Okay I mentioned this game in the latest podcast. And none of you mainstream tards knew about this game. So I decide to make an information thread of all the info we have so far. I am going to do more of these threads, but I will start with Alpha Protocol (PC, PS3 and 360).

What is it about?

From IGN: Obsidian has made a reputation for building on established franchises, such as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Neverwinter Nights. Now the company is looking to launch its own IP called Alpha Protocol, and it's sort of an RPG about a spy who is a combination of James Bond and Jason Bourne.

This is a game with an emphasis on keeping the pace high, even during moments when you make decisions. A lot of RPGs in real-time will pause when you have to make a decision, so you can think about what you want to do. Alpha Protocol has a timer that only gives you a handful of seconds to choose. So you have to think on your feet whether you want to, say, talk nice to the American Marine guarding the embassy you're trying to get into, talk sarcastically, or pull your gun on him.

This embassy mission served as the E3 demo, as the goal is to talk to an important NPC inside. As soon as you're inside the embassy it comes under attack by forces of a rival agency, and depending on how you dealt with the guard can affect how the battle unfolds. If you were nice and the guard let you in, then you'll fight alongside the Marines against the invaders. But if you pulled your gun on him and were hostile, then you'll be in a three-way battle, with the Marines, you, and the invaders battling one another.

The action unfolds in third-person, behind-the-back style, and uses a combination of reflexes and role-playing statistics. You're more accurate the more points that you invest in a given firearm skill, and as you invest points you unlock special abilities. It's sort of like how skill points work in Mass Effect. For instance, dumping points into the pistol skill will give you the ability to blind fire around corners and critically hit opponents.

Then there are some special attacks that you can also queue up as well. One lets you basically go on a rampage with effectively unlimited ammunition, while another gives you a version of bullet time that lets you target three enemies in slow motion. It then kicks back to real-time, unleashing a fusillade of fire.

This is a game that will give you a wide range of action. You can be a saint, or you can be a total hard ass, to the point of shooting an unarmed prisoner in the head and then telling your superiors that he pulled a gun on you. Such actions will have long-term consequences that you might not foresee, and it also promises a wide amount of replayability.

The Combat system

1UP: Can you talk a bit about the combat system -- what does it feel like moment to moment?

CP: You play in a third-person over-the-shoulder perspective, running around behind [protagonist agent Mike Thorton]. Your most direct form of combat is with guns, and there are four different gun types, each with their own unique upgrades and so forth. Each of the gun types has a different "personality" that complements different play styles; the pistol is an elegant weapon that can be very quiet, the shotgun would be a room-clearing weapon, while the sub-machinegun is also a room-clearer, and the assault rifle is more of a soldier's weapon. The gunplay works a lot like other shooters.

Or you can use close-quarters combat; you can stealth up to someone and do a silent kill like in a Splinter Cell, or just pummel people in hand-to-hand combat. Or use traps and grenades -- there's a lot of different options available to you. On top of those basic options, you gain special abilities, which are basically modern-day versions of spells. For example, with the submachinegun you can do a Bullet Storm, which basically does a ton of extra damage for a limited time. You don't even have to worry about reloading, so that'd be one way to quickly clear a room of guys by using an ability. You have a lot of options for the player, but at its base, you have a traditional third-person over-the-shoulder action game where you have a choice as to how you take on most of your enemies.

What guarantee do we have the game will actually be good?

None, but the developers worked on games like: like PlaneScape: Torment, Icewind Dale, and NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer. So they know a thing or two about RPGs. Oh and Vader: Sega is publishing.

From the description I would usually just like the action sans RPG stuff. I will watch the video later. I have heard of the game but never really investigated it before.

Because you sound manly, and chest hair is manly. I'd love to grow a moustache like that one. Only the moustache.

No. No video here at work. And even if video wasn't blocked, my shitty browser lacks the plugins needed to play it.

Describe it to me in your manly voice, while curling your chest hair. LOL

Just watched the dev walkthrough, it doesn't grab me. I looks like a bourne type 3rd person game, actually it reminds of Mission Impossible on N64 but now it has WRPG style dialogue choices. Doesn't really do it for me.
