they just do whatever the hell they want?

What about Portal, isn't that a successful example?

Gun is actually pretty good.  A bit glitchy, and definitely no wow-factor, but solid.  Quality from the examples, they don't seem to come out too badly, not really any big hits though.  Asking did it work has another side, and that's financial success, which I don't think seems to pan out, but I don't know the numbers to say for sure.

Tell me to get back to rewriting this site so it's not horrible on mobile

 Gun was certainly a success.
