Yet another comics topic.

I got a couple of those fat comic books that offer complete story arcs in one convenient package. Dunno how are those called. Are those trade paperbacks? Whatever. Anyhow, I bought two of them, one is a Marvel Omnibus book that has the following series:

  • The Coming of Galactus
  • Death of Gwen Stacy
  • Days of Future Past
  • Infinity Gauntlet
  • Demon in a Bottle

Some of those are considered classics of comic book history, and they're all fairly new to me. I have read scattered episodes of a couple of them here and there but I never had them all in one package. The other one is DC Comics' Final Crisis, which I have never heard of until I found it at the store. I'm excited to find out what it is about, though.

Yes those are Trade Paperbacks or TPB's as we geeks refer to them. You've got some good stuff there. Particularly the Infinity Gauntlet. I just reread that one a few weeks ago.

Final Crisis may be tough to read. I didn't read it, as DC's cross-overs tend to be too messy and hard to follow if you aren't very familiar with the DC Universe beforehand. Plus it was written by Grant Morrison who is very much a love him or hate him writer.  No middle ground. If you like it though you'll probably like a lot of the Batman books he's written which are all very weird, but beloved by fans of his.

If you like Infinity Gauntlet there is Infinity War and Infinity Crusade to read as well afterwards. Also Silver Surfer had many crossover issues as Thanos is his nemesis.

Infinity Wars was okay, but Infinity Crusade was utter crap. That was just an excuse to get some extra readership into all of Marvel's B rated books that no one gave a crap about.

Neither was as good as Gauntlet.

I am such a chump, when I was in my late teens I sold nearly all of my comics, a collection of near 150 titles for some cash so I could buy a leather jacket. In retrospect the jacket sucked ass and I left it in the old house when I moved.

Has anyone ever read any of the original Deathlok? I used to like it but they only made like 35 issues way back. I hear they did a new series after that.

BTW is there some site I could use to get an estimated value on some of my comics that I kept? I have stuff that is 20 years old and more. I saw some dude selling the gold cover of X-men Omega for like over $300, I have the silver cover one. I also have a bunch of Marvel Metal cards and TMNT turtles cards from like 25 years ago, as well as a bunch of Aliens comics.

Old comics don't really have a value unless you get them graded. Most of the time you can go to a comic convention and there's someone who is licensed and will do it. Otherwise you can go here and send some for grading: http://www.cgccomics.com/

Grading? What is this?

And I have to physically send them in? By the time I pay postage it wont be worth it. Is there just some list I could look at or database I could search?

There also magazines like Wizard and Comic Book Buyer's guide (that may be defunct now) that also offer price values for books. I'm not aware of any place that offers full listings off the top of my head though. But until the book is officially graded it doesn't technically have value.  No one would buy a book unless its graded.

What about trading cards?

And say your comics are graded what is the best place to sell them? Ebay?

I believe there is a similar system in place for trading cards. Not sure who does it though.

As far as selling comics I have no idea.  I gave up on the idea of selling my collection years ago. The collectibles market for things like baseball cards and comics disappeared during the 90's and never really recovered, so it just didn't seem real important.  eBay is a safe bet, though I'm not sure if it's the best place anymore. So many niche auction sites have popped up, that eBay isn't quite the powerhouse that it once was.

I have so many Marvel cards from the early 90s. I have the entire X-Men collection, I think it was the masterpiece collection or something, it was all very artistic. My dad bought a few of the Death of Superman comics to hold on to in the future, sadly those are worth nothing now.

Robio. You were right.

I just finished reading Final Crisis and I wish there was a way to unread it. What in the flying fuck did I just read? This is shit. Utter shit. Fuck this guy who wrote it.

The Marvel Omnibus, on the other hand, is quite enjoyable, and I haven't even reached Infinity Gauntlet. I love how Tony Stark is both a pimp and a drunk.

I didn't want to tell you it sucked since there are people who like Grant Morrison, and maybe you could have been one of those people.... but you're so not so yeah it did. Totally sucked. Grant Morrison ruins everything he fucking touches, and has somehow convinced critics around the world that he's a genius.

And yes Tony Stark was an utter pimp. Still kind of is really. One of these days I want to draw up the "Marvel Comics Fuck Tree" because I'm pretty sure that between Wolverine and Tony Stark they have nailed 90% of the women in the Marvel Universe.

I only really read spiderman back in the day and got out around the time the fucking clone thing was going on. I read spawn up to issue like 15. I really like the maximum carnage story and enjoyed the venom origin and the fights they had stuff. I really like the Fantastic Four but have never gotten into their comics.

I started reading some graphic novels around the time The Watchmen came out (starting with The Watchmen) but mostly Batman and DC ones. Final Crisis was the most insane thing I have ever ....... just thinking about it makes my head hurt. Most of the Batman books I have read have been really good though, I have read three or four now... the latest they just made into a cartoon film and its so good dark knight returns maybe? It's where batman is old.... anyways its so good.

Id love to jump into Fantastic Four, Hulk or other things but comics are very intimidating now. I have no fucking clue where to jump in, whats going and what I have always hated is that there is multiple "lines" for the same godamn character. I always hated that there was the regular spiderman (amazing) and then spectacular spiderman, spiderman 2099 or whatever it was and all this other bullshit.

Yeah there is so much content it is hard to know where to start. I tried to use wikipedia and check out the major events, if you type in marvel or dc events there is a big dated list. You can usually pick these up in graphic novel form and has the big important stories.

WW Hulk is pretty amazing stuff, although I don't really care about the myriad of small-time nobodies getting in the way of the actual cool shit. I also found out a smaller edition of Civil War is being released over here, picked up the first volume today.
