So, I DLed a few demos this last weekend. Let's go through them, ladies, shall we?

InFAMOUS (PSN)

Unsurprisingly, this game is an absolute blast to play. The city is remarkably well done, with fantastic lighting and with significant attention to detail, although population seems scarce, maybe because they already know there are superpowered beings breaking stuff on the streets. Controls feel a little loose, but they are nevertheless manageable, and the powers are fun and easy to use. Climbing mechanics are intuitive and forgiving, and sliding from building to building using power lines never gets old. There is not too much enemy variety, and their AI is near brain dead, although it's always fun to watch them squirm and run if you nail them with a sticky. Missions available in the demo included protecting a water tower and protecting a supply crate, both were really fun to play, and, of course, it's always fun to mess around with the playground that the city offers (rather limited in the demo). No matter how fun is the combat, though, I believe that an open world game lives or dies by its mission structure/variety, so if the game manages to keep things fresh in that regard, we could be seeing a truly outstanding title.

Red Faction: Guerilla (Multiplat)

Yup, the Ostrich Hammer game. RF:Guerilla is a third person shooter that boasts entirely destructible environments. And there is a lot of things to break in the demo. Story seems to be as unremarkable as in any space shooter, controls are what you would expect of such a title in this genre, and the entire premise of the game reeks of "been there, done that". However, the game manages to deliver a solid amount of action in the way too short demo. You need to retrieve a...piece of machinery from an enemy facility, so you break in, guns blazing. There is supposed to be a cover system in there, but I never got my character to take cover, if you take too much damage, retreating a bit will make your health bar to go up again, gunplay is competent, but the weapon provided in the demo seems to lack punch. It'll be a matter of time to find out how good is weapon variety in the full game. After getting the machine back, you enter a short chase sequence where you have to fend off your followers and that's about it. Environments are largely destructible, although it is a matter of what are you using to destroy them. A gun does not have the same effect on a building than a humvee rammed towards it.

Xblades (Multiplat)

Ugh. See that thong over there? That's about the only thing that'll stick in your mind after this game. It's as generic as it gets, which is something that Red Faction has too. The difference is that this game is not as fun to play. Nicely done cutscenes give the game a Prince of Persia (new one) vibe, but that's where the fun ends. The moment you get to control your lady character boredom sinks in, with button mashing combat (of the one button kind) that has no fun or visual flair or challenge. Eventually you get some powers (acquired through souls from enemies defeated), that you can map to the face buttons of the controller, but even those are unremarkable and lame. Hit detection is wonky, and your character is an ode to gamer stereotypes, with jiggly boobs that bounce a bit when you stop running, and the omnipresent g string, besides an obnoxious attitude. At the end of the demo you get to fight a...cat creature or something, but the fight is kind of easy (if I am saying that, the game is probably too easy) and not too demanding on strategy either. Maybe worth a rent. Maybe.

Peggle. (Multiplat)

Pure crack. I loved it, my wife loved it, my daughters loved it. Enough said.

Bad AI? Hopefully the challenge is in killing them in awesome ways, then.

Wasn't red faction a FPS series? The game looks so generic now.

I guess it is. The challenge they pose its in their numbers. The mission where you have to protect a supply crate makes you face a number of trucks with machine guns mounted in their backs. Those can wipe you in a couple seconds, they keep coming at you in waves.

"Generic space sci-fi shooter" would be as apt a name as Red Faction:Guerilla. The hook here is the destructable environments. There are a number of nifty touches as well. If you happen to kill one of your civilians (I did that...by accident) the game doesn't go apeshit on you. Instead, your overall morale goes down and supplies you get from ammo crates are worse in quantity and quality.

You can ride a good number of vehicles in the game as well. That helps in raising mayhem throughout enemy lines.

How can anyone not like Peggle? Nyaa

Yeah I played a few demos recently as well. I tried X-blades and yeah the g-string is awesome. LOL It would probably make for a fun rental. Trying to control the camera was a pain in the ass. Red Faction was pretty cool but with so many other games I'm more interested in it will pretty much just be a rental for me. Tiger Woods 10 was very solid but the music sounded like something straight out of a '70's porno flick.
